For most Samsung refrigerators sold in the United States, Samsung recommends setting the refrigerator to 38°F and the freezer to -2°F. Samsung UK recommends +3°C and -18°C. These are manufacturer-recommended starting points, not universal settings for every model or market; check your refrigerator’s manual for its controls and guidance.
What temperature should I set my Samsung refrigerator to?
Samsung US recommends 38°F for the refrigerator and -2°F for the freezer on most models. Samsung UK’s guidance is +3°C for the refrigerator and -18°C for the freezer. The values are close but not identical, so follow the guidance for your market and exact model.
Setpoints are not the same as food-safety thresholds. Samsung US, citing USDA guidance, says refrigerated food should be kept below 40°F and frozen food below 0°F. A panel setting alone does not confirm that every part of a compartment is at that temperature.
Some Samsung models show temperatures as bars rather than numbers. Samsung US Support says three lit bars are the recommended setting for both compartments on those models. Check the user manual if your display or controls differ.

How to change the temperature setting
Samsung control panels vary by model. On the common controls described in Samsung UK’s support guide, use this general sequence:
- Tap a control to wake the display if it is off.
- Select the fridge or freezer compartment; its indicator should flash.
- Use the left or right controls to select a temperature or function. On some external-display models, pressing Fridge or Freezer cycles through available values; Twin Cooling panels may offer preset steps.
- Wait about five seconds for the selection to be confirmed on the covered controls.
Some panels use different steps, and holding a compartment button may activate Power Cool or Power Freeze rather than change the normal setpoint. Match the procedure to your model’s manual. Samsung UK Support advises checking the manual when the display does not match the examples in its guide.

Using Power Freeze
Power Freeze is a temporary function, not a replacement for the normal freezer setting. Samsung UK says it automatically switches off after 50 hours on the display types covered by its guide and uses additional power. Switch it off earlier if you no longer need it; behavior may differ on other models.
How to check the actual temperature
The number on the display represents an average, according to Samsung US Support; temperatures can vary by location. The back and bottom tend to be colder, and opening the door lets warm air in. A refrigerator-freezer thermometer can help you check the compartment rather than relying only on its setpoint.

- For the refrigerator, put a thermometer in a glass of water near the center of the compartment.
- For the freezer, place the thermometer between frozen packages. Samsung warns against putting it in water in the freezer because the glass could shatter.
- Keep the doors closed and allow up to eight hours before reading the thermometer.
If the refrigerator reads warmer than 40°F or the freezer warmer than 0°F, Samsung advises lowering the setting and waiting 28 hours before checking again. These are Samsung US support instructions; follow local food-safety guidance where it differs.

- Move food that is blocking interior vents.
- Make sure there is adequate clearance around the appliance.
- Keep the refrigerator out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
- Check that the doors close fully and the seals are in good condition.
If food continues to spoil prematurely after these checks, or the refrigerator displays an error code, consult Samsung support or arrange service. Error codes can indicate that service is needed; these checks do not identify a specific fault.
