Gabriel Zamora’s September 10, 2026, PCMag review argues that Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine has the violence and superhero spectacle but not the momentum, combat depth, or story to make them satisfying. His criticism is less about gore than about a mismatch: a fast, ferocious hero is placed in a game he describes as linear, slow-paced, and repetitive. That is one reviewer’s judgment, not evidence of a wider critical consensus.
What is Zamora’s main criticism?
Zamora compares Wolverine with Insomniac’s Spider-Man games and says it leaves behind the open-world movement and navigation he valued in those titles. Instead, he describes mission-based progression and a semi-open Tokyo section that feels limited. In his view, collectibles there add padding rather than meaningful exploration.
The distinction matters because the complaint is about how the game is structured, not simply how graphic its fights are. Zamora’s version of Wolverine is an aggressive, fast-moving character, but he says the game repeatedly slows that fantasy down.
Why does the pacing feel slow?
The review points to long walks, dialogue, exposition, cutscenes, and mandatory investigation tasks between fights. Zamora gives searching a facility for drawings as an example of a task that must be completed before progression can resume. He sees these interruptions as busywork that undercuts the action rather than building anticipation for it.

This is a subjective assessment of pacing, not a documented independent playtest. The underlying tension in his argument is clear: players drawn to a high-impact Wolverine brawler may instead encounter stretches of traversal and investigation that, for Zamora, feel at odds with the character fantasy.
Does the combat have enough depth?
Zamora says standard attacks and finishers become repetitive, while heavier attacks can leave Logan exposed during their animations. He also criticizes abilities that are gated behind leveling or limited by cooldowns. In his reading, dismemberment is primarily visual presentation rather than the foundation of a more involved combat system.

His comparisons focus on control and the way combat rewards skill. He cites Ninja Gaiden 4 as a demanding combat sandbox with a resource meter, Ninja Gaiden 2 for a dismemberment-to-finisher loop, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance for precise blade control. These are the standards Zamora invokes; the review does not establish an objective ranking of the games or independently verify their mechanics.
What does the review say about the story?
Zamora calls the plot predictable and argues that its parallel narrative threads do not make their stakes compelling. He compares Logan’s character arc to what he sees as an uninspired retread of the original PlayStation 2 God of War, and describes the alternate-reality Team X material as fan service. These are his interpretations of the writing, not settled facts about its quality.
