Exposed water ice at Mars’s north pole generally contains less than 3% dust by mass, according to a 2026 study—far below earlier estimates of up to about 25%. The difference reflects both a revised way of interpreting observations and the fact that Martian polar ice is layered: relatively clean ice alternates with dust-rich beds, so a dusty layer does not describe the whole deposit.

How much dust is in Mars’s north polar ice?

The study by Pari Mohan and Aditya R. Khuller, published September 8, 2026, in npj Space Exploration, estimates that exposed north-polar water ice generally contains less than 3% dust by mass. Earlier estimates had put dust content as high as about 25%. These figures refer to different interpretations and layers, not a single uniform mixture throughout the polar cap. Read the study in npj Space Exploration.

Within the layered deposit, the researchers distinguish relatively clean ice layers containing about 0.05–0.5% dust from dust-rich marker beds containing about 25–75%. The much higher proportions therefore apply to particular beds, not necessarily to the exposed ice or the deposit as a whole.

Why did the estimate fall from about 25% to less than 3%?

A different way to interpret the observations

Mohan and Khuller recalculated ice grain size and dust content using an optical method developed for snow and ice on Earth by Steve Warren. The University of Washington says the analysis combined observations from NASA’s Phoenix lander with orbital satellite data and corrected a discrepancy in an approach adapted from lunar-soil analysis. That methodological change matters because an estimate derived using a model for lunar soil may not describe light interacting with Martian snow and ice as well as an Earth-tested snow-and-ice model. The revised result is not simply a new reading of the same uniform layer: it also reflects what material the observations represent.

The surface changes with the seasons

Phoenix measurements at one site recorded 0.04% dust on Sol 28 and 0.45% after 58 sols, according to the University of Washington. The researchers interpret the pattern as seasonal dusty frost forming in winter and disappearing in summer, exposing cleaner, older ice. Those percentages are observations at that site and at those times, not a planet-wide average.

Is Mars’s north pole mostly clean ice?

The exposed ice examined in the new analysis is generally low in dust, but the north-polar deposit is not uniformly clean. It consists of alternating layers: cleaner slabs and dustier marker beds. A surface observation, a particular buried bed, and the full layered deposit can therefore yield very different dust percentages.

In practical terms, the less-than-3% estimate describes exposed north-polar ice in the study’s analysis; it does not mean every layer has less than 3% dust. The 25–75% range describes dust-rich marker beds, while the 0.05–0.5% range describes relatively clean ice layers.

What can the layers tell scientists about Mars?

Polar ice preserves a record of past Martian climate. The University of Washington says the layers contain details about climate thousands of years ago, when the ice likely formed from snowfall. Mars’s large variations in axial tilt are associated with dramatic ice-age cycles; distinguishing clean ice from dusty marker beds helps scientists interpret that layered history.

Dust content also affects how the ice behaves today. Dust darkens ice, causing it to absorb more sunlight, warm, and vaporize faster. A better estimate of dust in exposed ice therefore helps clarify its surface energy balance, while understanding the distribution of dust through buried layers helps with climate reconstruction.
