Choose Mario Kart 64 if your group wants to get into multiplayer racing quickly: its VS and balloon Battle modes are directly selectable. Choose Diddy Kong Racing if you want more vehicle and battle-mode variety and don’t mind unlocking some tracks first. Both support up to four players; the better fit depends on what your group wants from a session.

Multiplayer at a glance

What matters Mario Kart 64 Diddy Kong Racing
Players Two to four players in VS; Battle is also a multiplayer mode, according to Nintendo’s instruction manual. Two to four players in Versus Mode, according to Nintendo’s game page; the manual transcription also describes up to four players in Tracks mode.
Racing VS is a dedicated multiplayer race mode. Tracks mode provides multiplayer racing, but some courses must be unlocked through Adventure mode, according to a third-party manual transcription.
Battle Balloon-popping battles on four dedicated courses. The manual transcription describes four battle types, including two objective-focused variants.
Vehicles Karts, with character-specific handling and three engine sizes, as described on Nintendo’s game page. Cars, hovercrafts, and planes; available vehicle choices can vary by course.
Course figures 16 race courses and four battle courses, according to Nintendo’s manual. Nintendo lists 20 courses overall. That total is not directly comparable to Mario Kart 64’s separate race and battle course counts.

Which game is easier to start playing together?

Mario Kart 64: pick a mode and race

Nintendo’s manual describes VS as split-screen competition for two, three, or four players. It also provides Battle, where players try to pop one another’s attached balloons on special courses. That makes Mario Kart 64 the straightforward choice when the group wants a quick race or a clearly defined battle session.

The manual counts 16 race courses and four battle courses. Nintendo’s UK game page describes four cups with four tracks each, plus 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc engine sizes. Those are different ways the game organizes racing; the multiplayer mode specifically documented for head-to-head races is VS.

Diddy Kong Racing: more to explore, with a progression caveat

Nintendo describes Diddy Kong Racing as having a two-to-four-player Versus Mode and 20 courses overall. Its multiplayer racing is called Tracks mode in the manual transcription. That transcription says only the first level from each world is initially available there; other courses must be opened through Adventure mode. If your group wants every course ready from the outset, that requirement makes Diddy Kong Racing less convenient.

The unlock detail comes from a third-party transcription of the manual, rather than a Nintendo-hosted manual. Treat it as a manual-based qualification, not as a claim about present-day availability or a separate hands-on test.

How the vehicles and battle modes differ

Mario Kart 64 keeps the racing format focused

Mario Kart 64 centers on karts. Nintendo notes character-specific handling and three engine sizes; its game page also highlights items such as shells, bananas, and Lightning Bolts. Battle has a specific balloon-popping objective and four dedicated courses.

Diddy Kong Racing changes the vehicle, and the scenario

Diddy Kong Racing offers cars, hovercrafts, and planes. Nintendo’s description and the manual transcription indicate that players can use different vehicles when a course permits them. The manual transcription also lists four battle types: two conventional arenas and two objective-oriented modes. The available documentation supports a claim of greater vehicle and scenario variety, but not that every group will find those modes more enjoyable or balanced.

Which one should your group choose?

  • Choose Mario Kart 64 for direct access to multiplayer races and balloon Battle, especially if you want to start without progressing through a single-player mode first.
  • Choose Diddy Kong Racing if switching among cars, hovercrafts, and planes and trying different battle scenarios matter more than having every track immediately open.
  • For a group of up to four, either game supports multiplayer at that size. Decide based on access and variety, not player count alone.

This is a recommendation based on documented modes and features, not a head-to-head playtest. Neither set of sources establishes which game is more fun, more balanced, or easier for beginners.
