Game director Del Chafe III said on September 30, 2026, that extraction remains a “major part” of the game and will continue to receive updates. Bungie’s roadmap describes PvE, PvP, and PvEvP as connected experiences, but does not say how often extraction will be updated or whether it will remain the dominant mode.
What the director said about Marathon extraction
In a September 30, 2026, post from the Marathon Development Team, game director Del Chafe III said: “We want to be clear, Extraction is still a major part of Marathon, and we’re also going to continue updating it as we look to the future of the game.” GamingBolt reproduced the statement in an October 2 report: Marathon’s Extraction Will Remain a ‘Major Part’ Even After PvE Launches, Says Director.
That is a clear commitment to continuing the extraction experience and updating it. It is not a promise of a particular update schedule, a list of upcoming extraction features, or equal attention across every mode.
What Bungie plans to add, and when
Bungie’s September 24 roadmap, The Future of Marathon, lays out several planned updates. These are announced plans, not confirmation that the features have shipped; Bungie says its future update pace will depend on the work involved and what the team can support.

| Planned timing | Update or experience | What Bungie announced |
|---|---|---|
| Early October | Nightfall Refresh | A planned refresh identified on Bungie’s roadmap; the cited announcement does not specify its features here. |
| December | Symbiosis | Planned to add Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience, an expanded Perimeter, a new shell named Bishop, improved onboarding, and a social space with a firing range. Bungie also describes Team Deathmatch as experimental. |
| March | Larger evolution | Bungie says this planned evolution is intended to connect PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences, with deeper progression, more narrative, new enemies, and a new zone. |
Bungie says it was still finalizing parts of the December PvE experience and planned to provide a deeper look before launch. The roadmap does not establish the mode’s rules, player count, difficulty, or exactly how it will relate to extraction.
How PvE fits alongside extraction
Bungie’s roadmap says, “PvEvP will remain an important part of Marathon, but it will become one point in a connected set of survival experiences.” In other words, the announced direction is expansion rather than a simple handoff from extraction to PvE: Bungie describes PvE, PvP, and PvEvP as parts of a broader set of experiences.

The roadmap also distinguishes modes by how a run works. In PvE, the opposition is environmental rather than other Runners; PvEvP includes the possibility that other Runners threaten a run. Bungie characterizes Team Deathmatch as lower commitment and says it does not risk a full run. The PvE experience is described as permanent, while Team Deathmatch is experimental in the planned Symbiosis update. Those descriptions do not establish that the modes share the same progression or rules.

In a September 17, 2026, leadership update, Bungie said Marathon “did not reach as many players as we had hoped” and that the game “needs to evolve.” The studio described its intended experiences as including cooperative PvE, competitive PvP, and PvPvE. This is Bungie’s own qualitative explanation, not independent player-count or sales data. The update is The Next Chapter for Bungie.

Together with the later roadmap and Chafe’s statement, the direction is clear at a high level: Bungie intends to broaden what players can do without announcing that extraction is ending. The published statements leave the relative priority and update cadence of extraction unspecified.
