Manual testing uses a person to perform or evaluate checks; automated testing uses software to perform or support testing activities. Neither is universally better: use human judgment for exploration and unsettled behavior, and automate stable, repeatable checks when the cost of building and maintaining them is justified.

What do manual and automated testing mean?

Manual and automated describe how testing activities are performed or supported—not what the test is intended to prove. The ISTQB Glossary defines test automation as “The use of software to perform or support test activities, e.g., test management, test design, test execution and results checking.” ISTQB Glossary: Test Automation

That scope is broader than a script clicking through an interface. Software can support test management, design, execution, or checking results, while a person may still decide what should be tested and how to interpret findings.

Testing itself is broader than running the product. It includes planning, preparation, and evaluation of software and related work products. ASTQB’s explanation of the ISTQB Foundation Level syllabus describes testing as an intellectual activity requiring knowledge, analysis, and critical thinking—not just execution. Key differences at a glance

Consideration Manual testing Automated testing
Who or what performs the check? A person follows steps, explores behavior, or evaluates what they observe. Software performs or supports defined activities, such as execution and result checking.
Repeatability Can vary with the tester, context, and execution; a written procedure can improve consistency. Can repeat specified actions and checks consistently, provided the test and environment are reliable.
Exploration and interpretation Well suited to investigating unexpected behavior and judging whether an interaction makes sense. Best at checks with clear inputs and expected outcomes; it does not replace human interpretation.
Initial effort Can be practical when a feature is changing or a team needs an immediate check without a ready automation setup. Requires suitable tools, test design, and often framework and environment setup before repeated runs pay off.
Ongoing effort Repeated checks require people to perform them again. Scripts and supporting infrastructure need maintenance as software and interfaces change.
Scale and runtime Repeated manual runs consume tester time. Can execute repeatable checks regularly, but browser-level end-to-end tests can be expensive to run and need substantial infrastructure.

These are tradeoffs, not a ranking of rigor. A carefully designed manual check can be rigorous, and an automated test can be unreliable if its assumptions or expected results are wrong.

When should you choose manual testing?

When the feature or interface is still changing

If requirements or screens are moving, scripts may need frequent updates before they provide dependable value. Manual checks let a tester adapt to the current product and investigate behavior that was not anticipated when a test was written.

When you need a human judgment

People are better placed to interpret ambiguous behavior, notice confusing interactions, and explore paths that are difficult to specify in advance. This is especially useful when asking whether an experience makes sense to a user, rather than only whether a predefined condition passed.

When a deadline is immediate and automation is not ready

If a team has no usable framework and needs feedback now, manual execution may be the practical short-term choice. Selenium’s official guidance also identifies tight deadlines without existing automation and anticipated major UI changes as situations where automation may not be advantageous. When should you automate test cases?

When a check is stable and repeated

Automation is a strong candidate when the same check runs often, its inputs can be specified, and the expected outcome is clear. Repeated execution can provide regular feedback on behavior that should remain consistent as the product changes.

When repetition or scale warrants the setup

Compare the effort to design, implement, run, and maintain an automated check with the recurring effort of performing it manually. There is no universal break-even number: the answer depends on how often the test runs, how stable the product is, how much infrastructure it needs, and how costly a missed regression would be.

When software support helps beyond execution

Automation can support test management, test design, execution, and result checking. It does not mean every activity or decision in the testing lifecycle has been automated; people still need to select useful coverage, review failures, and judge what the results mean.

Is automation always advantageous?

No. Selenium’s documentation states, “It is not always advantageous to automate test cases.” Automation has setup and maintenance costs, and a test that breaks whenever a rapidly changing interface shifts can demand more effort than it saves. Selenium: Overview of Test Automation

Browser-level tests deserve particular care. Selenium notes that functional end-user tests are expensive to run and require substantial infrastructure. Before automating a browser journey, ask whether a lower-level test can answer the same question more simply. Use browser automation where the behavior being checked genuinely depends on the browser or an end-to-end interaction—not merely because the feature has a web interface.

Manual versus automated testing is not the same as test type

Functional, acceptance, and integration describe a test’s purpose or scope; manual and automated describe its method. The same kind of test may be performed manually or supported by automation, depending on what the check needs to establish.

  • Functional testing asks whether features work properly.
  • Acceptance testing considers whether a feature or system meets customer expectations.
  • Integration testing examines behavior across connected components.

Selenium describes browser automation as one possible method for web functional and acceptance scenarios, not as a separate test purpose. Selenium: Types of Testing Choose the test purpose first, then decide whether a person, software, or a combination is the appropriate way to perform and evaluate it.

How to choose a testing approach

  1. State the question the test must answer. Identify the behavior, risk, or user expectation you need evidence about.
  2. Decide whether judgment or exploration is central. If the outcome is ambiguous or the path is still unknown, start with a person exploring and interpreting it.
  3. Check stability and repeat frequency. A defined, stable check that runs repeatedly is a more promising automation candidate than a one-off check of a changing feature.
  4. Estimate the full cost. Include test design, setup, runtime, infrastructure, debugging, and maintenance—not only the time to write a script.
  5. Consider a lighter test level. For browser scenarios, ask whether a lower-level check can answer the same question before committing to an expensive end-user test.
  6. Combine methods where useful. A person can explore a new feature, while automation covers stable regression checks; review automated failures with human judgment.

Using browser automation to capture a web page

If your specific task is capturing a page in a browser, a DIY route is to use browser automation to navigate to the target and save a screenshot. For example, Selenium’s Python API can take a viewport screenshot after navigation:

from selenium import webdriver

options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
    driver.get("https://example.com")
    driver.save_screenshot("shot.png")
finally:
    driver.quit()

This minimal example requires Python, Selenium, and a compatible Chrome browser/driver setup. It captures the current viewport; it does not by itself handle consent banners, wait for application-specific content, capture a full page, or assess whether the page is valid. Selenium’s official documentation explains browser automation and test practices at Selenium documentation.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot API alternative, try ScreenshotNeo first: cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot, and bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed.

One GET request returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server so AI agents can take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

What test results can—and cannot—tell you

A passing check is evidence that the tested behavior met its stated expectations under the conditions of that run. It does not prove the software has no defects. Manual and automated testing both have coverage limits; the quality of the test design, the behavior examined, and the interpretation of results all matter.
