Each problem needs a different tool. Sparse checkout limits which tracked paths appear locally; partial clone defers selected Git objects; sparse-index can reduce index work for supported commands; and Git LFS stores large file contents outside Git’s ordinary object storage.
How do I speed up Git in a large repository?
First determine what is slow and where it happens. A long initial clone is a transfer problem; too many checked-out paths point to sparse checkout; slow status or index operations may benefit from sparse-index; and growing numbers of packfiles may call for a multi-pack-index. Large binary history is a separate storage and collaboration issue.
| Symptom | Technique to investigate | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Initial clone or fetch transfers too much file content | Partial clone, such as --filter=blob:none |
Defers selected objects until needed; a remote may be needed later. Git clone manual |
| The working tree contains more paths than the task requires | Sparse checkout | Limits which tracked paths appear in the working tree; it does not itself omit all history or objects. Git sparse-checkout manual |
| Index work remains costly in a repository with many paths | Sparse-index, where supported | Compresses portions of the index in cone mode; gains depend on command and Git-version compatibility. Git sparse-index manual |
| Object lookup is affected by many packfiles | Multi-pack-index and incremental maintenance | Indexes objects across packs and can support incremental repacking. Git multi-pack-index manual |
| Large binary files dominate repository growth | Git LFS or storage outside Git | LFS puts file content on an LFS server; reproducible generated outputs may belong in external storage instead. GitHub Git LFS documentation |
These approaches solve distinct problems and can be combined. None is a universal repository-size switch, and official Git documentation does not establish a single speedup that applies to every repository.
How can I clone only part of a repository?
Use sparse checkout to reduce the paths populated in the working tree, and partial clone to reduce which objects are transferred initially. They are related but not interchangeable: sparse checkout controls visible paths, while a partial-clone filter controls downloaded objects.

Use sparse checkout for a smaller working tree
The high-level git sparse-checkout command is preferred over manipulating skip-worktree state directly. For example, after cloning, a cone-mode setup can select a project directory:
git sparse-checkout init --conegit sparse-checkout set path/to/project
The selected directory and its required top-level paths are populated according to sparse-checkout rules. Git documents different sparse-checkout use cases and cautions that their effects on command behavior can differ. Sparse checkout alone does not mean every unselected file’s object or the repository’s history was excluded. See the sparse-checkout manual.
Use partial clone to defer object downloads

git clone --filter=blob:none <repository-url>
Git documents other filters, including --filter=blob:limit=<size>, which omits blobs at or above the specified size. The --sparse clone option starts with only top-level files in the working directory, but it is not itself an object filter. Consult the clone manual for syntax and filter behavior.

When a later operation needs an omitted object, Git can request it from the remote. That can reduce initial transfer and local storage, but means access to the remote may be necessary later. Consider that network dependency when planning offline work, CI jobs, or remote availability.
Consider sparse-index for index-heavy work
Sparse-index is designed for repositories with many paths. In cone mode it represents portions of the index as sparse-directory entries; for supported operations, this can shift work away from all paths at HEAD toward the populated set. The relevant scale depends on files at HEAD, populated paths, and modified paths.

Compatibility is command- and Git-version-dependent. Do not assume every command avoids expanding the index or benefits equally; check the sparse-index manual and validate the commands and tools used by your team.
How should a large repository handle packfiles and maintenance?
As objects accumulate in multiple packfiles, a multi-pack-index lets Git index object locations across those packs rather than requiring one enormous pack. Git documents logarithmic object lookup across any number of packs. Incremental MIDX chains can reduce how much index data must be rewritten when adding packs, though the implementation has limitations described in the manual.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGit maintenance can incrementally update commit-graph files and use an incremental-repack task to repack selected smaller packfiles and update the multi-pack-index. These are options to investigate when measured maintenance or object lookup is a problem; they do not make every operation faster by definition. See the Git maintenance manual.

A full garbage-collection repack can be expensive on a large repository because it repacks objects into a single packfile. Before scheduling one, assess disk space, repository activity, expected repack time, and whether a maintenance window is needed. Avoid treating aggressive full repacks as a routine cure for every large repository; incremental approaches may better fit cases where a single pack is impractical.

Consider Git LFS for large binary assets that need versioning and collaboration but do not belong as ordinary file contents in Git’s object database. Git keeps pointer files in the repository while the actual content resides on a separate LFS server. That changes how collaborators obtain the file: they need compatible Git LFS tooling and access to the LFS storage, and the team must account for storage, bandwidth, and host limits.
GitHub says collaborators without Git LFS will not have access to the original large file. Its documentation lists maximum LFS object sizes of 2 GB on Free and Pro, 4 GB on Team, and 5 GB on Enterprise Cloud; files above 5 GB are rejected. These are GitHub plan-specific limits, current in its documentation as accessed October 4, 2026, and may change. They are not Git-wide limits. Check GitHub’s LFS documentation for current details.

Not every large file belongs in LFS. Keep source files whose history matters in Git; use LFS for large versioned binary assets when its collaboration and hosting requirements fit; and put reproducible build outputs or other files that do not need source history outside Git. GitHub gives object storage as an example of external storage.
Which repository limits are GitHub-specific?
GitHub recommends an on-disk repository size of 10 GB for performance and manageability, enforces a 100 MB single-object limit, and publishes operational guidance that includes a 2 GB push-size limit. These are GitHub recommendations and host policies, not limits imposed by Git itself. The figures are from GitHub’s live repository-limits documentation accessed October 4, 2026; check the current limits page before relying on them.
Git itself supports repositories beyond those GitHub thresholds, but practical hosting, transfer, storage, and team workflow constraints still matter. Apply a host’s documented policies to that host only.
Can Scalar simplify a large-repository setup?
Scalar is a Git repository-management tool that configures advanced settings, background maintenance, and reduced network transfer. Its documentation says scalar clone enables sparse checkout by default and configures background maintenance unless requested otherwise. It can be worth evaluating when a team wants a packaged workflow rather than configuring each feature manually.
Scalar behavior, availability, and platform support depend on the installed version and environment. Verify those details and compatibility with the team’s tools before adopting it. See the Scalar manual.
