First determine whether a Gemini failure is a fixed quota limit, transient capacity pressure, or a non-retryable request problem. Then apply a bounded retry only when recovery is plausible; if the retry or latency budget runs out, degrade gracefully, queue the work, or route it to a separately validated alternative. Gemini API and Vertex AI errors have different documented guidance, so do not treat their quotas or retry settings as interchangeable.

Diagnose the error before changing your retry or fallback path

A 429 response alone does not identify the cause. Check the error details and the quota for the specific Google service surface your application uses. A retry can help with temporary capacity pressure; it cannot permanently fix a fixed project quota, an invalid request, or an account problem.

Gemini API: separate short-term limits from daily quota

Gemini API limits can include requests per minute, input tokens per minute, and requests per day. The applicable limits depend on the project, model, tier, and account status; they apply at project level rather than per API key. Google also notes that actual capacity can vary, so a published limit is not a guarantee of available capacity. Rotating keys does not increase a project’s quota.

The Gemini API error reference distinguishes rate_limit_exceeded and too_many_requests, associated with short-term rate or burst limits, from quota_exceeded, associated with daily quota. Temporary service overload or downtime is documented separately as HTTP 503 service_unavailable. Check the current project limits in the relevant console before assuming a particular cause.

Spend-based limits may also apply to eligible accounts. Google’s Rate Limits page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 thresholds of $10, $50, and $200 respectively per rolling 10-minute window where applicable. These are tier-dependent account limits, not universal spending allowances; confirm the live value for your project.

Vertex AI: RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED may mean quota or shared-server overload

On Vertex AI, Google Cloud documents HTTP 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED as potentially resulting from either quota overrun or shared-server overload. Read the accompanying error message and inspect the relevant quota. A transient overload may clear after a delay; retrying does not resolve a fixed quota excess. Keep Vertex AI diagnosis separate from Gemini API error names and limit dimensions.

How should you retry Gemini API requests?

Retry only failures that could plausibly be temporary, and make every retry policy bounded by both attempts and elapsed time. Google’s Gemini API troubleshooting guidance recommends exponential backoff for retryable errors such as 429 and 503. For direct REST calls or custom retry logic, add random jitter so many clients do not send their next attempt at once.

  • Consider retrying transient statuses such as 429, 408, and 5xx responses, subject to the service-specific guidance and the request deadline.
  • Do not blindly retry client or account errors such as 400, 402, and 403. Correct invalid input, authentication, permission, or billing issues instead.
  • Set a maximum attempt count and maximum elapsed time or request deadline. Preserve idempotency where relevant, and log status codes and error details to make recurring quota or capacity patterns visible.
  • Check all layers that might retry—SDK, application, queue, and gateway. Independent retry loops can multiply requests and create a retry storm even if each layer appears bounded on its own.

Google’s Gemini API troubleshooting page, accessed in 2026, says its Python SDK automatically retries transient errors up to four times, with an initial delay of approximately one second and a maximum delay of 60 seconds. Those are documented SDK defaults, not a universal policy for every language or version; verify the behavior of the SDK version you deploy before adding application-level retries.

Vertex AI’s error guidance is more restrictive: it recommends no more than two retries, with a minimum one-second initial delay and exponential spacing. Google Cloud’s “Reduce 429 errors on Vertex AI” guidance also says, “An immediate retry is not recommended,” and recommends exponential backoff with jitter for temporary 429 and 503 errors. Keep these Vertex AI recommendations distinct from Gemini API SDK behavior.

Reduce overload before adding another model to the chain

Fallbacks do not replace demand management. Google Cloud’s Vertex AI guidance identifies several ways to reduce avoidable pressure:

  • Smooth arrivals. Use admission control or queueing to avoid sharp request bursts. A queue can absorb short spikes for work that does not need an immediate response.
  • Send less repeated context. Cache repeated context where appropriate, and use concise prompts, summaries, and shorter output requirements to reduce token load.
  • Choose routing and capacity options to fit the workload. Google describes the global endpoint as a way, where appropriate, to route requests across regions rather than relying only on one regional endpoint. Its guidance presents Priority PayGo for critical, unpredictable user-facing traffic; Provisioned Throughput for consistently high real-time traffic; and Flex or Batch for latency-tolerant or asynchronous work. Product terms and model availability can change, so confirm current applicability before building around an option.
  • Protect the application boundary. A gateway-level circuit breaker can stop repeated calls to a failing upstream and support a graceful response; Google’s guidance names Apigee as one option.

Choose the fallback by failure type and user impact

There is no universal fallback sequence prescribed for every Gemini application. The right action depends on what failed, how long the user can wait, and whether an alternative can meet the same contract.

Situation Practical response Main trade-off
Transient 429 or 503 with time remaining Make a bounded retry with exponential backoff and jitter. May recover without changing providers, but consumes latency and retry budget.
Fixed quota or spend limit reached Stop retrying that constrained path; defer eligible work, reduce demand, or use a prevalidated alternative. Repeated retries add load without removing the limit; alternatives may cost more or produce different results.
Latency-sensitive interactive request nearing its deadline Return a deliberate degraded response or switch to a validated low-latency path before the request deadline expires. Preserves responsiveness at the possible expense of answer detail or capability.
Latency-tolerant or asynchronous task Queue the work for later processing, or use a suitable batch path. Can avoid failing the user-facing request, but completion is delayed.
Repeated upstream failures Open a circuit breaker and serve the defined degraded behavior while the upstream is unavailable. Limits repeated failed calls, but some requests will not receive the normal result during the open interval.
Alternative provider or model is available Route only if it has been tested against the application’s requirements. Can reduce reliance on one capacity pool, but compatibility, privacy terms, cost, latency, and output quality may differ.

For an automatic provider switch, validate structured-output formats, tool behavior, safety behavior, data-handling terms, and total cost—including the cost of retries—before enabling it. Do not assume that another model will preserve the same quality or behavior merely because it accepts a similar prompt.

Put retry, latency, and fallback budgets in one policy

Define a request-level deadline first, then allocate only part of it to retries. Once the retry budget is exhausted—or the remaining time is too short for a useful response—stop calling the failing path and take the planned degraded, queued, or alternate route. This prevents retries from consuming all the time available to serve the user.

Make the policy explicit per workload rather than copying one global retry count across interactive, asynchronous, Gemini API, and Vertex AI traffic. Track the failure category, attempts, elapsed time, and final route. Review the policy when SDK defaults, model availability, quotas, or service-tier terms change; Google’s documented limits and capacity options are operational guidance, not a guarantee of uptime.
