Managed Postgres and a custom API are not competing alternatives: one is a way to run your database, the other is an application boundary for deciding what an agent can do. Many systems use both. Choose the access pattern based on whether agents need business-level actions and application-specific controls, or only a small, well-governed set of data operations.
What are you actually choosing?
A managed PostgreSQL service takes on some database hosting and operational responsibilities. It does not decide how an agent authenticates, which operations it can invoke, or how requests are validated and coordinated.
A custom API is application code between the agent and the data. It can expose purpose-built operations—such as save a support note or reserve inventory—instead of letting the agent assemble arbitrary database queries. The API can run against managed Postgres, so choosing managed hosting does not rule out a custom interface.
The useful comparison is therefore between two access patterns: a narrow application API in front of Postgres, or a database/Data API boundary for simpler data operations. Both still require deliberate authorization, connection management, and workload planning.

How do the two access patterns compare?
| Decision area | Managed Postgres plus a narrow custom API | Managed Postgres with a database or Data API boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Business actions, application-specific validation, multi-step workflows, or coordination across systems. | A limited set of straightforward CRUD-style operations with explicit database policies. |
| Authorization | The API can authorize each action; database roles and policies can provide an additional layer. | Requires carefully configured row-level security (RLS), policies, and least-privilege grants. Supabase explains its data security model in Securing your data. |
| Connections | A persistent API service can own a reusable application-side pool; serverless API workers may still need a server-side pooler. | The calling runtime still determines the connection approach. Pooling modes can have feature limitations. |
| Operational work | Adds API code, deployment, monitoring, and security review while managed hosting offloads some database operations. | Can mean less custom API code for simple operations, but access policies and the exposed surface still need an owner. |
| Performance and scale | Lets the service shape queries, caching, and rate controls, but adds a component to operate. | Can keep simple paths direct, but does not remove the need to budget for connections, query load, and policy correctness. |
Should agents access Postgres through an API?
Put a narrow custom API between the agent and the database when the agent should ask for application actions rather than choose its own queries. This is especially useful when a request needs validation, authorization tied to application context, a multi-step transaction, or coordination with another system.
For example, an agent-facing operation such as submit a refund request can check the caller’s authority, validate the request, update relevant records, and trigger a follow-up workflow. That is a different contract from allowing a caller to issue general-purpose reads and writes. Keep privileged credentials on the server; the API should expose only the operations the agent is meant to perform.

A database or generated Data API can be a reasonable boundary when the operation set is genuinely narrow and the data policies are explicit. With a frontend-style Supabase Data API, access should be governed by RLS and policies. Supabase’s secret and service-role keys bypass RLS, so they must not be exposed to clients or other untrusted runtimes (Connect to your database; Securing your data).
An API check should not be your only tenant boundary if database policies can enforce the same isolation as defense in depth. Conversely, putting an API in front of the database does not automatically make an unsafe authorization design safe: define and test who may invoke each operation and which records it can affect.

How do you pool Postgres connections for serverless agents?
Choose the connection pattern for the process that actually talks to Postgres. A long-running backend can generally reuse an application-side connection pool, sized to fit the database’s connection budget. Serverless, edge, or rapidly scaling workers often need a server-side pooler so that bursts of short-lived clients do not each consume a persistent database connection. Supabase documents connection methods and pool behavior in Connection pooling and limits and Connect to your database.
Do not treat transaction pooling as a transparent substitute for every connection mode. It can impose session-feature limitations, including limitations involving prepared statements and query pipelining. Verify the requirements of your driver and application against the selected pooler mode before deployment.

- Persistent service: use direct connectivity or an application-side pool appropriate to the database connection budget.
- Serverless or edge workers: evaluate a server-side pooler for the invocation pattern, then check its transaction-mode limitations against the features your code uses.
- Agents with retries or parallel tool calls: include their actual concurrency and retry behavior when estimating connection demand; agent calls can create bursts unlike a single interactive request.
What changes in a multi-tenant system?
Shared-database RLS can make onboarding tenants simpler and reduce operational overhead compared with managing a separate database for every tenant. It does not eliminate noisy-neighbor effects: one tenant’s workload can still compete for shared resources. It can also take extra tenant-level instrumentation to attribute resource use and investigate problems. AWS describes these tradeoffs in its PostgreSQL pool model.
Decide whether shared-database isolation meets each customer’s and regulator’s expectations before adopting it. If it does, test RLS boundaries and plan how to monitor tenant activity and resource use; if it does not, evaluate a stronger isolation model against the extra operational work it entails.

Can Postgres scale for agent workloads?
Postgres can support large workloads, but a scale example is not a capacity estimate for a different application. OpenAI’s 2026 engineering case study, Scaling PostgreSQL to power 800 million ChatGPT users, describes database load growing by more than 10x over the prior year and a deployment with one primary Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server instance and nearly 50 read replicas across multiple regions. The article frames this system in the context of 800 million users; those figures describe OpenAI’s case, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for another system.
The case study also describes overload cascades and distinct costs associated with heavy writes. Its lesson for a new system is to plan for workload shape and failure behavior, not to infer a universal throughput ceiling. A read-heavy workload with replicas has different needs from one dominated by writes or expensive queries.
Before production, load-test with realistic agent concurrency, retries, query costs, and write bursts. Include overload behavior in the test: retries can amplify pressure if agents keep repeating requests while the database or API is already struggling.
How should you decide?
- Choose managed Postgres if you want managed database hosting and your workload benefits from relational transactions and SQL. This settles the hosting choice, not the agent access boundary.
- Choose a narrow API boundary when the agent should call business-level actions, or when authorization, validation, or workflow coordination belongs in application logic.
- Consider direct or generated database/API access when the allowed operation set is simple, policies are explicit, and you can test the RLS and privilege boundaries.
- Match pooling to the runtime. Account for persistent versus short-lived workers, expected concurrency, and any pooler feature limitations.
- Set tenant and recovery requirements. Check whether shared-database RLS meets isolation expectations and define the monitoring, recovery, and regional requirements your service must satisfy.
- Test the actual workload. Exercise concurrent calls, retries, expensive reads, and write bursts rather than relying on a published system’s scale as a proxy.
There is no universal vendor winner or price comparison established here. Provider costs, performance, backups, and contractual guarantees depend on the provider, plan, geography, configuration, and contract; compare those specifics for the shortlist and workload you actually have.
