If your work or school Chromebook won’t let you change its time zone, the setting may be locked by your organization’s administrator. You can change it yourself only when the setting is available in Chromebook Settings; an enterprise policy restriction requires an administrator to review or change the policy.
Check whether you can change the time zone
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen, then open Settings.
- In System preferences, find Time zone. You can also search within Settings for the setting. Google documents manual time-zone selection and options to set it automatically, including location-based detection using Wi-Fi or mobile networks. Google’s Chromebook settings guide and date and time instructions explain the available controls.
- If the control is editable, select the correct time zone. If you want the Chromebook to determine it, review the automatic options instead.
Recognize an administrator restriction
If the time-zone option is missing, unavailable, or marked as controlled by enterprise policy, the organization may have set a device-level restriction. Google identifies the administrator as the owner of a work or school Chromebook and directs users to contact that administrator for help. Find your Chromebook’s owner account.
There is no user-side setting that overrides an active organization policy. Ask your school or employer’s IT support or Chromebook administrator to review the restriction. The organization decides whether it will allow a change; Google’s public documentation does not promise approval.
What to include in your request
Tell IT what you need, why it matters, and whether you need a lasting change or a temporary correction. You can send a message such as:

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Could you review the Timezone setting for my managed Chromebook? I need it set to [time zone] because [work or school reason]. The setting appears to be controlled by enterprise policy. Please let me know whether this can be allowed for my device or device group, and whether the change can be temporary or needs to remain in place.
This is suggested wording, not a required Google form or a guarantee that the request will be approved.

What IT can check
For diagnosis, support staff—or a user following IT’s instructions—can open chrome://policy, select the option to reload policies, and inspect the applicable policy and its source. This page helps identify active policy; it does not provide an override. Google’s guide to viewing current Chrome policies describes the process.
An authorized administrator can review the device-level Timezone setting in the Google Admin console. The documented path is Devices > Chrome > Settings > Device settings; the administrator should select the organizational unit that contains the Chromebook and review the Timezone control. Device settings can be applied at the top organizational unit or a child organizational unit. See Google’s ChromeOS device policy instructions.

The organization should also consider any device restriction schedule that relies on the device’s time zone. Google says device settings typically take effect in minutes, but may take up to 24 hours to apply for everyone. Google’s policy timing guidance.

First determine whether the Chromebook is using a manually selected zone or an automatic, location-based option. If automatic detection is inaccurate, ask whether the network or location conditions are affecting the result. Google notes that a VPN may be a reason to prefer automatic network-based location detection. If the setting instead shows an enterprise-policy restriction, the administrator—not a different user-side selection—must review it.
