New Zealand Police said a 33-year-old man was charged with murder after a man died on Sunnymead Road in Glen Innes, Auckland, on Thursday, 1 October 2026. The charge is an allegation, not a conviction. Police said the accused was due to appear in Auckland District Court on Friday, 2 October; the sources available here do not confirm what happened at that appearance.

What happened on Sunnymead Road?

Police said they were called to Sunnymead Road at 2.45pm on Thursday, 1 October, after reports that a person had been critically injured. Acting Detective Inspector Craig Bolton of Auckland City CIB said a male was pronounced dead at the scene. Police opened a homicide investigation.

RNZ’s Auckland news listing separately reported that St John was notified at 2.47pm. That is the ambulance service’s notification time, not the Police call time.

What is known about the charge and court appearance?

Police said a 33-year-old man was taken into custody and that a murder charge was laid overnight. Bolton said: “A 33-year-old male was taken into custody, and a murder charge was laid overnight.” Police said the accused was due to appear in Auckland District Court on 2 October.

The available reports do not establish the result of that appearance, whether a plea was entered, or whether the accused was granted bail or remanded. A charge is not proof of guilt; the accused’s identity and the deceased’s identity are not stated in the reports.

What are Police asking witnesses to report?

In its 2 October update, Police said it was not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident, while area canvasses continued. Residents could expect an increased Police presence. Police asked anyone who saw two vehicles travelling in tandem in Panmure or Glen Innes on Thursday afternoon to come forward:

  • A black Audi A3
  • A silver Toyota Crown

The Police release does not explain why investigators are interested in the vehicles or establish that either vehicle, or anyone in it, was involved in the death.
