You can make a home router more secure by installing supported firmware updates, replacing default administrator credentials, and choosing WPA3 Personal—or WPA2 Personal (AES) when WPA3 is unavailable or incompatible. Then disable remote management, WPS, or UPnP if you do not need them. Router settings vary, and the evidence does not show that manufacturers universally or deliberately weaken security; check your own model before assuming it is exposed.

Why router defaults deserve a check

A router’s default settings may prioritize easy setup or compatibility over the strongest available protection. A study of examined router defaults found security weaknesses, but that does not establish that every router is insecure or that manufacturers intentionally weakened security. The practical step is to review your own router’s settings and support status.

NIST’s consumer-router cybersecurity requirements, published September 10, 2024, frame router security as important to protecting data and the integrity and availability of a home network. Separately, on July 13, 2026, CISA and partner agencies issued a router-hygiene notice addressing ongoing opportunistic exploitation of vulnerable networking devices. That notice is a reason to take updates seriously, not evidence that your particular router has been compromised.

Secure the router in this order

  1. Identify the router and its support page. Find the model number on the device or in your ISP account, then locate the manufacturer’s current instructions. Router interfaces and available controls differ by model. If your ISP supplied the router or manages its settings, consult the ISP’s instructions as well.
  2. Check for firmware updates. Use the manufacturer’s update instructions or your ISP’s update process. Updates can address vulnerabilities; do not assume every router updates itself or uses the same menu path. If an update option is unavailable or settings are locked, ask the manufacturer or ISP what support remains.
  3. Replace default administrator credentials. Set a unique password for the router’s administrative interface. This is separate from the Wi-Fi passphrase: the administrator password controls router settings, while the Wi-Fi passphrase lets devices join the network. Change the default network name (SSID) too, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Choose the strongest compatible Wi-Fi security mode. Set WPA3 Personal if the router and your devices support it. If they do not, use WPA2 Personal with AES. Apple identifies WPA2/WPA3 transitional mode as an option when newer and older devices need to share a network; WPA2 Personal (AES) is another fallback for older devices. Avoid WEP, WPA Personal, TKIP, and open security modes. Microsoft also recommends WPA3 when the router and PC support it.
  5. Review remote management, WPS, and UPnP. Turn each off if you do not need it, but first consider whether a person or device in your household depends on it. These options may be named or located differently across router interfaces.
  6. Replace the router only for a concrete support or security gap. If a supported update still leaves the router offering only WPA or WEP, the FTC advises considering a replacement. Before choosing one, confirm that the manufacturer provides security updates and that the router is compatible with your devices and ISP.

Which security mode should you use?

Mode When to use it Guidance
WPA3 Personal When the router and connected devices support it Preferred option in FTC, Apple, and Microsoft guidance.
WPA2/WPA3 transitional mode When newer and older devices need to connect to the same network Apple lists this as a compatibility option. Check the router’s documentation and test your devices.
WPA2 Personal (AES) When WPA3 is unavailable or incompatible Recommended fallback; do not confuse it with WPA2 using TKIP.
WEP, WPA Personal, TKIP, or open Do not use for a secured home network These are deprecated or lack the recommended protection. If the router cannot offer WPA2/AES or WPA3 after updating, consider replacement.

What the convenience settings do—and when to disable them

Remote management

Remote management allows administration of the router from outside the home network. If you do not need to manage the router remotely, turn it off. If an ISP or other service relies on it, ask the provider how the router is administered before changing the setting. FTC guidance on secure remote access also emphasizes changing preset router credentials and keeping software patched.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

WPS

Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a convenience feature for connecting devices without entering the Wi-Fi passphrase in the usual way. Disable it if you do not use it. If you rely on it for a device, check the router’s documentation for an alternative connection method before switching it off.

UPnP

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) lets devices and applications request network configuration changes automatically. Some devices or applications may rely on it. Disable it if you do not need that functionality; if something stops working afterward, consult the router and device documentation to identify the dependency rather than enabling unrelated features.

When a router should be replaced

Age alone does not establish that a router needs replacing. First check whether it still receives security updates and can be configured for WPA3 or WPA2 Personal (AES). The FTC recommends considering a new router when, even after an update, an older device supports only WPA or WEP. Before buying, verify ongoing security-update support, compatibility with your existing devices, and compatibility with your ISP. No particular model can be recommended without knowing those requirements.
