To make a Chromebook louder, raise its volume in Quick Settings, then check Settings > Device > Audio to confirm both the output volume and selected audio device. If the built-in speakers are still too quiet, a compatible Bluetooth speaker is another option; no general ChromeOS setting is documented as able to exceed a Chromebook’s hardware volume limit.
Turn up Chromebook volume
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen to open Quick Settings.
- Drag the volume slider to the right.
- For more control, open Settings > Device > Audio and adjust Output volume. Google’s instructions describe the controls, but exact labels can vary by ChromeOS version and connected device. Google Chromebook audio settings
Check where the sound is playing
A Chromebook may be sending sound to a different device than the built-in speakers. In Audio settings, check the output device and select the one you intend to use. Google indicates the active output with a green check. Raising the volume slider will not help if sound is routed somewhere else.
Use a Bluetooth speaker
A compatible Chromebook can connect to a Bluetooth speaker. Pairing the speaker and choosing it as the active output are separate steps: after pairing, return to Audio settings and select the speaker. A Bluetooth speaker may sound louder, but there is no established loudness increase that applies to every Chromebook-and-speaker combination. Its price also depends on the speaker you choose.

Work out whether the problem is the Chromebook or one audio source
Play audio from another app or source at a similar volume. If only one recording or app sounds quiet, the issue may be specific to that content or app rather than the Chromebook’s output. This comparison is a basic troubleshooting check, not a diagnosis of the device.
What mono audio does—and does not do
Mono audio is an accessibility feature that sends the same sound through both speakers, helping listeners hear content that might otherwise be carried in only one stereo channel. If the built-in speakers remain quiet or distorted
- Recheck the output volume and confirm that the built-in speakers are selected.
- Compare audio from another app or source.
- Find your Chromebook’s exact model and consult its manufacturer’s support information if the speakers remain unusually quiet or sound distorted.
ChromeOS’s general audio instructions do not establish a universal maximum loudness for Chromebook speakers or a software setting that overrides each model’s hardware limit. Avoid assuming that an extension or experimental setting can safely or reliably bypass that limit.
