To make Windows 11 feel more efficient, customize the settings that cause friction in your routine: arrange recurring windows with Snap, control notifications, review startup apps, bring frequently used tools within reach, and choose a power mode that fits whether you are plugged in. Change one area at a time so you can tell whether it helps. Open Settings with Windows+I, or use Settings search to find a feature by name.
Start with the task that slows you down
Pick the main problem you want to solve: repeatedly arranging windows, interruptions, apps taking too long to be ready after sign-in, hard-to-find tools, or battery life. There is no universal set of efficiency settings, and none guarantees a particular speed or productivity gain. Windows labels and available choices can vary by update and device; if a path differs, search Settings for the feature name.
Arrange recurring work with Snap
Snap layouts let you place open windows into preset arrangements, while Snap Assist helps fill the remaining spaces with other open apps. To choose a layout, hover over a window’s maximize button or press Windows+Z. Select a layout position; then choose other open windows when Snap Assist offers them. Snap groups can help you return to a saved arrangement of apps.

For more control, open Settings > System > Multitasking and expand Snap settings. Depending on your Windows version, you can choose behaviors such as showing suggested windows for the remaining spaces, displaying layouts when hovering over the maximize button or dragging a window to the top of the screen, showing snapped windows in the taskbar, Task View, and Alt+Tab, and allowing a window to snap before you drag it all the way to an edge. Layout choices can vary with display size.

Reduce interruptions without missing useful alerts
To keep important app alerts while cutting back on others, go to Settings > System > Notifications. Review senders individually and turn off notifications only for apps whose alerts can wait. This is a better fit than silencing everything if you need to stay reachable for particular tools.
For a bounded quiet period, use Focus sessions. A session can turn on Do not disturb, hide taskbar badges and flashing for apps, and show a notification when the session ends. Use it when you want fewer interruptions for a stretch of work; use per-app notification settings to decide which alerts should remain available outside that period.

Review startup apps selectively
Apps that launch automatically at sign-in can add startup activity. Microsoft Support says they “can impact both the speed of your startup and the overall performance of your system” (Configure Startup applications in Windows).

- Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps.
- Review the list. Turn off only apps you recognize and do not need ready immediately after signing in.
- If you are investigating a slowdown, use Task Manager to inspect CPU, memory, disk, and network activity as you use the PC.
Do not disable everything by default: some apps may need to be available as soon as you sign in. Also, not every startup task necessarily appears in the same list, because apps can use other mechanisms to start. The effect of changing an item depends on the PC and how you use it; it is not a guaranteed fix for every slowdown.

Make frequently used apps easier to reach
Pin apps you use often to Start, and pin folders or group app pins into folders if that suits your routine. On the taskbar, choose centered or left alignment and adjust which pinned apps and available tray items you want visible. Fewer visible items can reduce clutter; keeping more within sight can work better if you switch among many apps. Windows 11’s supported taskbar position remains at the bottom, so treat these built-in controls as the ordinary customization options.

Choose based on the task and whether you are plugged in, rather than treating one mode as best for every situation. Device configuration or a custom power plan can affect which choices are available.
