You can usually change subtitle or caption size and appearance in your TV or streaming platform’s Accessibility settings. The menu differs by platform, and system-wide styling may not apply inside every app. Choose the instructions for your device below; if the change has no effect, check the app’s own subtitle controls.
Samsung Smart TV: change caption size and colors
- Press Home on the remote and open Settings.
- Go to General > Accessibility > Caption Settings.
- Open Digital Caption Options and adjust the available size, background color, or font color settings.
Samsung notes that menu names and screens can vary by model and software version. Some caption functions also depend on the program supporting broadcast captions. See Samsung’s closed-caption instructions.
Android TV and Google TV: find caption preferences
Android TV
Open Settings > Device Preferences > Accessibility > Captions. Select the caption source, then choose from the options available on your TV.
Google TV
Open Settings > Accessibility > Captions to find caption controls. Android caption preferences can include text size and caption style, but Google cautions that these preferences may not work in apps that do not support them. For platform-specific directions, see Android TV accessibility help and Google TV accessibility help.

Open Accessibility > Caption style. Roku provides separate options for text, background, and window styling. Text controls can include font, edge effect, size, color, and opacity.
These styles apply only in apps that use the Roku device’s closed-caption settings. If a specific app ignores them, look for subtitle or caption settings in that app. See Roku’s closed-caption instructions.

Apple TV app: create or choose a subtitle style
These steps apply to the Apple TV app on a supported TV or streaming device, not necessarily the device’s system-wide caption settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open the Apple TV app’s Settings.
- Choose Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning > Style.
- Select an existing style or create one, then adjust the available options, such as font, size, text color and opacity, background color and opacity, edge style, and highlight.
Apple says that not all styling features are available on every smart TV, streaming device, game console, or in every region. Check Apple’s subtitle and caption settings guide for details.

Why a subtitle setting may not change the picture
Caption appearance depends on both the controls you changed and the subtitle track the program and app provide. Platform settings may not style captions in an app that does not support them; Samsung also notes that some functions require broadcast-caption support.
- Check the app’s playback or subtitle menu for its own size or style options.
- Confirm that captions or subtitles are enabled and that the content provides the selected track.
- Distinguish the Apple TV app’s style settings from the TV’s system-wide accessibility settings.
- If the controls differ from these paths, check your model’s menus; labels and availability can vary by device, software version, and region.
How to choose the right settings menu
Start with the platform that is actually playing the video, then consider what you want to change and whether the app honors the platform’s preferences.
