To make stairs in Minecraft, use a crafting table and place six matching blocks in a stair-step pattern. The recipe gives you four stairs. For eligible materials, a stonecutter makes one stair from one block.
Craft stairs with a crafting table

Gather six blocks of the material you want to use. The recipe takes the finished block form; the ingredients needed to make that block vary by material.

Open a crafting table, which provides the 3×3 crafting grid. Place the blocks in this pattern:

Take the four stairs from the result slot.
Minecraft’s crafting guide explains that you can open the recipe book from your inventory or a crafting table. When you have the necessary materials, select a recipe to see its ingredients and fill the grid.

Use a stonecutter for eligible materials
Put one eligible block into a stonecutter and select its stair variant to get one stair. That uses fewer blocks when you need a specific number than the crafting-table recipe, which uses six blocks for four stairs. Stonecutting support depends on the material: the cited Minecraft Wiki stairs reference says wooden stairs and bamboo mosaic stairs are not obtained this way. Check the in-game recipe book for the material and edition you are playing.
Mojang’s January 2019 Java snapshot note introduced the stonecutter as a way to craft several stone-related blocks, including stairs. That historical announcement does not establish that every stair material is stonecuttable today.

Choose the method by material and quantity

Place stairs facing the right way
Use the stairs while targeting the block surface or space where you want them. Their facing and whether they sit upright or upside down depend on where you aim, as described in the Minecraft Wiki stairs reference:

Target the top of a block or the lower part of its side to place an upright stair.

Target the bottom of a block or the upper part of its side to place an upside-down stair.

Adjacent stairs can join into inner or outer corners based on their orientation.

Check edition-specific stair options
Java Edition 26.3, published September 15, 2026, added stair and slab variants for every colored wool block and every colored concrete block. The official Java Edition 26.3 notes also state that concrete stairs and slabs can be crafted with a stonecutter. These notes apply to Java Edition; check Bedrock Edition’s own current changelog or in-game recipe book rather than assuming the same release timing or availability.

The recipe does not appear: Confirm that you have the finished block type the stair recipe uses, then check the recipe book for that material and your edition.

The stonecutter does not offer stairs: That material may not be stonecutter-eligible. Use the crafting-table pattern if the recipe is available.

The stair faces the wrong way: Check which side of the block you targeted and whether you aimed at its upper or lower part; remove and replace it with the intended target position.
