Use vcsi’s -S (or --actual-size) option to make each contact-sheet thumbnail at the video’s actual 1:1 resolution. The final sheet is a composite, however: its dimensions depend on the chosen grid and number of frames, so this option does not set one fixed output resolution or increase the source video’s resolution.
What “actual size” means in vcsi
vcsi captures frames from a video and arranges them into a contact sheet. Its -S / --actual-size switch requests thumbnails at the source video’s actual resolution. For example, it preserves a frame’s source dimensions rather than making all thumbnails conform to a separately specified sheet width.
That is different from the dimensions of the finished image. Each thumbnail may be full resolution, but arranging several frames in rows and columns produces a composite whose width and height depend on the layout and sample count. The project documentation does not state a universal maximum sheet size or memory limit.
Install vcsi and check its prerequisites
The project documents installation with either pip or uv. Its command-line use also requires ffmpeg and ffprobe to be available on your PATH. Python dependencies listed by the project include numpy, pillow, jinja2, texttable, and parsedatetime. Consult the current vcsi project instructions for installation details and platform-specific package availability, which can change.

After installation and confirming the FFmpeg commands are callable, pass the video file, actual-size switch, grid, and output path:

vcsi input-video.mp4 -S -g 4x4 -o contact-sheet.pngThis example asks for a 4-by-4 arrangement and writes a PNG. It combines documented options; replace input-video.mp4 with the path to your file. The project’s README documents -S, -g, and -o as controls for actual-size thumbnails, grid arrangement, and output path respectively.

These options control different aspects of the result; changing one does not make the others redundant.

To make a sheet easier to handle, adjust the number of samples and grid shape as well as the output format and quality. Full-resolution thumbnails combined into one image can create a large composite; the amount depends on the video and chosen settings, and the project does not publish a general size estimate or performance guarantee.
