Technology is likely to make enterprise employee training more continuous, role-specific and digitally delivered, with immersive simulations useful for selected hands-on tasks. But tools alone do not make training effective: organizations need to connect learning to real work, provide practice and feedback, teach responsible technology use, and make participation accessible.
Why enterprise training is changing
New tools are changing the tasks employees perform and the skills those tasks require. In the United Kingdom, more than 44% of organizations surveyed for the 2026 Skills for Artificial Intelligence (SKAI) report said they used AI tools daily. That is a finding from a UK employer survey with 536 responses, supported by workshops involving around 150 organizations and 10 case studies—not a global estimate. The report identifies a gap between growing AI use and workforce capability. Read the UK government’s SKAI report and evidence.
The shift is not limited to AI. The OECD reports that, on average across its member countries, around four in ten adults take part in formal or non-formal learning for job-related reasons. It also finds that low-skilled workers and people in roles exposed to displacement are often less likely to access training. That makes access and opportunity central parts of any enterprise training plan, not details to address after choosing a platform. See the OECD Skills Outlook 2024.
What technology can—and cannot—change
Digital courses and learning systems can distribute material to employees in different locations and support ongoing learning. AI-related instruction can help employees understand tools they encounter in their work. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) can provide simulated practice for selected tasks. These are ways to deliver or support learning, not evidence that a particular device or platform will improve performance by itself.

A 2025 Instructure survey offers a bounded example of perceived readiness: 70% of surveyed U.S. workers said they did not feel ready to succeed amid changes in technology, AI and career paths. The Harris Poll conducted the online survey in the United States on April 23–25, 2025, among 1,210 employed adults aged 18 and older; the reported credible interval for the full sample was plus or minus 3.4 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. It was a commissioned U.S. poll, not a measure of workers worldwide. Read Instructure’s workforce readiness report.
The OECD also reports that the share of employment made up of workers with skills to develop and maintain AI systems almost tripled in less than a decade. This refers to AI-system specialists, not the broader group of employees who use AI tools. See OECD’s Trends Shaping Education 2025.

Build training around work, not the technology
Start with a specific task or capability gap
Identify which roles, tasks and decisions are changing before selecting a course, system or device. A broad introduction may build awareness, but employees also need instruction that reflects what they actually do. The UK SKAI report identifies generic courses that are difficult to assess or disconnected from roles as a barrier to effective AI upskilling.

Employees need to know how to use a tool for suitable tasks, what it can and cannot do, and when it should not be used. The UK government’s guidance calls for technical, non-technical and responsible-AI skills together. Its advice is direct: “Good AI training must be practical and task based.” That is a design recommendation, not proof that a particular course has produced results. Give employees structured practice and feedback
Workers may learn through trial and error, colleagues, online videos or prompts built into the tools they use. Those informal routes can help, but the SKAI report warns that they may produce inconsistent or risky practices. Structured learning can connect explanation to realistic tasks, let employees practise, and make expectations clearer. Leadership support and applied, workflow-based learning appear in the report’s organizational examples.
Make access part of the design
Training that employees cannot fit into their schedules, reach from their work location or use with confidence will not close a skills gap. Account for workload, time, cost, accessibility, digital literacy and the needs of groups that are less likely to receive training. Flexible formats can help, but flexibility should not leave employees without guidance or support.

Choose a format that fits the task
| Approach | Where it may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Digital courses and learning systems | Distributing core material across teams or locations and supporting ongoing learning. | Whether employees can apply the material to role-specific work; completion alone does not establish skill. |
| Task-based AI training | Teaching employees how to use AI appropriately in real workflows, including when not to use it. | Whether practice reflects the job, covers responsible use and gives learners useful feedback. |
| VR or AR simulation | Rehearsing selected practical scenarios, such as responding to a health-and-safety incident. | Whether simulation adds meaningful practice and has an aligned assessment; the evidence cited here does not establish that XR is necessary or cost-effective for every organization. |
The Open University describes VR and AR practice paired with an aligned assessment, including a health-and-safety incident scenario. This illustrates a focused use for immersive training; it does not show that immersive technology is superior for ordinary training or appropriate for every task. Evaluate whether learning transfers to the job
Course attendance and completion can show participation, but they do not show on their own that employees can perform a task. Before training begins, define the capability employees should demonstrate and how it can be assessed in a realistic setting. Depending on the task, that might mean completing a workflow correctly, explaining a decision, or responding appropriately to a simulated situation.

- Task fit: Does the training address a defined role-related skill?
- Practice and feedback: Can employees rehearse the work and learn from mistakes?
- Responsible use: Does the program teach appropriate use, limits and cases where a tool should not be used?
- Access: Can employees participate given time, location, cost, accessibility and digital-literacy constraints?
- Application: Can managers or instructors assess whether the skill appears in work, beyond course completion?
- Implementation: Can the organization maintain the training as tools and workflows change without placing an unrealistic burden on staff?
Evidence about broader organizational outcomes needs similar care. LinkedIn says its learning-culture analysis found associations with retention, internal mobility and management-pipeline indicators. The analysis draws on LinkedIn platform data and a learning-culture index; it should be read as reported association, not independent proof that training caused those outcomes. Read LinkedIn’s Workplace Learning Report.
What the evidence means for enterprise leaders
There is no single technology or course format that the evidence here establishes as best for every enterprise. The practical choice is to identify a capability gap, select a format that supports realistic practice, and check whether employees can apply what they learn. Digital delivery can extend access, task-based AI training can connect instruction to changing workflows, and immersive simulation may help with selected practical scenarios. None replaces job relevance, learner support or responsible-use safeguards.
