Yes—you can add app control, voice commands and schedules to many plug-in lamps and simple appliances without replacing wall switches or opening walls. A smart plug automates by cutting or restoring power, so it works only when the connected device behaves safely and usefully that way. It does not update old wiring or make a questionable outlet safe.

What a smart plug can—and cannot—change

A smart plug fits between a wall outlet and a plug-in device. After setup, its app can switch power remotely or run a schedule; supported models may also work with a compatible voice assistant or smart-home platform. For example, TP-Link documents schedules, timers and Away mode for its Kasa plugs, while Roku documents schedules and grouped control for its plug. TP-Link Kasa setup guide · Roku Indoor Smart Plug SE guide

That makes a plug a low-disruption way to automate a suitable lamp or appliance that already works. It does not dim a lamp unless the plug and lamp are specifically designed for that function, change a wall switch, or make a device smart in every respect. The plug simply interrupts power. Check the device’s instructions if it needs continuous power or a particular shutdown sequence.

Start with a lamp and build one useful routine

  1. Choose a suitable device. Begin with a plug-in lamp in a room where a regular on/off routine would help. Avoid equipment that needs uninterrupted power until you have checked its instructions and the plug’s specifications.
  2. Check the outlet and connection. Use a sound indoor outlet, and confirm whether it is controlled by a wall switch. If someone switches that outlet off, the smart plug loses power and cannot respond until power returns. Roku says its plug returns to its last state when the wall switch is turned back on. Roku Indoor Smart Plug SE guide
  3. Install the manufacturer’s app and connect the plug. Follow the exact model’s setup instructions. Check the Wi-Fi-band requirement before buying: the cited Kasa and Roku guides require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for setup; TP-Link’s Kasa guide says 5 GHz is not supported. TP-Link Kasa setup guide · Roku Indoor Smart Plug SE guide
  4. Name it clearly. Use a name such as “living room lamp” so it is easy to identify in an app or, where supported, a voice assistant.
  5. Set a schedule that matches your routine. Choose regular on and off times in the model’s app. A schedule is useful for repeatable routines; use remote control when you need to switch the device outside those times. TP-Link’s guide documents schedule, timer and Away settings, and Roku documents schedules and grouped control.
  6. Test both power states. Confirm the device behaves as expected when the plug switches off and on. For an appliance beyond a lamp, check its manual and test its return-to-power behavior while you are present.

Check compatibility before choosing a plug

Features vary by exact model, even within one product family. Verify the plug’s supported smart-home platforms, setup requirements, physical size, load rating and intended environment against the device and outlet you plan to use.

Tapo’s FAQ also says its plugs support 2.4 GHz, and that initial setup must be completed in the Tapo app before linking to Alexa or Google Home. • Smart-home platform: Check support for the specific assistant or platform you use. TP-Link’s US listing for the Tapo TP15 describes Matter-compatible setup through the Tapo, Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home apps. Do not assume another model has the same support. TP-Link Tapo TP15 US product page
  • Physical fit: Compare the plug’s dimensions with the available space and neighboring receptacle. A bulky plug may block an adjacent socket; verify the exact model’s size before purchasing.
  • Load rating and device behavior: Match the plug’s rating to the connected device and its load type. The TP15’s US product page lists AC 100–125 V and a maximum of 1800 W at 120 V / 15 A for general resistive load. Those are specifications for that listed model and market, not universal limits or a recommendation for a particular appliance. TP-Link Tapo TP15 US product page
  • Energy monitoring: It is model-specific, not standard on every smart plug. TP-Link identifies the Tapo P110/P115 as energy-monitoring models and the P100/P105 as models without energy monitoring. TP-Link Tapo FAQ
  • Indoor or outdoor use: Confirm the exact plug’s rating for the intended location. The Roku Indoor Smart Plug SE is not weatherproof, and Roku says outdoor use voids its warranty. TP-Link says the plugs covered by its Tapo FAQ are not waterproof or dustproof. Roku Indoor Smart Plug SE guide · TP-Link Tapo FAQ
  • Internet and local operation: Control features can have different network requirements. TP-Link says Tapo plugs can be controlled through the local app without internet, but Smart Actions require a hub for local use. Check the exact model’s documentation for the functions you expect to use. TP-Link Tapo FAQ

Use smart plugs cautiously with appliances

A smart plug does not know whether an appliance is ready to lose power. TP-Link warns that most TVs enter standby rather than fully powering off, and may require manual power-on after power returns. Check the appliance’s instructions before scheduling power interruptions, especially if it depends on a controlled shutdown, must remain continuously powered, or may not restart automatically. TP-Link smart plug and switch FAQ

Before connecting anything beyond a simple lamp, confirm the plug’s maximum load and the appliance’s requirements. TP-Link cautions that combined wattage and amperage must remain within the smart plug’s rated limits. It also advises against connecting a power strip or extension cord to a smart plug because an overload may go unnoticed. Do not daisy-chain these accessories. TP-Link smart plug and switch FAQ

Do not use a smart plug to solve an outlet problem

A smart plug is not an inspection or repair for old electrical wiring. The product guidance cited here explains plug setup and use; it does not establish that a home’s wiring or receptacles are safe. Do not use an outlet that is damaged, loose, hot or otherwise concerning. Have it assessed by a qualified local professional instead of adding a smart-home accessory.
