Mailjet is worth considering in 2026 if you need one hosted service for newsletters, campaign automation and transactional email. Its Free plan allows 6,000 emails per month but limits sending to 200 messages per day and 1,000 contacts. Paid tiers remove or raise important constraints and add capabilities such as segmentation, automation, landing pages and advanced reporting. Whether it is the right choice depends on your monthly volume, contact count, API workload and compliance requirements.

The feature descriptions below reflect Mailjet’s published materials; no independent deliverability or performance test was performed.

What Mailjet includes

Mailjet, also presented as Sinch Mailjet, is a hosted email platform with two related uses:

  • Marketing email: drag-and-drop campaign creation, templates, personalization, segmentation, A/B testing, subscription forms, inbox preview and a WordPress plugin.
  • Transactional sending: API and SMTP relay infrastructure for messages such as account notifications, confirmations and password resets, plus webhooks for event handling.

These are vendor-described capabilities rather than results from a hands-on test. Teams should verify that the editor, integrations and reporting meet their workflow before committing.

Mailjet pricing and plan limits in 2026

Mailjet’s pricing page displays the following examples in US dollars. Plan features and available sending volumes vary by tier.

Plan Displayed price Included email volume Daily cap Contacts
Free $0/month 6,000/month 200/day 1,000
Starter $9/month 8,000/month No daily limit shown on the plan page 2,000
Essential $19/month for the displayed 15,000-email tier 15,000/month example Plan-page allowance; account controls may still apply Unlimited
Premium $29/month for the displayed 15,000-email tier 15,000/month example Plan-page allowance; account controls may still apply Unlimited

Mailjet announced a self-service pricing update effective September 9, 2026. It lists Starter at $9 monthly or an $8.10 monthly equivalent with annual billing, Essential 15k at $19 or $17.10, and Premium 15k at $29 or $26.10 in USD. Annual billing is described as a 10% discount; the annual-equivalent figure is not a month-to-month annual subscription. Currency, volume tier, billing schedule and account status can change the checkout total, so confirm the price shown for your account before purchasing.

What changes as you move up

  • Free: useful for pilots and small lists, but the 200-per-day cap can make the 6,000-message monthly allowance impractical for a concentrated campaign schedule.
  • Starter: raises the contact limit to 2,000 and removes the daily limit shown on the pricing page, while retaining fewer advanced features than higher tiers.
  • Essential: adds unlimited contacts, segmentation, AI-assisted content creation, email preview and validation credits, and a custom unsubscribe page over Starter.
  • Premium: adds advanced statistics, automation, landing pages, team and account management, and priority support. Dedicated IP availability and some extras depend on sending volume.

“Unlimited contacts” does not mean unlimited sending. Every plan remains tied to its purchased email-volume tier, and account, compliance or API-key controls can restrict actual throughput.

Marketing campaigns and newsletters

Mailjet’s campaign toolset is aimed at teams that want visual creation rather than a custom-built email stack. Published capabilities include reusable templates, a drag-and-drop editor, personalization, segmentation, A/B testing, inbox preview and subscription forms. A WordPress plugin is also listed for sites that collect subscribers or publish content in WordPress.

Segmentation is listed with Essential and above, while automation and landing pages are listed with Premium in current plan materials. If those functions are central to your program, compare the required tier at your intended send volume rather than evaluating the Free or Starter feature list alone.

Transactional email, API and SMTP

Mailjet combines campaign tools with transactional infrastructure. Developers can send through the API or SMTP relay, receive event notifications through webhooks, and use bulk functionality for suitable high-frequency operations.

Rate limits and HTTP 429 responses

Mailjet’s developer documentation states: “If you reach a rate limit, our API will return a 429 HTTP error code.” Integrations should treat 429 as a flow-control signal: pause according to the service guidance, retry with backoff, and avoid creating an uncontrolled retry storm. Batch or bulk operations where appropriate instead of issuing unnecessary one-message requests.

Daily sending controls

Paid accounts can set daily send limits by API key. Mailjet says standard paid accounts default to five times their subscription sending limit, while Custom contract accounts default to unlimited. Separate restrictions can result from compliance reviews, new-account controls, free-contact limits, unpaid invoices or key-level settings. Therefore, a plan page’s “no daily sending limit” wording should not be interpreted as a promise of unrestricted account throughput.

Security, privacy and compliance

Mailjet’s help and security materials say the service is ISO 27001 certified and certified as GDPR-compliant by AFNOR. They also describe natively encrypted and replicated stored data, EU-based data centers, customer access to audit reports and security policies, and a HIPAA-ready configuration available on request.

These are Mailjet’s own statements, not an independent audit conducted for this review. For personal, health, financial or other regulated data, obtain the current data processing agreement, review audit evidence and security policies, confirm the data-residency terms, and verify which configuration and contract options are required. “HIPAA-ready” should not be treated as automatic compliance for every account or workflow.

Sending-policy and onboarding constraints

Mailjet prohibits purchased, rented or scraped third-party lists and sets acceptable sending-metric thresholds. It says threshold parameters may be revised. Use permission-based lists, maintain clear consent records and check the current policy before importing contacts or launching a large campaign.

New accounts and unusual traffic may be subject to compliance review or temporary restrictions. Plan an authenticated-domain setup, list-validation process and gradual volume ramp rather than assuming that a newly opened account can immediately send at its nominal monthly allowance.

Who should choose Mailjet?

Good fit

  • A small organization that wants to test newsletters at no software cost and can work within 200 messages per day.
  • A product team that needs both marketing campaigns and API/SMTP transactional messages from one provider.
  • A growing list that needs segmentation and unlimited contacts on Essential or higher.
  • A marketing team that specifically values Premium automation, landing pages, advanced statistics or team controls.

Look carefully before buying

  • High-volume senders whose workload depends on sustained API throughput or a dedicated IP.
  • Organizations that require contractual compliance commitments, audit evidence or a particular data-residency arrangement.
  • Teams expecting “no daily limit” to override account, API-key or compliance controls.
  • Senders using purchased or scraped lists; those practices conflict with the stated sending policy.

How to compare Mailjet with another provider

Use the same workload and volume when comparing services. Check:

  • Monthly price at your actual email volume, currency and billing term.
  • Contact limits and whether contacts, emails or both are metered.
  • Editor, segmentation, A/B testing, automation, landing-page and collaboration features.
  • Transactional API and SMTP options, webhook coverage, documented rate limits and retry behavior.
  • Support tier, account controls and dedicated-IP eligibility.
  • Data location, security documentation, contractual privacy terms and compliance configuration.
  • List-approval, onboarding and deliverability-policy requirements.

Bottom line: is Mailjet worth it in 2026?

Mailjet is a credible option when a single hosted platform must handle newsletters and transactional email. The Free plan is genuinely useful for low-volume testing, but its 200-per-day cap and 1,000-contact limit are decisive constraints. Essential is the practical step for unlimited contacts and segmentation; Premium is the tier to examine when automation, landing pages, advanced statistics, team management or priority support matter.

Choose it only after checking the checkout price, expected API rate, account-level sending controls and the documentation required for your data. The headline plan allowance is only one part of the decision.
