MagSafe and Qi2 are related magnetic charging systems, not competing technologies. Apple’s MagSafe is its branded charger and accessory system; Qi2 is a cross-brand standard whose Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) is based on MagSafe technology Apple contributed. To choose between them, check your exact iPhone, the charger’s generation, and its required power adapter: original Qi2 supports up to 15W, while Qi2 25W is a newer standard, and Apple MagSafe rates vary by model and charger.
What’s different about MagSafe and Qi2?
MagSafe is Apple’s name for its magnetic charging and accessory system. Qi2 is a Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) standard used by products from multiple brands. The WPC’s Qi v2.0 introduced a magnetic profile, MPP, based on MagSafe technology contributed by Apple. It also includes an Enhanced Power Profile (EPP) without magnets, so a product described as Qi-compliant is not necessarily magnetic; look for Qi2/MPP certification if magnetic alignment matters.
| What to compare | MagSafe | Qi2 |
|---|---|---|
| What the name means | Apple’s branded charger and accessory system | A WPC standard with certified products from multiple brands |
| Magnetic alignment | Apple’s magnetic system | Magnetic when the product uses the MPP profile; not every Qi-compliant product has magnets |
| Power generation | Apple’s peak rates depend on the iPhone, charger model, adapter, and conditions; specified combinations reach up to 25W | Original Qi2 supports up to 15W; Qi2 25W is a distinct, newer generation |
| What to verify | Exact MagSafe charger model and Apple’s adapter requirements for your iPhone | Qi2 certification and whether it is Qi2 15W or Qi2 25W, plus the maker’s adapter requirements |
Does Qi2 charge an iPhone at 15W or 25W?
Both figures can be correct, depending on the Qi2 generation. Original Qi2 launched in November 2023 with support for up to 15W. In July 2025, the WPC announced Qi v2.2.1 under the Qi2 25W name. The WPC described that generation as delivering nearly 70% more power than original Qi2; that is a standards-level power comparison, not evidence that an iPhone charges nearly 70% faster.
Check the charger’s actual certification and product specifications rather than relying on a listing that says only “magnetic” or “Qi2.” WPC logo guidance distinguishes Qi2 (version 2.0 with MPP) from Qi2 25W (version 2.2 with MPP). The WPC certification database lists Apple MagSafe Charger A3502 as Qi v2.2.1 certified with the MPP25 profile and 25.0W potential load power, with a certification date of January 29, 2026. That record applies to the listed model, not every charger sold under the MagSafe name.

How fast is Apple MagSafe with your iPhone?
Apple’s support page, published March 31, 2026, gives peak rates for specific combinations. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Actual delivered power varies by iPhone, adapter, and system conditions; Apple also documents limits when wired accessories are connected. The table summarizes the combinations and qualifications Apple lists.
| iPhone grouping in Apple’s support guidance | Peak rate and required MagSafe charger | Power adapter requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Selected iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 combinations | Up to 25W with MagSafe charger A3502, A3503, A2580, or A3250 | 30W or greater, meeting at least 15V/2.0A |
| iPhone Air | Up to 20W peak | Follow Apple’s listed charger and adapter combination for the specific device |
| iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro | Up to 22.5W peak | Follow Apple’s listed charger and adapter combination for the specific device |
| iPhone 17e, iPhone 15, and earlier models in Apple’s listed group | Up to 15W with MagSafe Charger A2140 | USB-C adapter of 20W or greater meeting Apple’s specified voltage/current ratings |
| iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini | Up to 12W | At least 9V/2.03A |
Apple’s exact supported combinations and adapter details are in How to use your MagSafe Charger with iPhone. Treat “up to” as a peak rating, not a promised charging speed or charge time.

Do you need a special power adapter?
Possibly. A magnetic charger’s maximum output does not tell you what adapter it needs, or what an iPhone will accept. Apple specifies adapter requirements for the MagSafe peak rates above; some MagSafe products may be sold without an adapter. For a third-party Qi2 charger, check the maker’s stated input and adapter requirements and confirm that your iPhone supports the advertised rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Match the exact iPhone model to the charger’s supported-device list.
- For MagSafe, match the charger model number and adapter specification to Apple’s guidance.
- For Qi2, check whether the charger is certified as original Qi2 or Qi2 25W and whether it uses MPP.
- Do not infer the phone’s charging rate from the wattage printed on the charger alone.
Which charger should you buy?
Choose MagSafe if you want Apple’s named system
If you prefer Apple’s branded charger and accessory system, choose a MagSafe model that Apple lists for your iPhone. For the highest Apple-specified peak rate, verify the exact supported iPhone, MagSafe charger number, and adapter requirement rather than assuming every MagSafe charger reaches the same maximum.

Choose Qi2 if you want a cross-brand magnetic option
If you want a magnetic charger from another brand, compare Qi2-certified models. Check whether a product is original Qi2 (up to 15W) or Qi2 25W, and verify that your iPhone supports the rate you want. Certification and the maker’s adapter requirements matter more than a generic “magnetic” label.
Keep a charger that already works for you
If your current compatible charger aligns reliably and gives you satisfactory speed, the distinction between the standards alone is not a reason to replace it. There is no controlled same-iPhone, same-condition head-to-head test established here to show that third-party Qi2 is always faster, cooler, or more efficient than Apple MagSafe.

Why peak watts do not tell you charge time
Peak power is one part of charging performance, not a universal time-to-charge promise. Apple says delivered power varies with the iPhone, adapter, and system conditions. The WPC’s nearly-70%-more-power figure compares Qi2 standards’ power levels; it is not a measured iPhone charging-time improvement. No charge-time comparison between MagSafe and Qi2 follows from those ratings alone.
