Use Activity Monitor when you need to identify a process, investigate system activity, run diagnostics, or take action such as quitting an unresponsive app. Use a menu bar system monitor when you want selected readings to stay visible as you work. If all you need is a quick CPU glance, Activity Monitor can also show CPU activity in the Dock.

What is the difference between Activity Monitor and a menu bar monitor?

Activity Monitor is macOS’s built-in tool for examining processes and investigating what the system is doing. A third-party menu bar monitor is primarily for keeping chosen readings in view without opening a separate utility. They overlap in some readings, but they are suited to different tasks: diagnosis and process management versus persistent at-a-glance monitoring.

When Activity Monitor is the better choice

Apple’s Activity Monitor User Guide documents views for processes, CPU, GPU, memory, energy, disk, network, and cache activity. It also covers diagnostics and managing processes. That makes Activity Monitor the more useful first stop when you need to connect a symptom—such as sluggishness—to a particular app or process, or decide what to do about it.

Find a process and investigate activity

Open Activity Monitor and choose the relevant view, such as CPU or Memory, to examine system activity and processes. For CPU checks, Apple defines System as CPU capability used by macOS processes, User as capability used by opened apps and their processes, and Idle as capability not in use. Those categories help explain a reading; they are not a diagnosis by themselves.

Take action on a troublesome process

Activity Monitor can help locate and force quit a troublesome app or process when the Mac is sluggish or unresponsive. Apple’s guide also covers diagnostics and other process-management topics. A menu bar reading may flag activity, but it should not be treated as a substitute for Activity Monitor’s process-level inspection and actions.

When a menu bar system monitor is more useful

A menu bar monitor fits a different need: keeping selected system readings available while you continue working. It can be useful if you routinely want to glance at more than CPU use, or prefer configurable summaries, graphs, and alerts instead of opening Activity Monitor for every check.

Can Activity Monitor replace a menu bar CPU meter?

For a CPU-only glance, it may be enough. Apple’s CPU activity guidance documents CPU Usage and recent CPU History windows, and explains how to configure Activity Monitor’s Dock icon to display CPU activity. These built-in options narrow the gap if you only want to keep an eye on CPU.

They do not establish that the Dock duplicates third-party modules for memory, sensors, battery, alerts, or other categories. Choose based on the readings you actually want visible, not on an assumption that all menu bar features have a built-in equivalent.

How to choose between the tools

What matters Activity Monitor Menu bar monitor
Main job Inspect processes, investigate system activity, and take process-management or diagnostic actions, as documented by Apple’s Activity Monitor User Guide. Keep selected readings visible while working; iStat Menus is one example described in its Mac App Store listing.
Coverage Apple documents process, CPU, GPU, memory, energy, disk, network, and cache views in the guide. iStat Menus lists CPU, GPU, memory, disks, network, battery and power, sensors, time, and weather; some information depends on Mac hardware, according to the listing.
Persistent CPU view CPU Usage and recent CPU History windows, plus CPU activity in the Dock, are documented by Apple’s CPU activity guidance. iStat Menus lists configurable and combined menu bar modes in its listing.
Graphs and alerts Apple documents CPU History and diagnostics in its guide. iStat Menus lists history graphs and configurable alerts in its listing.
Compatibility Built into macOS; the cited Apple guide does not state a minimum macOS version. The iStat Menus 7 listing states macOS 14.0 or later; hardware-dependent features are identified in the listing.

Menu bar space is another practical consideration: a layout with many separate readings can take more room than a compact or combined mode. Decide which indicators you will genuinely use and configure the menu accordingly. Feature lists alone do not show that one tool is more accurate, lighter on battery, or more efficient than the other; no comparative testing is established here.

A simple decision rule

  • Choose Activity Monitor to find which process is using resources, inspect a range of system activity, run diagnostics, or manage an unresponsive process.
  • Choose a menu bar monitor to keep selected categories visible during normal work, especially when you want configurable modules, histories, or alerts.
  • Use Activity Monitor’s Dock CPU display if your only goal is a persistent CPU glance and you do not need the broader menu bar features.
