If you want macOS, the 13-inch MacBook Neo is the clearer fit; if you need Windows and prefer a larger OLED screen, look closely at HP’s 14-inch OmniBook 5 OLED. Their reported US starting prices are close—$699 for the Neo and $699.99 for HP—but neither is a universal winner. Check the exact HP configuration and today’s price before deciding.
Which HP laptop is being compared?
The HP is the 14-inch HP OmniBook 5 OLED, identified in Tom’s Hardware’s October 1, 2026 report. That report lists a $699.99 US starting price. HP’s own product pages warn that configurations vary by country and region, so the reported price does not establish which exact US SKU is available at that price.
Apple announced MacBook Neo on March 4, 2026, with availability beginning March 11. Its original US launch price was $599, but that is historical: Tom’s Guide reported a current base price of $699 and an education price of $599 in September 2026. Check Apple’s live store and local retailers for current pricing.

Which operating system and apps do you need?
Choose the Neo if your work or school depends on macOS apps, you prefer macOS, or Apple-device continuity matters to your routine. Choose the HP if required software, accessories, or workplace systems are Windows-specific. The machines’ specifications cannot determine whether a particular app or peripheral will work for you; check its requirements before buying.

Is the screen more important than the laptop’s size?
The HP gives you a larger 14-inch OLED panel, with touch offered on some configurations. Its reported entry panel is rated at 300 nits, which may be modest in a brightly lit room. Look at the exact SKU’s screen details and, if possible, view it under the lighting where you expect to work. OLED, resolution, brightness, reflectivity, and touch are separate considerations.
The Neo is smaller at 13 inches and has a higher stated resolution than the reported HP entry panel. That can suit a buyer who values a compact screen, while someone who wants more screen area may prefer HP. The higher resolution alone does not settle which display will look better: panel type, brightness, and viewing conditions matter too.

How much memory and storage will you get?
Both reported base configurations start at 8GB of memory and 256GB of storage. That is the key starting-point match, but the upgrade paths differ. Tom’s Guide reported that the Neo’s $799 model adds Touch ID and a 512GB SSD without increasing memory beyond 8GB. Tom’s Hardware listed HP launch configurations with up to 16GB of soldered memory and a 512GB SSD; confirm that a configuration is actually sold in your region and compare its price before treating it as an available alternative.
Think about the applications you use at once and how much local storage your files require. If you need more than 8GB of memory, the reported Neo configurations do not provide that option; on HP, check the exact SKU because the memory is soldered and cannot be assumed upgradeable.

What should you check for portability, keyboard, and ports?
The reported weights are close, with the HP at 2.56 pounds and Neo at 2.7 pounds. Weight is only one part of portability: screen size, charger, and the accessories you carry also affect the everyday load.
- MacBook Neo keyboard: Tom’s Guide reports that it lacks a backlit keyboard. If you often type in dim rooms, account for that before choosing it.
- MacBook Neo ports: Apple says its two USB-C ports differ: one supports USB 3 and the other USB 2. Apple’s announcement specifies that an external display connects through the USB 3 port. Check the official Apple announcement against the monitor and accessories you plan to use.
- HP ports and keyboard: The cited launch reporting does not establish all port and keyboard details. Verify those on the exact product listing, especially if you need a particular display output or keyboard feature.
Can you compare their battery life?
Not from the available figures. Tom’s Guide measured 13 hours 28 minutes for the Neo in its test, while HP’s reported “up to 42 hours” is a vendor claim for local video playback. Those figures describe different methods and are not a valid head-to-head comparison. No direct independent test of this exact HP model against the Neo is established here, so do not use the numbers to declare a battery-life winner.

Which laptop should you buy?
Choose the MacBook Neo if…
- You need or prefer macOS, or already rely on Apple apps and devices.
- You want a smaller 13-inch laptop and its 8GB memory and 256GB base storage meet your needs.
- You are comfortable with the lack of a backlit keyboard and the port limitations described above.
Tom’s Guide recommends the Neo as its overall budget pick and describes it as suitable for everyday tasks such as browsing, school work, and general productivity. That is the publication’s assessment, not a guarantee for demanding workloads.
Choose the HP OmniBook 5 OLED if…
- You need Windows and prefer a 14-inch OLED screen.
- You can confirm that the exact configuration you want—potentially touch or 16GB RAM/512GB storage—is available at a price that works for you.
- You have checked the specific model’s brightness, ports, keyboard, and display output for your needs.
HP’s official support page describes the OmniBook 5 family and cautions that configurations vary by country and region. A separate HP Philippines listing confirms one regional configuration, the 14-kf0068TU with Core 5 320, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and a 1920×1200 touch OLED panel rated at 300 nits; it does not confirm US availability or price. Quick Recap
What to verify before paying
- Compare the live price in your country, including education eligibility, discounts, tax, and the price of any higher-memory or larger-storage configuration.
- For HP, confirm the full model or SKU and its memory, SSD, screen resolution, brightness, and touch status. The reported US launch price alone does not identify every specification.
- Check app and peripheral compatibility, keyboard features, ports, and external-display support against your actual requirements.
- Use battery results as a comparison only when the test method and conditions are comparable; do not equate a local-video claim with a review test.
