If text looks blurry or soft on an ultrawide connected to your Mac, first compare the display’s resolution settings, then check the cable or adapter and update software. Apple’s advice for a working external display with a blurry picture is to try changing its resolution; the native mode may look sharper, but it can also make text and interface elements smaller.

Why text can look blurry on a Mac ultrawide

Resolution and scaling

A monitor can offer multiple resolution modes, and those modes can change both apparent sharpness and the size of text and other interface elements. Apple says a display’s default native resolution may look sharper than a scaled resolution. A scaled mode may be more comfortable to read, however, and Apple notes that scaling can affect performance or how app windows fit.

Cable, adapter, or dock limitations

A cable or adapter that cannot carry the monitor’s target resolution and refresh rate may limit the mode macOS can use. A dock or hub can also complicate the signal path. That makes the connection worth checking, but it does not mean every blurry display needs a new cable.

Software, firmware, and model-specific behavior

Apple says software can affect display image quality and the resolutions or refresh rates available. For a third-party monitor, Apple recommends checking the manufacturer’s firmware instructions. Some vendors also document model-specific HiDPI settings; those instructions should not be assumed to apply to every ultrawide or Mac.

Try resolution settings first

  1. Note the current setting. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, select the ultrawide, and record the selected resolution. If the display appears as thumbnails, Control-click them and choose Show List. Turn on Show all resolutions if that option is available. See Apple’s instructions for changing display resolution.
  2. Compare available modes. Try the default resolution and the scaled options. Check text clarity and comfortable text size together: a mode that looks sharper may make menus and text feel too small. Also check whether your apps’ windows fit well and whether performance changes. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for a blurry working display is to try changing the resolution: If your external display is dark or low resolution.

Keep the mode that gives you the best balance for your work. There is no single resolution setting established here as the right choice for every Mac and ultrawide.

Check the cable, adapter, and dock

  1. Reseat the video cable at both the Mac and monitor.
  2. Check the cable and any adapter specifications against the resolution and refresh rate you want to use.
  3. If the monitor is connected through a hub or dock, temporarily connect it directly to the Mac and compare the available modes and image.
  4. For a USB-C adapter, verify that it meets Apple’s DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt compatibility requirements for the display connection.

If a direct connection or known-compatible cable restores the desired resolution or refresh rate, the connection path was limiting the signal. Consider replacing a cable or adapter only when its specifications do not support the monitor’s requirements; it will not correct unrelated scaling preferences or panel characteristics. Apple’s external-display guidance covers cable and adapter capability and connecting through hubs.

Update macOS and check monitor firmware

Install current macOS updates, then consult the monitor maker’s instructions for any firmware update. Menu names and firmware procedures differ by manufacturer, so follow the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming another monitor’s steps apply. Apple includes software and third-party firmware among the checks for external-display image or resolution problems in its display troubleshooting guide.

Use HiDPI instructions only if they fit your monitor and Mac

HiDPI is not a universal fix. BenQ’s instructions for presenting its HiDPI scaling setting apply to the named PD3420Q, PD2705Q, PD2506Q, SW270C, and SW272Q monitors, and the page says the described HiDPI feature is supported only on Macs with Apple silicon. Its process also calls for model-dependent firmware and cable checks, enabling the resolution list, and selecting a HiDPI or default option. Confirm your exact monitor model and follow the current vendor directions before changing those settings: BenQ’s HiDPI scaling instructions (December 9, 2024).

Recover if a resolution change blanks the display

  1. Wait 15 seconds. Apple says macOS may automatically revert to the previous resolution.
  2. If the picture does not return, press Escape.
  3. If the display remains blank, start the Mac in Safe Mode and select the display’s Default resolution. Follow Apple’s resolution and recovery instructions for the applicable Mac.

If you are choosing a replacement ultrawide

Compare monitors at the physical size and viewing distance you intend to use. Look at native resolution and pixel density, the scaling options macOS offers, compatibility with your Mac, and the bandwidth required by the cable or adapter. If possible, assess both text sharpness and comfortable interface size in the modes you would actually use. The available guidance does not establish a universal pixel-density cutoff or a single best ultrawide for Macs.
