The 2026 Mac Studio with M5 Max makes its strongest case with faster storage, higher CPU and GPU results in Macworld’s tests, and support for up to five external displays. Those gains come at a configuration-dependent cost: Macworld’s $2,499 U.S. starting price is for a 36GB/512GB model, while its review unit was a 128GB/4TB configuration priced at $6,899. What Macworld tested—and what it costs
The distinction between the entry model and the review machine matters when judging both performance and value. Macworld tested an upgraded M5 Max with an 18-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 128GB of unified memory, and a 4TB SSD. Its reported $6,899 U.S. price applies to that configuration, not to the $2,499 starting model.
Apple’s listed M5 Max starting configuration has an 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 36GB of unified memory, and a 512GB SSD. Apple lists higher memory and storage options, as well as a 40-core GPU upgrade. The different GPU configurations are especially important when interpreting the review’s results: its tested 40-core model is not the base 32-core model. Macworld reported a U.S. starting price of $2,499, $500 above the previous M4 Max Mac Studio’s starting price. These are prices cited in a review published September 21, 2026, not a guarantee of current pricing or availability in every region. A keyboard, mouse, and display are sold separately, so the computer’s price is not the cost of a complete desk setup.

How much faster is the M5 Max?
Macworld’s results show gains over the M4 Max that vary by test, rather than one universal speed increase. The CPU figures compare the reviewed M5 Max system with M4 Max; the GPU figures below name their benchmark and comparison chip.

These are results from Roman Loyola’s Macworld review, not independently reproduced measurements. The review tested the 40-core GPU configuration, so its GPU findings should not be read as results for the base 32-core model or as a promise of the same gains in a different application. For a purchase decision, performance in the software and projects you actually use matters more than a single headline percentage.

Why storage is the standout change
Loyola identifies SSD speed as the most notable change, saying the improvement first introduced with the M5 MacBook Pro has reached Apple’s top Mac. The accessible review information does not give a numerical disk-test result, so there is no substantiated transfer rate to compare here.
Faster storage is most relevant when a workflow regularly reads or writes large projects, moves media, or works with files that put pressure on storage throughput. It does not, by itself, establish how much faster every creative task will feel; software, project size, memory use, and the rest of the workflow all matter. Choose internal capacity for the files and applications you need available locally, rather than treating the reviewer’s 4TB configuration as a required specification.

Which configuration should you consider?
Apple lists these M5 Max options. Memory and storage are configured at purchase; Macworld warns that the memory is not user-upgradeable, so estimate your workload’s needs before ordering.

For memory-intensive work, decide on memory before purchase rather than assuming you can add more later. Likewise, compare the cost of larger internal storage with your actual need for local capacity. An external Thunderbolt 5 storage setup is a possible route for expansion, but the review did not test a particular drive or enclosure.

What displays and connections does it support?
The M5 Max can drive up to five external displays, but the maximum count depends on the resolution and refresh-rate mix. Check Apple’s limits against each display, its cable, and the port arrangement you plan to use before buying.
- Five-display arrangement: up to four displays at 6K/60Hz or 4K/165Hz, plus an HDMI display up to 5K/60Hz.
- Three-display arrangement: up to two displays at 8K/60Hz, 5K/120Hz, or 4K/240Hz, plus an HDMI display up to 5K/60Hz.
Apple lists four rear Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, 10Gb Ethernet, a 3.5mm headphone jack, two front USB-C ports on M5 Max, and an SDXC UHS-II card slot. Should you upgrade or buy an older Mac Studio?
The M5 Max is most compelling when the work you do can use its faster storage, CPU/GPU throughput, or expanded high-resolution display support. It is also a relevant comparison for someone buying a new Mac Studio and weighing current hardware against older stock. The review does not establish a universal upgrade threshold for existing owners: compare the cost of the configuration you need with the improvement your own applications and projects would deliver.
