It isn’t a simple “Mac Studio is upgradeable, Mac mini is soldered” split. Apple’s service procedures document removable SSD modules in Mac Studio models with M5 Max or M5 Ultra chips and in the 2024 Mac mini with M4 or M4 Pro. The procedures differ in disassembly and module configuration, and a replacement requires restoring the computer with a separate Mac. These documents do not establish the SSD design of newer Mac mini models.
Which Mac Studio and Mac mini models have documented removable SSD modules?
Apple’s service procedure for Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra describes removing and replacing SSD modules. Apple’s separate procedure for the 2024 Mac mini with M4 or M4 Pro also covers an SSD module replacement. In both cases, “removable” describes a service procedure; it does not by itself establish that a higher-capacity upgrade is straightforward or officially supported.
