Deleting a Mac app does not necessarily delete the documents and other files it created. To check for leftovers, quit the app, look for its developer’s uninstaller, and inspect the eight user-Library locations below—but treat them as places to investigate, not a promise that every app leaves files in all eight. Apple recommends checking for an uninstaller when removing a non-Apple app and notes that app-created files may remain after the app is deleted. Apple’s uninstall guidance is the safest starting point.

How to check for Mac app leftovers safely

  1. Quit the app. Apple advises quitting an open app before uninstalling it.
  2. Check for the developer’s uninstaller. Use it when available, particularly if the app installed helpers or other components. Manually removing a folder may not remove every component.
  3. Uninstall the app using the method that matches its installation. Follow Apple’s current guidance and the developer’s instructions.
  4. Inspect likely leftover locations. Search for the app’s exact name and, if known, its developer or bundle identifier. Treat matching names as clues, not proof that a file belongs to the app.
  5. Review before deleting. Keep documents, projects, databases, and anything whose purpose is unclear. Back up important or uncertain files before making changes.

The paths below begin with ~, meaning your current user’s home folder. They are examples, not a complete inventory: apps may store files elsewhere, and sandboxing can change the standard location. Apple recommends resolving standard directories through system APIs rather than assuming every app uses the same hard-coded path. See its file-system guidance and sandbox documentation.

Eight Library locations worth inspecting

1. Application Support

~/Library/Application Support/ can contain app data and support files. Depending on the app, this may include databases, libraries, templates, projects, or downloads—material you may want to keep. Apple documents this location for app-created data and support files; sandboxed apps use their sandbox directory instead of the ordinary user-level location in applicable cases. Apple’s directory guidance explains the distinction.

2. Caches

~/Library/Caches/ is the clearest place to look for data intended to be recreated. Apple says apps should not depend on cache files being present. If you identify an app-specific cache, deleting it may free space temporarily, but the app may rebuild it when used again. Avoid removing a directory based only on a vague or partial name match. Apple’s description of cache storage covers its intended role.

3. Containers

~/Library/Containers/ can hold a sandboxed app’s container. A container may include app data and documents, so it is not automatically disposable just because it is hidden from routine Finder browsing. Apple describes the system-created container location in its macOS app sandbox documentation.

4. Group Containers

~/Library/Group Containers/ can hold app-group directories shared by related apps or components. A group directory may include Application Support, Caches, and Preferences subdirectories. Before removing anything, check whether another installed app may use the same shared data. Apple explains app groups and their shared-container behavior in its app-group documentation.

5. Preferences

~/Library/Preferences/ stores app settings. A preference file is not the app itself: removing a clearly identified one may reset settings, while an unfamiliar file should be left alone until its purpose is clear. Apple lists Preferences as a standard Library subdirectory; the eight-location checklist also includes it. Apple’s Library directory reference describes the directory.

6. Saved Application State

~/Library/Saved Application State/ is another location some cleanup guides suggest checking. The available Apple documentation does not establish that every app uses it or prescribe a universal cleanup procedure. Inspect only items you can confidently associate with the app; deleting something here is not a required step in uninstalling it.

7. Logs

~/Library/Logs/ may contain diagnostic logs. Apple describes Logs as holding log files for Console and specific system services. A log’s presence does not, by itself, mean that it is safe or necessary to remove. Apple’s Library reference describes the folder’s general purpose.

8. HTTPStorages

~/Library/HTTPStorages/ appears in some third-party leftover-file checklists. The Apple documentation cited here does not establish the folder’s current contents or give a cleanup recommendation, so treat it only as a possible inspection location. Do not delete its contents wholesale.

What the eight locations can—and cannot—tell you

The list is a practical checklist, not an official Apple inventory of files left by every deleted app. Where an app stores data depends on its design, installation, sandboxing, and the data it created. Some apps leave no obvious item in a particular location; others may store files outside these eight paths, including in a system-wide Library or another domain. Apple’s documentation on sandbox paths and standard directories describes why one fixed path list cannot cover every app.

Use the folder’s role to guide your decision, not as a substitute for identifying the file. Application Support, containers, and shared group containers may hold useful or shared data; caches are designed to be recreatable; preferences hold settings; logs are diagnostic. If you cannot confidently identify an item, preserve it rather than deleting it just because its name resembles the app.

When to leave a leftover file alone

  • It contains a project, document, database, library, download, or other material you may want later.
  • It is in a Group Containers directory and another installed app or component could use it.
  • You cannot verify the file’s owner or purpose from its name and location.
  • You are relying on manual deletion to remove a helper or other component; use the developer’s uninstaller or instructions instead.
