No: YouTube’s published live encoder guidance does not specify -14 LUFS as a requirement or target for livestreams. Treat -14 LUFS as a commonly repeated production reference, not an official YouTube Live standard. For a consistent broadcast, balance your sources, monitor the actual stream, and test the complete setup before going live.
What YouTube’s live guidance says about audio
YouTube’s encoder documentation specifies audio encoding options, not an integrated loudness target. The guidance reviewed lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS streams, with 5.1 audio supported only for AAC. It recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, and lists 128 kbps for stereo or 384 kbps for 5.1 surround sound. These are encoder settings, not LUFS requirements; check YouTube’s current settings before an event because its guidance can change. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
The same guidance recommends testing before a stream. YouTube’s live-streaming tips also advise monitoring stream quality during the event. YouTube live streaming tips and Streaming tips.
What LUFS tells you—and what it does not
LUFS describes perceived loudness. Integrated loudness measures a program over its duration, while a peak meter shows the highest signal level. They answer different questions: a mix can have controlled peaks but still vary in perceived loudness.

For a finished file, loudness normalization can measure integrated loudness and adjust the file toward a chosen target. Live content is different: speech, music, guests, and other sources change as the program unfolds. The Audio Engineering Society explains that real-time loudness processes cannot predict the rest of a live program or know the creator’s intended dynamics. A compressor, limiter, or preset can help control variation, but it cannot guarantee a fixed integrated loudness for a changing event. Audio Engineering Society: Loudness Normalization.
AES TD1008 discusses loudness recommendations for internet streaming and on-demand distribution; it is not a YouTube-specific live requirement. AES TD1008 v3.13.

How to manage audio for a YouTube livestream
- Balance your sources. Set speech, music, and other inputs so they work together. Do not assume one target number will suit every program or moment.
- Use suitable metering. A loudness meter can help track levels when repeatability matters. Also watch peaks and listen for clipping, pumping, or abrupt changes.
- Test the full stream path. Send a test with audio and activity similar to the actual event, then listen to the live preview. YouTube’s guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Monitor during the event. Keep an eye on stream health and listen for problems as sources change. A real-time processor can assist, but it cannot anticipate what will happen next.
Manual mixing and real-time processing compared
| Approach | Control and dynamics | Consistency as sources change | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual mixing | Lets an operator respond to the program and preserve intended dynamics. | Depends on monitoring and timely adjustments. | Source changes can be missed if the operator is distracted. |
| Real-time processing | Can automatically control level variation. | May help manage changing inputs, but cannot predict future content. | Listen for pumping or sudden gain changes; verify measurements and test through the actual stream path. |
Neither approach guarantees a fixed integrated loudness throughout a live event. AES advises using real-time processes with care because they cannot know the artist’s intent or predict the remainder of a program.
Does YouTube normalize live audio to -14 LUFS?
The YouTube live encoder documentation reviewed for this article does not state a -14 LUFS live target or describe a live normalization algorithm. The platform behavior in that respect is unresolved by the sources cited here, so do not treat upload or playback claims as proof of a live ingest requirement.

YouTube’s Stable volume is a viewer playback feature, not an encoder setting. YouTube says it is on by default, is not available for every video, and can be toggled in supported interfaces. YouTube Help: Control video volume on your device.

Does YouTube Live require -14 LUFS?
No -14 LUFS requirement appears in the YouTube live encoder guidance reviewed here. Do not present it as an official live standard.

What LUFS should I target for a YouTube livestream?
The cited YouTube guidance does not give a LUFS target. Choose a production approach appropriate to your program, balance sources, and test and monitor the complete stream.
How do I measure loudness while streaming?
Use a loudness meter if you need repeatable loudness tracking, alongside peak metering and listening. Test it through the actual stream route; integrated loudness for a completed program and real-time management of a changing live event are not the same workflow.

Does a limiter guarantee consistent live loudness?
No. A limiter can control peaks, but no real-time processor can predict future content or guarantee a fixed integrated loudness across a variable live program.
