LPTK is a Linux desktop password generator that can recreate a site password from the same inputs instead of retrieving it from a conventional password vault. Its default mode is described as offline and non-storing: you provide the information used to generate a password, and repeating those inputs is intended to produce the same result. That means convenience depends on remembering the master password and keeping each account’s relevant details and generation choices consistent.

What is LPTK?

LPTK is a LessPass-compatible password-generation application for Linux, written in Rust and built with GTK. The GNOME community introduced it in March 2025 as a stateless password manager. Its package description characterizes the approach as “same input, same output.” This Week in GNOME’s announcement quotes maintainer Óscar García describing the default tool as offline and generating passwords from what the user enters.

“Stateless” distinguishes this workflow from a conventional vault: in its default mode, LPTK is described as not storing your generated passwords or other information. It generates a password from inputs such as a master password and site or account details. This is not the same as retrieving a saved, encrypted password record.

How does LPTK generate the same password again?

To reproduce a password, use the same master password and the same account-specific inputs and options that were used previously. If an input or generation setting changes, the output may change too. The available product descriptions establish this repeatable-input behavior, but do not specify the exact cryptographic algorithm or a full account of how every input is processed.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

This makes the method different from a vault’s saved records. A vault is designed to retain credentials so they can be retrieved after unlocking it; LPTK’s stateless default is designed to regenerate a password when its required inputs are supplied again. The trade-off is that you must be able to reproduce those inputs and choices.

Does LPTK store your passwords?

In its described default mode, no: LPTK is intended to work offline and store no information. An optional compatible profile server changes that workflow by retaining site names, login names, and password-generation options, which can reduce the need to remember settings. Rockpass is named as an example of a compatible server. It is a separate optional component, not a requirement for default use; the security of a particular server depends on its deployment, and the available descriptions do not establish the security properties of any specific server.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Can you use LPTK offline?

Yes, according to the project description: the default mode is completely offline, so it does not require an account, network connection, or synchronization service to generate passwords. Profile storage through an optional server is a separate choice.

What happens if you forget the master password or account settings?

If you cannot reproduce the inputs needed for an account, LPTK’s stateless approach does not provide a saved password record to retrieve in their place. Forgetting or changing the master password, account details, or relevant generation options can therefore prevent you from recreating the same output. Keep a secure, deliberate record of the non-secret settings you need to reproduce; do not put the master password or generated credentials in an unprotected note.

LPTK versus a conventional password vault

Question LPTK default mode Conventional vault
How do you get a password? Regenerate it from the required inputs; the same inputs are intended to produce the same output. Retrieve a saved credential from an encrypted record after unlocking the vault.
What must you keep reproducible? The master password, account details, and generation options relevant to that password. The vault’s master credential and access to the vault; per-account passwords are stored as records.
Does it work offline? Described as offline by default. Varies by product and configuration.
How are profiles synchronized? Default mode does not sync; an optional compatible server can retain profile details and options. Varies by product; synchronization and recovery arrangements differ.
What if access inputs are lost? Without the inputs needed to regenerate a password, there is no default stored record to retrieve. Depends on the product’s recovery arrangements; recovery can introduce access trade-offs.
What security documentation should you look for? The available descriptions do not establish a precise algorithm, formal threat model, or independent audit status. Check how the provider protects encrypted records, whether it can access the decryption key, and what recovery entails.

The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s password manager buyer’s guide discusses encryption at rest and the importance of a provider not having the decryption key for vault-based managers. Those criteria help evaluate vault products, but should not be used to describe LPTK’s stateless default as an encrypted vault.

Security considerations

LPTK’s offline, non-storing default may appeal if you want password generation without keeping a password database or relying on a sync service. It also leaves you responsible for being able to reproduce the inputs and settings. The available descriptions do not establish LPTK’s precise cryptographic algorithm, formal threat model, current upstream release, or independent audit status; no conclusion about those matters should be inferred from the app’s language or implementation technology alone.

NIST’s SP 800-63 FAQ says password managers can improve security and convenience. Its general guidance recommends unique passwords, a long master passphrase, and multifactor authentication where supported. This is password-hygiene guidance, not an audit or endorsement of LPTK. A profile server also has its own configuration and security considerations, distinct from the offline client.

Linux availability

LPTK is designed for GNOME and is also described as usable in other Linux desktop environments. Search-result material lists Flatpak and distribution packaging, but the sources available here do not confirm a current official Flathub listing, the maintainer’s release page, or a complete supported-distribution list. ALT Linux package metadata records version 0.9.0 for Sisyphus, updated October 27, 2025; that package entry is not evidence that 0.9.0 is the latest upstream release.
