The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III is the strongest starting point for low-light video among these pocket cameras because its 24–100mm-equivalent zoom opens to f/1.8 at the wide end and f/2.8 at the long end. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VII reaches twice as far, but its 24–200mm-equivalent f/2.8–4.5 lens gives up light, particularly when zoomed in. Neither is a promise of clean footage in near-dark conditions: both use a 1-inch sensor, and lens brightness, focus, stabilization, and shooting distance all affect the result.
Which compact camera is better for low-light video?
Choose the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III if your priority is filming in dim light with a fixed-lens pocket camera. Its brighter zoom gives it an advantage over the Sony RX100 VII when the two are used at comparable framing. The Sony makes more sense when distant subjects and tracking are more important than maximum light gathering.
This is a practical comparison, not a controlled low-light video ranking across every model. Reviews document relevant specifications and behavior, but do not provide comparable measurements for all the cameras below. The Panasonic ZS300/TZ300, Sony ZV-1, and Panasonic LX10 are alternatives with specific strengths, not established low-light video winners.

|---|---|---|
| Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III | 1-inch sensor; 24–100mm-equivalent f/1.8–2.8 zoom; 4K/30p recording. | Brightest general-purpose lens among the principal models compared here, but review coverage identifies autofocus and stabilization limitations. DPReview also found the lens soft at wide angle. DPReview review; Digital Camera World. |
| Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VII | 24–200mm-equivalent reach, 4K video, subject tracking, and additional stabilization options for 4K and Full HD. | Its f/2.8–4.5 lens is slower than the Canon’s, and DPReview notes that the maximum aperture limits dim-light use. DPReview review; DPReview comparison. |
| Panasonic Lumix ZS300 / TZ300 | A newer long-zoom compact discussed in 2026 coverage, for travelers who prioritize reach. | The available coverage emphasizes versatility rather than a direct low-light video test, so its low-light performance is not established as better than the brighter-lens choices. Digital Camera World. |
| Sony ZV-1 | A compact vlogging alternative; RTINGS’ comparison finds more effective autofocus than the G7 X Mark III. | The available comparison does not establish a direct low-light video winner. Confirm the exact version and current availability before buying. RTINGS. |
| Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX10 | Its f/1.4 wide-angle maximum aperture is faster than the G7 X Mark III’s at the wide end. | The comparison review flags autofocus hunting in video; check current availability. DPReview. |
Why lens aperture matters more than zoom range in dim scenes
The f-number describes the lens aperture: a lower maximum f-number means the lens can open wider and admit more light. A compact zoom’s maximum aperture often gets smaller as you zoom toward telephoto, so compare the aperture at the framing you expect to use—not just the wide-angle specification.

You can also use different quantities, brightness level and color temperature combinations according to your requirements to achieve professional shooting needs.
The G7 X Mark III is specified at f/1.8–2.8 across its 24–100mm-equivalent zoom. The RX100 VII is f/2.8–4.5 across its 24–200mm-equivalent zoom. The Sony’s extra reach is useful for distant subjects, but its aperture is less favorable in low light, especially at the long end. Canon specifications; Sony specifications.
A wider aperture can help, but it does not guarantee noise-free footage. Sensor size, exposure, processing, and how dark the scene is also matter. The reviews note noise and video limitations for the Canon, while Sony’s review warns that the RX100 VII’s lens aperture constrains dim-light use. A 1-inch-sensor compact has limits in genuinely dark interiors. DPReview; DPReview; RTINGS.

What to check beyond the “4K” label
Resolution alone does not tell you how a camera will look or behave while recording. DPReview’s comparison describes differences in video sampling and detail: the RX100 VII’s 4K video is oversampled and uses a 1.08× crop, while the compared Canon models produce less detailed sampling. Check the camera’s exact frame rate, crop, focus behavior, and stabilization mode for your shooting style. DPReview comparison.
Autofocus for people and moving subjects
If you film people who move through the frame, face and eye tracking can matter as much as aperture. The RX100 VII has advanced subject tracking. Reviews identify the G7 X Mark III’s video autofocus as a limitation; RTINGS also compares its autofocus unfavorably with the Sony ZV-1. For a static scene, that weakness may matter less than the Canon’s brighter lens. RX100 VII review; G7 X Mark III review; RTINGS comparison.

Stabilization for handheld footage
Stabilization can reduce handheld shake, but electronic stabilization may crop the image or affect quality. The RX100 VII review describes additional stabilization options for 4K and Full HD. DPReview cautions about the G7 X Mark III’s high stabilization setting, so test the exact mode you intend to use rather than assuming that the strongest setting is always best. Choose the Canon G7 X Mark III for a brighter pocket zoom
It is the more sensible starting point when low-light capability takes priority over long reach. Its f/1.8–2.8 lens is the key advantage, with 4K/30p recording and a 1-inch sensor. Accept the documented video autofocus and stabilization caveats, and do not expect it to make a near-dark scene look bright and clean.

Choose the Sony RX100 VII for reach and tracking
Its 24–200mm-equivalent range and subject tracking suit distant or moving subjects. That versatility comes with a slower f/2.8–4.5 lens, which works against it when light is scarce. It is the reach-first choice, not the brighter low-light choice.

Consider the Panasonic ZS300/TZ300 when reach is the priority

Use another setup for very dark interiors
If clean footage in a very dark room is essential, consider a larger-sensor interchangeable-lens camera with a bright lens, or add continuous lighting. The compact-camera reviews establish limitations around noise and maximum aperture, but do not provide a controlled comparison against larger-sensor systems.
Check the filming workflow before buying
Specifications alone may not settle whether a compact fits your setup. Verify these details for the exact model and regional configuration:
Quick Recap
- Focal length and aperture: Confirm the maximum aperture at the focal length you will actually use.
- Recording mode: Check frame rate, crop, and how much detail the camera retains in the selected 4K or Full HD mode.
- Focus: Look for face or eye tracking if you film people who move; test focus behavior in the conditions you expect.
- Stabilization: Confirm which modes are available at your chosen resolution and whether electronic stabilization crops the frame.
- Audio and handling: Check microphone input, screen articulation, recording limits, and battery behavior for your workflow. The cited reviews do not establish every current regional configuration.
