A cloud setup lets you turn off your own computer after setup, while a local setup gives you more direct control but depends on your computer, power, and internet connection. Neither looping nor reconnect settings can guarantee zero downtime, so test the feed, monitor stream health, and plan how to recover.
Choose where to run the encoder
YouTube receives a live encoder feed. Your choice of encoder determines which parts of the setup must stay available and who handles failures. Confirm current product capabilities, costs, and service commitments with the vendor before choosing a specific service or device; the sources cited here do not establish comparable prices or uptime guarantees.

YouTube’s encoder directory lists software, services, and hardware options. It describes AJA HELO Plus as supporting scheduled prerecorded media through PlayToStream; check the manufacturer’s current documentation before relying on that workflow.
Prepare your YouTube stream and media
- Enable live streaming if needed. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this ahead of your planned start.
- Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Set its title, description, and privacy settings, then obtain the server URL and stream key for your encoder. Treat the key as a credential and keep it private.
- Prepare your video or playlist. Check for damaged frames, missing audio, unwanted black sections, and inconsistent formats. If you use multiple files, test transitions as well as each file’s opening.
- Test the whole playlist cycle. Check playback and audio before launching the stream. A file that starts correctly does not prove that a later file or transition will work.

Start the loop and reduce interruptions
- Configure the encoder. Add the video or playlist and set it to repeat using the current controls in your chosen encoder. Exact menus vary by software, service, and device.
- Connect to YouTube. Enter the server URL and private stream key in the encoder, then start sending the feed.
- Check the incoming preview and stream health. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the intended video and audio. Check again after changing media or playlist settings.
- Set up a recovery plan. Keep replacement media ready and decide who will check the stream and restart or replace the feed if necessary.
For a local encoder, prevent the computer from sleeping, use stable power and a wired network when practical, and leave enough CPU or GPU capacity for encoding. A UPS can help keep the encoder and router powered through a brief power loss, but it cannot prevent internet, hardware, software, or platform failures.
FFmpeg documents options to reconnect in certain cases, including reconnecting when disconnected before end-of-file. These are protocol-level controls, not proof that YouTube will preserve one uninterrupted broadcast through every failure. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the options and their limits.

With a cloud encoder, upload the media, configure the playlist, connect the YouTube stream key, and start the feed from the provider’s dashboard. Once setup is complete, your own computer can be turned off, but the stream still depends on the provider’s availability and service terms. Do not assume that a service will recover within a particular time unless its current official documentation says so.
Understand YouTube’s stream lifecycle
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving rule, not a claim that longer streams are impossible. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation also describes an advanced workflow in which a 24/7 broadcast remains live while a separate broadcast is completed on the same incoming stream. This API workflow is not required for a basic creator loop.

For ordinary streams, stopping the encoder feed ends the stream. If you need an ongoing feed, plan for what happens when the encoder stops or loses its connection instead of assuming the loop itself will keep the broadcast live. Copyright can interrupt a technically healthy stream
YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube identifies third-party content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even licensed content may require the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and use only media you are authorized to stream.

FAQ
Can I run a 24/7 YouTube stream without leaving my computer on?
Yes, if a cloud service or suitable dedicated device runs the encoder and sends the feed. With local software, the computer and its power and network connection must remain available. A remote encoder removes your computer from that part of the setup, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
Does looping a video guarantee that my YouTube stream stays live?
No. The encoder, network, power, provider, YouTube, or a content-rights issue can interrupt the feed. Test the playlist, monitor stream health, and prepare a recovery plan.

Do I need YouTube’s API to loop prerecorded video?
No. A basic creator loop can send an encoder feed using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. The API documentation describes a separate advanced workflow for managing a continuous broadcast and individual broadcasts.
How long does YouTube keep a live stream as an archive?
