Choose Loki when your visual regression target is a Storybook component catalog and you want a workflow built around stories and reference images. Choose Playwright screenshots when visual assertions belong in browser journeys or page tests you already run with Playwright Test. If both are important, using each for its distinct testing target is a reasonable approach—not an official integration between the tools.
How Loki and Playwright screenshots differ
Loki describes itself as a tool for testing Storybook projects for visual regressions. Its practical unit is a Storybook story: start Storybook, create reference images, run tests, inspect differences, and approve intentional changes. The project overview lists Chrome in Docker, local Chrome, iOS simulator, and Android emulator among its supported platforms. Loki documentation
Playwright Test puts visual comparisons inside browser tests. You can assert on a page or element with await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The first execution creates a reference screenshot; subsequent runs compare the current rendering with it. Playwright screenshot assertions
Which should you choose?
Choose Loki for a Storybook component catalog
Loki is the more purpose-built fit when stories already represent the states you want to check. Its documented workflow covers updating references, testing them, reviewing generated differences, and approving changes. The getting-started guide recommends checking reference images into the repository; Git LFS is optional. Loki getting started

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Playwright for page tests and browser journeys
Use Playwright screenshot assertions when you want visual checks in the same runner as your existing browser tests. Playwright supports configurable snapshot paths and names; generated names distinguish browser and platform, or project names when using multiple projects. PNG is the default image format, and a .webp filename selects lossless WebP. Playwright screenshot assertions
Use both when the coverage targets differ
A component catalog and an end-to-end page journey answer different testing questions. It can make sense to check component states with Loki and full browser workflows with Playwright, while maintaining separate references and review paths. This is a recommendation based on their documented scopes; the projects do not document an official integration.

Keep screenshot comparisons reliable
Visual references are tied to the rendering environment. Playwright warns that output can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment; keep the CI image, browser version, viewport, fonts, and test data consistent. Playwright visual comparisons

For either workflow, control the inputs that affect rendering and review changed references rather than accepting them automatically. A threshold can manage known small differences, but it cannot make unstable test data or an unexplained baseline change safe.

Loki documents asynchronous rendering and animations as possible sources of incorrect or flaky captures. It says common network/loading cases are handled and common CSS transitions, animations, and requestAnimationFrame are disabled by default. Its documentation identifies looped requestAnimationFrame, GIF, SVG and native Lottie animations, and React Native Animated as limitations that may require disabling or skipping. Loki flaky tests
Playwright-specific variation controls
Playwright provides maxDiffPixels and a custom stylesheet option for hiding or filtering selected volatile content. Use these to handle known variation, not as a substitute for stable data, a consistent rendering environment, or deliberate review of accepted references. Playwright screenshot assertions

CI setup and investigating failures
Loki: require reference images in CI
Loki’s documented static-build pattern is:
build-storybook && loki --requireReference --reactUri file:./storybook-static
The --requireReference option makes a missing reference fail the run instead of silently treating an unreviewed image as a baseline. Check compatibility with your current Storybook, Node, browser, simulator, and CI versions before adopting the documented commands; Loki’s getting-started and CI pages display an update date of 2024-08-27. Loki CI guide
Playwright: run checks in CI and inspect the trace
Playwright documents CI setup and recommends frequent CI runs. When a visual assertion fails, use Trace Viewer to inspect test context and the expected, actual, and difference images. This helps distinguish a genuine UI change from an environment or test-data issue. Playwright CI guide Playwright Trace Viewer

Performance, evidence, and maintenance trade-offs
Neither project’s official documentation reviewed here establishes a comparative speed, accuracy, or flake-rate result. Do not choose on a presumed performance advantage: choose based on whether your important unit is a Storybook story or a page/element assertion in Playwright Test, then measure runtime and maintenance cost in your own CI environment.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Both workflows require baseline maintenance. Loki makes approval of story references and handling missing references explicit in its documentation. Playwright keeps assertions in browser tests and offers threshold/style controls and trace-based failure investigation. In either case, a baseline update is a code-review decision: confirm the visual change is intended before replacing the expected image.
