Logto can be a suitable identity platform for some customer-facing applications, but it is not automatically a drop-in replacement for Microsoft Entra External ID. First decide whether you need a primary customer identity platform or enterprise single sign-on (SSO) that delegates authentication to Entra. Then compare the exact sign-in flows, security controls, account behavior, migration work and pricing your application requires. Logto also documents connecting to Entra through OIDC or SAML, so using both may be the better fit.

Choose the identity role before comparing products

Microsoft describes Entra External ID external tenants as a customer identity and access management (CIAM) option for customer-facing apps and services. Logto documents authentication for web, mobile and desktop applications, along with machine-to-machine and device flows, OIDC/OAuth capabilities and SAML app integration. Those overlapping uses do not establish complete feature parity.

There are two different deployment questions:

  • Which platform will be the primary identity service for customers? Compare user and tenant models, sign-in methods, account recovery, security requirements, application integrations and operating responsibilities.
  • Should Logto delegate enterprise users’ sign-in to Entra? In this arrangement, Logto remains part of the application’s identity flow and Entra authenticates users for a configured customer organization. This is federation, not proof that Logto replaces Entra for every identity need.

Make a list of the actual user journeys—such as a new customer registering, an employee signing in through a company identity provider, or an existing user recovering access—and evaluate each against the intended architecture.

Microsoft defines external tenants as a CIAM solution for customer-facing applications and services. Source: Microsoft Learn, Entra External ID external-tenant documentation.
Enterprise sign-in integration Documents Microsoft Entra enterprise SSO using OIDC and SAML. Each enterprise client requires its own connector, according to Logto’s enterprise SSO documentation. Can serve as the identity provider in the documented Logto OIDC or SAML federation setups. Those setups do not establish that the products have identical capabilities.
Published pricing basis in the cited pages Logto’s billing documentation describes enterprise pricing as contract-based; applicable usage and quota terms depend on the contract or plan. Microsoft’s FAQ, accessed October 7, 2026, states that the core offering is free for the first 50,000 monthly active users (MAU); add-ons do not have a free tier. Microsoft documents monthly active user billing and optional add-ons.
Specific documented limitation Do not infer that a control is available in every hosting mode or plan without checking the applicable configuration and terms. Microsoft’s external-tenant feature comparison marks Entra ID Protection as unavailable for external tenants. Check the live feature comparison for other required controls.

These are documented points of comparison, not a full parity matrix. Microsoft’s feature comparison distinguishes workforce and external tenants, including authentication methods and controls. Verify each required feature for the tenant type and configuration you will actually deploy.

Connect Logto to Entra with OIDC

Use the OIDC route when your deployment is intended to federate sign-in through an Entra app registration. Follow Logto’s Microsoft Entra OIDC connector guide and validate the complete flow in a test environment before enabling it for customers.

  1. Start in Logto. Open the Microsoft Entra OIDC connector setup and copy the redirect URI it provides.
  2. Register the app in Microsoft Entra. In the Microsoft Entra admin center, create a web app registration and enter the redirect URI copied from Logto.
  3. Configure the connector. Provide Logto with the Entra client ID, client secret and issuer. Logto says it discovers OIDC endpoints from the issuer and includes openid, profile and email by default; add other scopes only if the use case requires them.
  4. Test the organization’s routing and sign-in. Configure the organization’s email domain if domain-based routing is intended. Logto notes that users matching a configured domain may be routed to that connector and may be limited to SSO as their sign-in method.

Keep Microsoft API access separate from sign-in

Successful Entra authentication does not by itself grant arbitrary access to Microsoft APIs. If the application needs user-authorized Microsoft API access, configure the relevant API scopes and consent, and enable token storage in Logto. Logto’s OIDC guide says offline_access is needed for refresh tokens. Decide whether this API access is needed independently of the basic sign-in integration.

Connect Logto to Entra with SAML

SAML is another documented enterprise SSO option. It involves configuring an Entra enterprise application and mapping the identity information Logto expects; enabling the protocol alone does not confirm that the intended users and claims will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set up the SAML connector in Logto. Copy its service-provider Audience URI/entity ID and Assertion Consumer Service (ACS) URL.
  2. Create and configure an enterprise application in Entra. Set up SAML, enter the Logto service-provider details and configure the required identity, email and name claims.
  3. Supply federation metadata to Logto. Use the Entra federation metadata URL in the Logto connector configuration.
  4. Configure user access. Assign the intended users or groups to the Entra enterprise application, then test with accounts from the expected population.
  5. Handle signed requests carefully if required. Logto documents optional signed-request configuration. Follow its certificate and signing sequence, and verify that Entra’s signature requirement is satisfied.

Test the actual initiated sign-in flow and the resulting claims in your tenant. Include certificate changes in the operational plan rather than assuming a successful initial setup settles future rotation.

Plan enterprise connectors, domains and account linking

For multi-customer SSO, Logto describes connectors as client-specific. Two customers using the same identity vendor still need separate connectors so their configuration, employee management and permissions remain isolated.

Domain routing and account linking can affect who is able to sign in and which account they reach. Logto’s identity documentation says a new SSO identity creates an account, while a matching working email can link to an existing account. A configured domain may also restrict users to enterprise SSO.

Inventory migration work before moving customer sign-in

Microsoft’s CIAM migration guidance recommends mapping existing features to External ID capabilities and inventorying the current implementation. Apply the same discipline when evaluating a move to Logto or a mixed Logto–Entra design: the available documentation does not establish a turnkey migration path for existing accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record what the current system actually uses

  • User identifiers, profile data and the rules that connect a person to an account.
  • Password or other credential handling, identity providers, MFA and account recovery methods.
  • Application registrations, redirect URIs, sign-in flows and tenant settings.
  • Token claims, API scopes, consent and any stored third-party tokens.
  • Customer-specific SSO configuration, domain routing, group or application assignment, and account-linking behavior.

Design the cutover and recovery path

For each application and user group, specify how sign-in traffic will move, how users will authenticate after the change, and how the team will detect and recover from problems. Test representative new-user, returning-user, SSO, recovery and API-access flows before production cutover. Decide in advance what rollback means for the application, identity configuration and user data; the cited migration guidance does not provide a Logto-specific automated migration procedure.

Compare the controls your application requires

Do not treat a general identity-platform label as a security feature checklist. Make a requirement-by-requirement comparison for the selected tenant, plan and hosting arrangement. For Entra external tenants, Microsoft’s feature comparison specifically lists Entra ID Protection as unavailable; that limitation does not, by itself, establish that every other security requirement is missing.

  • List required sign-in methods, federation protocols and MFA behavior.
  • Check which token claims, API permissions and machine-to-machine flows applications need.
  • Confirm that controls for account recovery, customer administration, governance and monitoring are available in the configuration you plan to use.
  • Verify how each system handles customer separation, enterprise assignments and account linking.
  • Test operational ownership: who manages connectors, credentials, certificates, consent and incident recovery?

Estimate total cost for your own usage

Microsoft’s External ID FAQ, accessed October 7, 2026, states that the core offering is free for the first 50,000 MAU. Microsoft also says add-ons do not have a free tier, documents monthly active user billing and optional premium add-ons, and requires an Azure subscription for billing. Treat the 50,000-MAU figure as Microsoft’s published core-offering threshold, not as a promise that every required capability is free.

Logto’s billing documentation describes enterprise pricing as contract-based; self-service additions and usage beyond contracted quota are subject to applicable Pro-plan or contract terms. The cited information does not establish a comparable Logto contract rate or a universal lower-cost choice.
