Logseq is an open-source knowledge-management platform built around graphs of notes, with a focus on local data and privacy. Its current product split matters: Logseq OG is the file-based Markdown route, while the newer Logseq database-graph route is in beta and is being developed for synchronization and collaboration. If you are deciding whether to use it, choose based on the storage workflow you need—and back up database graphs before relying on them.
What Logseq is—and why there are two versions
Logseq describes itself as a privacy-first, open-source knowledge base. Its homepage highlights local data ownership, Markdown interoperability, mobile apps, plugins, themes, and beta Sync; it also says personal use is free. These are Logseq’s product statements, and availability or pricing can change. Logseq homepage.
On April 24, 2026, Logseq announced a distinction between two product paths: Logseq OG, for file-based Markdown graphs, and Logseq, for database graphs. The announcement positions the database path as the basis for enhanced graph synchronization, collaboration, and performance. Logseq’s product-split announcement.
That split affects portability and workflow expectations. Logseq’s homepage says, “You own your data locally forever,” and says notes are Markdown files that can be opened in other tools. Treat those claims as applying to the file-based Markdown workflow rather than assuming every database-graph workflow behaves identically. Logseq homepage.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which Logseq path fits your workflow?
| Path | Storage model | Best reason to consider it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Logseq OG | File-based Markdown graphs | You want a local text-file workflow and the option to open notes in other tools. | Check the current OG release and migration instructions before switching; detailed export or migration guarantees are not established by the product announcement. |
| Logseq database graphs | Database graphs | You want to try the developing synchronization and collaboration direction. | The repository describes DB as beta and warns that data loss is possible; the new mobile app and real-time collaboration (RTC) are described as alpha. |
The distinctions and maturity labels come from Logseq’s April 24, 2026 announcement and repository README. Product-split announcement · Logseq repository README.
How to think about privacy and portability
Logseq’s privacy-first positioning and local-data statement are useful signals, but they do not by themselves answer every question about a particular setup. The file-based OG path is the clear fit if your priority is working with Markdown files directly. The database product is a distinct storage path, so do not assume OG’s Markdown portability claims describe database graphs or their export behavior.

Syncing across devices and collaborating
Logseq presents Sync as beta on its homepage. The repository describes a new RTC approach for syncing database graphs across devices or collaborating, but labels RTC and the new mobile app alpha. Those labels mean you should confirm current access, supported devices, and feature availability rather than assume that a stable, universally available real-time workflow is included.

Back up database graphs before relying on them
Logseq’s repository warns that data loss is possible while the database version is in beta and recommends automated backups or regular SQLite database backups. Make the backup routine part of your trial, not an afterthought.

Is Logseq a good fit?
Logseq is most compelling if its graph-based knowledge workflow and local-data orientation match how you want to keep notes. Choose OG when direct Markdown-file handling is central; consider the database path when its developing sync and collaboration capabilities are the reason you are trying Logseq, with backups in place. For a comparison with another knowledge tool, assess storage and export portability, sync and collaboration maturity, supported devices, privacy model, extensibility, and total cost—then verify details against each product’s current documentation.
