To lock an exchange rate for multi-currency billing, first decide what you need to keep stable: the amount charged to the customer, the amount your business receives in its home currency, or a quoted conversion rate for a limited time. These are different policies, and none automatically guarantees all three. A customer’s presentment currency is the currency shown and charged at checkout; the merchant’s settlement currency is the currency paid out to the merchant. If they differ, the payment provider may convert the funds, while the customer’s bank may separately apply its own foreign-exchange fee.

For Stripe, the documented choices include manually setting currency-specific prices, dynamically converting prices into local currencies, or using the FX Quotes API to lock a rate for a limited period. Stripe also offers Adaptive Pricing, a separate conversion approach with its own fees and recurring-billing behavior. Choose based on who should bear currency movement and conversion costs—not just on whether a checkout page displays a local currency.

What does locking an exchange rate mean?

In billing, “locking” can describe three distinct arrangements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A time-limited quote: A conversion rate is held for a defined window so a customer can pay against a quoted amount. Stripe says its FX Quotes API can lock a rate for up to 24 hours; that is the stated maximum, not a promise that every payment flow or quote remains valid for that long. Stripe’s pricing page displays this information, with prices localized by merchant location.
  • A static local-currency price: The merchant chooses a price in each currency, such as a separate amount in euros and pounds. The customer-facing amount can remain unchanged until the merchant edits it, but the merchant’s home-currency proceeds can rise or fall as exchange rates move.
  • A processor-managed conversion guarantee: The provider converts a price and manages the exchange-rate treatment under a specific product’s terms. That guarantee may cover settlement or a particular transaction without fixing local-currency prices across future subscription renewals.

These policies should not be treated as interchangeable. A fixed price in the customer’s currency protects the customer from FX-driven price changes, but leaves the merchant exposed to shifts in the home-currency value of that revenue. A conversion guarantee may make the merchant’s settlement more predictable for a transaction while the customer-facing amount still varies between billing periods.

Which currency is being held stable?

Separate three currencies in your billing flow before setting a policy:

  • Payment-method currency: The currency a card or other payment method supports for the transaction.
  • Presentment currency: The currency in which the customer sees and is charged the price.
  • Settlement currency: The currency in which the merchant receives a payout.

They may be the same, but they do not have to be. When charge and settlement currencies differ, a payment provider may convert the transaction. A customer’s bank can also independently charge an FX fee. Stripe’s currency documentation explains supported charge currencies and currency handling; it says charges can be processed in over 135 currencies, though the available currencies and conversion behavior depend on the account and payment flow. See Stripe’s currency documentation.

How do the main billing approaches compare?

Stripe’s localization guidance distinguishes manual prices, dynamic local conversion, and rate locking. Adaptive Pricing is a separate option described in Stripe Support. Their effects differ across customer price stability, merchant FX exposure, fees, and renewals.

Manual currency-specific prices Stable in a given currency until the merchant changes that price. The merchant’s home-currency proceeds can move with exchange rates unless prices are revised. Not stated as a fixed rate or quote window in Stripe’s localization overview. Requires the merchant to maintain and periodically review separate currency prices. Stripe localization overview.
Dynamic local conversion Local-currency amounts can change as exchange rates change. Depends on the provider’s conversion and settlement terms; a local display alone does not establish a fixed home-currency payout. Not stated as a fixed rate or quote window in Stripe’s localization overview. For subscriptions, confirm whether each billing period recalculates the local amount before promising a stable renewal price.
FX Quotes API rate lock A rate is locked for a quote window, not necessarily for future subscription cycles. Depends on the quote and settlement terms for the specific integration. Stripe’s pricing page states up to 24 hours. It also lists a transaction fee and an additional rate-locking fee; the displayed pricing is localized and should be checked for the merchant’s country and account. Stripe pricing. Integration teams need to define quote expiry and what happens if payment is not completed in time. Exact API lifecycle and retry semantics are not established by the overview.
Adaptive Pricing Stripe says the rate is guaranteed through settlement for the relevant transaction; this does not by itself guarantee one local-currency amount for every subscription renewal. Subject to Stripe’s product terms and the conversion arrangement. Stripe Support states that a 2–4% conversion fee is charged to the customer. Confirm current eligibility, fees, and terms in the relevant account and region. Stripe Adaptive Pricing support. Stripe says subscription local prices can vary by billing cycle; its support guidance also says failed-payment retries may use a later rate. Stripe subscription support.

How do I choose between local pricing and conversion?

Choose manual local prices when the customer amount should be predictable

Set a separate amount in each currency when your priority is a consistent displayed price, for example, €20 for customers billed in euros regardless of short-term FX movement. The trade-off is that the home-currency value of those receipts changes unless you update the prices. Set a review cadence and decide who approves changes; otherwise, a price that once matched your target margin can drift away from it.

Choose dynamic conversion when you accept a changing local amount

Dynamic conversion can reduce the work of maintaining a price in every currency, but customers may see different local amounts as rates move. Be explicit about whether the converted amount is recalculated at each checkout or billing cycle. Do not describe a conversion rate guaranteed through settlement as a promise that a subscriber’s local price will stay fixed over time.

Choose a rate-locked quote when payment follows a quote

A time-limited quote is useful when a customer needs a known conversion rate before completing a purchase. Tell the customer the quote currency, amount, timestamp, and expiry, and make the outcome of an expired quote clear before payment. Stripe’s pricing page states a maximum lock duration of up to 24 hours for the FX Quotes API, but the exact validity and handling for a particular integration must come from the applicable API documentation and account terms.

Evaluate Adaptive Pricing as its own product policy

Stripe Support describes Adaptive Pricing as using Stripe-provided exchange rates, charging the customer a 2–4% conversion fee, and guaranteeing the rate through settlement. Those are vendor support statements, not a general rule for other processors. Verify current availability and account-specific terms before relying on them. Stripe Support also reports an average 17.8% international revenue increase, but the cited page does not state a study year or methodology; treat it as a vendor-reported claim, not an independently verified forecast for your business. What should a billing policy specify?

Before implementing currency conversion, document the customer promise and the corresponding payment behavior. For any quote or conversion, specify:

  • The currency used for the quote and the currency the customer will be charged.
  • The exchange-rate source and the time at which the rate is set.
  • The quote’s expiry and what the customer must do if it expires before payment.
  • How amounts are rounded and how fees are shown or assigned.
  • Whether refunds use the original transaction’s rate or another rate, and how failed-payment retries are priced.
  • For subscriptions, whether each renewal is a fixed amount in the customer’s currency or a fresh conversion from the integration currency.

Match the contract, checkout wording, invoice, and actual processor behavior. Stripe says Adaptive Pricing refunds use the transaction’s rate, while its subscription guidance says a failed-payment retry can use a later rate. These details apply to those Stripe flows and should not be assumed for other payment providers. Adaptive Pricing support; subscription support.

What changes for subscriptions?

A stable first charge does not necessarily mean stable renewals. Stripe Support states that Adaptive Pricing for subscriptions uses real-time exchange rates for each billing cycle, so the local price can vary as rates fluctuate. Stripe describes a stability-buffer option as gated; check eligibility and terms rather than assuming it is available to every account. Explain how renewal prices can change and how customers will be notified before they subscribe.

Currency can also become constrained after billing objects are created. Stripe says active subscriptions and other billing objects can lock a customer to a currency; changing a subscription’s currency may require canceling and recreating the subscription. Check the customer’s currency and the effect on existing billing records before changing an established plan. Stripe guidance on customer currency locks; Stripe guidance on invoice and customer currency.

How should the implementation handle amounts and expiry?

Do not assume every currency uses two decimal places. Stripe’s currency documentation says API amounts use the currency’s minor unit and notes exceptions such as zero-decimal currencies. Use currency-aware conversion and formatting, including the currency’s minor-unit rules, for calculations and display. Stripe currency documentation.

For a rate-locked implementation, define the quote lifecycle in your own system: record the quote currency, rate source, timestamp, expiry, rounded amount, and fee treatment; then make the customer-facing behavior consistent with those values. The Stripe localization overview confirms that FX Quotes API rate locking exists, but it does not establish the exact endpoint lifecycle, settlement behavior, expiry handling, or retry semantics. Use the current endpoint reference and account-specific terms for those implementation details rather than inferring them from the stated maximum duration.

What is the safest promise to make customers?

Promise only the amount your billing setup actually controls. If you set a fixed local price, say that the customer’s price in that currency stays fixed until you change the price, and explain how changes are communicated. If the amount is dynamically converted, disclose that the local amount can vary with exchange rates. If a quote has a validity window, show its expiry and explain what happens afterward. For subscriptions, state separately whether the local renewal amount is fixed or recalculated each cycle.
