You can record security-camera footage without paying for a cloud-storage plan, but “local storage” does not necessarily mean the camera works fully offline or sends no data to a vendor. Depending on the model, recordings may go to a microSD card, hub or NVR, NAS, FTP server, or computer. Check the exact camera’s recording options, internet requirements, and privacy documentation before you buy.

What local video storage means

Local storage means footage is saved to hardware you manage rather than—or in addition to—a vendor’s recording cloud. These options work differently, so confirm where recordings are kept and whether you can retrieve them yourself.

  • Camera microSD card: The camera writes recordings to a card installed in the device. This can suit a compatible single camera or small setup, but the footage and card are physically with the camera.
  • Hub or NVR: A compatible camera sends recordings to a central hub or network video recorder, often with a hard drive. This can centralize storage for multiple cameras, but requires compatible equipment and setup.
  • NAS, FTP, or computer: Some cameras can record to network storage, an FTP server, or a PC. This can fit an existing storage setup, but depends on the camera’s supported protocols and configuration.
  • Temporary offline buffer: Some cameras hold events internally while disconnected, then upload them to the cloud after reconnecting. That is not necessarily a user-accessible local archive.

Google says certain Nest cameras buffer events during an outage, upload them after service returns, and then remove them from internal memory. Google also says, “For security reasons, your camera’s internal memory is not accessible.” That buffer is different from a user-managed archive. Google Nest: What happens when your camera is offline

Local recording is not the same as fully offline operation

A camera may save footage locally and still rely on an internet connection, vendor account, app, cloud alerts, or remote-access service for other features. The documentation cited here does not establish that every camera with local recording works entirely offline or sends no device data to a cloud service. Check the specific model’s documentation for recording destination, remote viewing, notifications, and account requirements.

MindStor 64GB Micro SDXC Memory Card, 90MB/s Read, U1, A1, with Adapter
  • Fast Read up to 90MB/s — Open photos, transfer files, and browse galleries faster; ideal for daily shooting and quick backups. The read and write speed is based on internal testing conducted under controlled conditions. The actual speed may vary depending on the device, interface, usage conditions, and other factors used
  • A1 App Performance — Optimized random IOPS for smoother app installs and faster launches on Android devices. (1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Full HD Ready — Stable 1080P recording for phones, dashcams, and security cameras without frame drops. Temperature, shock, water, and X-ray resistant; keeps your data safe on the move.
  • Built for Daily Use — Due to different measurement standards, the actual storage capacity shown by the device's operating system may be less than the capacity shown on the product label. Available storage capacity is higher than 58GB.
  • Wide Compatibility — Works with phones, tablets, dash cams, action cams, laptops; includes adapter. Check if your device is compatible with MicroSD capacity. The SD logo is a trademark of SD-3 C, LLC.

Also distinguish a cloud-storage subscription from other internet-connected services. A manufacturer may offer local recording without a storage plan while still providing app or remote-access features. The available evidence does not establish universal privacy behavior across brands or models.

Choose a storage method for your setup

Storage method Good fit What to verify Main trade-off
microSD card A compatible camera or modest setup Whether the exact model has a card slot, supported capacity, and event or continuous recording Simple destination, but retention is limited by card capacity and the footage stays with the camera.
Hub or NVR Several compatible cameras or centralized recording Camera compatibility, channel count, required or included drive, and retention for your settings More equipment and setup; recordings are centralized.
NAS, FTP, or PC People who already maintain network storage or want another supported destination Protocol support, recording mode, network setup, and retention More control, but often more technical and product-dependent.
Internal offline buffer Temporary continuity during an outage Whether buffered events are accessible, how much fits, and what happens after reconnection May only bridge an outage; it may not be a private archive you can manage.

For a card-based setup, buy only a microSD card supported by the camera. TP-Link says a separately sold card or a Tapo Hub is required for continuous recording on supported cameras or doorbells, and recording must be enabled in device settings. Check the model’s specifications before choosing a card capacity or class. TP-Link Tapo: Continuous recording setup

Reolink: several local destinations, but model limits apply

Reolink says its cloud subscription is optional and identifies microSD cards and FTP servers as alternatives. Its continuous-recording guidance also lists compatible microSD cards, Reolink NVRs or Home Hubs, local recording to a PC through Reolink Client, FTP, and third-party software. These options depend on the camera and setup. Reolink cautions that most battery-powered cameras do not support continuous recording, even when paired with an NVR or Home Hub; they may record alarm events instead. Reolink gives a vendor example for a 2TB HDD NVR recording continuously: 8 days for four 8MP cameras and 6 days for four 12MP cameras. The page does not state a publication year. These are examples, not a guaranteed retention period; actual results depend on the system’s settings and configuration. Reolink: Local storage for security cameras

TP-Link Tapo: verify the exact device’s recording options

TP-Link documents local storage using a separately purchased microSD card and cloud storage through Tapo Care on supported models. Available recording options and combinations vary by product and hardware limitations; do not assume every Tapo model supports the same local, network, and cloud features. TP-Link Tapo: Storage options

eufy: examples are product-specific

eufy says video recording does not require a cloud-backup subscription and that, without cloud backup, footage is saved to built-in storage. For Solo Outdoor Cams, eufy lists microSD storage with continuous and clip recording, cloud backup with clip recording, and NAS (RTSP) with continuous and clip recording. Its support page says microSD models can record offline and sync when connected to a network. These details apply to the documented products; they should not be generalized to every eufy camera. eufy: Is a cloud subscription needed? eufy: Solo Outdoor Cam recording storage

Google Nest: offline memory is not a local archive

Google says Nest cameras and doorbells upload and save video in the cloud. For certain models, internal memory holds events temporarily during disconnection and uploads them after reconnection; users cannot access that memory as an archive. Google’s help page also distinguishes event history from 24/7 history, with availability depending on camera model and paid plan. It says some newer battery cameras and doorbells can provide up to three hours of event video history without a subscription, while older models may provide only snapshots without a plan. Features and limits can change, so check the current device information for your model and region. Google Nest: Video history and subscriptions

Check these details before choosing a camera

  1. Find the exact model’s supported destination. Confirm whether it records to microSD, a hub or NVR, NAS, FTP, or a computer. Do not rely on a brand-wide feature list.
  2. Confirm recording mode and power requirements. Check whether the camera records events, continuously, or both. Battery-powered models may have different limits from wired or PoE models.
  3. Check storage capacity and retention. Verify maximum supported card or drive size and look for an estimate that matches your resolution, number of cameras, and recording schedule.
  4. Decide how much resilience you need. A card inside a camera can be lost if the camera or card is stolen or damaged. A separate recorder moves storage away from the camera, but does not by itself guarantee theft protection or backup.
  5. Check what needs the internet. Establish whether local recording continues without a connection and whether live viewing, alerts, or remote access still work.
  6. Ask what happens after reconnection. If the device stores events temporarily during an outage, find out whether those events remain available locally, upload to a cloud service, or are removed.

Which setup should you choose?

For a compatible camera and straightforward local recording, a microSD card is often the simplest route. For multiple compatible cameras or centralized storage, consider a hub or NVR and check its retention estimate for your specific configuration. Choose NAS, FTP, or PC recording only when the exact camera supports that workflow and you are comfortable maintaining it. In every case, treat local storage, subscription requirements, offline operation, and cloud data handling as separate questions.
