For most beginners who want a straightforward desktop chat app, start by comparing LM Studio and Jan. LM Studio documents a clear install-download-load-chat workflow; Jan’s quickstart describes downloading a default model on first launch. Choose based on your computer, the setup you prefer, and whether you want a desktop app, a self-hosted browser interface, or a model runner. These are different product categories, not interchangeable chat apps.
What “local AI chat” means
A local chat app is the interface you use; the AI model is a separate download that the app runs. A typical first session involves installing the app, choosing and downloading model files, loading the model into memory, and starting a conversation. Loading a model uses computer resources for its weights and other parameters, so the model you choose affects what your hardware can handle.
“Local” describes where the model’s inference runs. It does not, by itself, tell you how capable the model is or what its license permits. LM Studio notes that models described as open-source or open-weight differ in how open they are and in their licenses; check the specific model’s terms before using it.
Which app fits which beginner?
| Option | What it is | Consider it if… |
|---|---|---|
| LM Studio | Desktop app. Its getting-started guide covers installing the app, downloading a model, loading it, and chatting. Its system-requirements page lists supported systems and hardware guidance. | You want a guided desktop workflow for finding a model and chatting with it. |
| Jan | Desktop app for Mac, Windows, and Linux. Its quickstart describes a default model download on first launch. It supports local models and optional cloud providers. | You want to try a desktop app with an initial model, while keeping cloud-provider connections as an option rather than a requirement for local use. |
| Open WebUI | A self-hosted web interface, rather than a standalone desktop chat app. Its alternatives guide points readers seeking a desktop app toward LM Studio or Jan. | You specifically want a browser-based interface and are comfortable setting up a self-hosted service. |
| Ollama | A local model runner, not the same category as an all-in-one desktop chat app. Open WebUI’s alternatives guide notes native integration with it. | You prioritize running a local model, using an API, or pairing a backend with a separate interface. |
This is a category-and-setup comparison, not a full feature scorecard. The available documentation does not establish directly comparable current versions, privacy practices, model catalogs, document support, or licenses for all four options.

How to choose between LM Studio and Jan
Choose LM Studio for a guided model-to-chat path
LM Studio’s getting-started guide lays out the steps: install the app, download a model, load it into memory, and chat. Its documentation says that once a model is loaded, you can start a back-and-forth conversation in the Chat tab. Check its current system-requirements page against your operating system and hardware before downloading a model.
Choose Jan if its first-launch flow suits you
Jan’s quickstart lists Mac, Windows, and Linux installation and describes downloading a default model on first launch before chatting. Jan also documents optional cloud providers. A local model and a cloud model are distinct modes: using a cloud provider means the model runs on that provider’s servers, not entirely on your computer.

Check your computer before choosing a model
Hardware guidance is app- and model-specific, not a universal minimum for local AI. LM Studio recommends 16GB or more of RAM for supported Apple Silicon Macs and Windows PCs. It also says smaller models and modest context sizes may work on 8GB Macs. Those are LM Studio’s recommendations, not a promise that every model or app will run well on those systems.
Jan likewise advises that local models use the computer’s RAM and processing power, and asks users to select a model that fits their system. In practice, consider the target model as well as the app: a model can download successfully yet still be impractical to load or use on your computer.

Understand the privacy difference between local and cloud modes
Jan describes local models as running entirely on the user’s machine and working offline without an API key. It describes cloud models as running on provider servers and requiring a key. That product documentation does not establish that every app feature or configuration is offline. Confirm the selected model/provider mode and relevant app settings rather than treating the word “local” as a blanket privacy guarantee.

A simple first-session checklist
- Pick the app category. Choose a desktop chat app for the simplest standalone workflow; choose a self-hosted web interface or model runner only if that is specifically what you want.
- Check official system requirements. Compare your operating system and available memory with the app’s current guidance.
- Select a model that fits your machine. The model is a separate download, and its requirements affect loading and performance.
- Load the model before starting a chat. The app must allocate memory for the model before you can converse with it.
- Confirm whether the session is local or cloud-based. If using a cloud provider, review its mode and settings; a cloud model runs on the provider’s servers.
- Read the model license. “Open-weight” or “open-source” labels do not imply identical permissions.
