Use it to measure a controlled cohort of browser sessions, then pair it with protocol-level traffic generation when you need scale. This guide shows how to run a bounded Puppeteer test, what to measure, how to choose a test profile, and how to avoid mistaking runner limits for application limits.
What Puppeteer can—and cannot—tell you
Puppeteer is a JavaScript library for controlling Chrome or Firefox through the Chrome DevTools Protocol or WebDriver BiDi. It is primarily a browser-automation layer: it can open pages, interact with them, and expose browser-side performance data. It is not a distributed load generator or a way to make each browser page equivalent to a fixed number of real users.
A browser session runs JavaScript, lays out and paints a page, downloads resources, and consumes CPU and memory. That makes browser tests useful for answering questions such as “Can a user complete checkout while the site is busy?” and “How does the interface behave under load?” It also makes them expensive to scale. Artillery’s operational guidance is to plan for at least one vCPU per concurrent headless browser instance; treat that as a starting point, not a universal capacity guarantee.
For large traffic volumes, use a hybrid: generate most requests with a protocol-level load tool, and run a smaller Puppeteer cohort against critical journeys. The browser cohort helps measure user-visible behavior; protocol traffic supplies scale more efficiently.

Choose the test question before writing the script
Decide what the test should establish, and write down the journey’s start and end points. A test that only measures navigation is different from one that signs in, searches, adds an item to a cart, and checks out.
- Journey duration: elapsed time from a defined starting action to a meaningful completion condition.
- Page and request health: navigation failures, HTTP response codes, failed requests, and unexpected error states.
- Browser work: script execution, layout, JavaScript heap use, and DOM size.
- User experience: Web Vitals such as LCP, CLS, INP, FCP, and TTFB, when the test needs frontend performance signals.
- System capacity: server-side latency, errors, resource use, and saturation, collected from application and infrastructure monitoring alongside the browser test.
Set pass/fail thresholds from your service objectives and establish them before running the test. A browser timing alone cannot explain whether a slowdown came from the application, the network, a third-party dependency, or an overloaded test runner.
Set up a bounded Puppeteer run
Install Node.js and Puppeteer in a dedicated test project. The following example uses Puppeteer’s bundled browser, opens a fixed-size pool of pages, repeats one journey a set number of times, and writes a JSON report. It records journey duration, navigation response status, failed requests, browser metrics, and basic run-level summaries. Run it only against a system you own or are authorized to test.
npm init -y
npm install puppeteer
Save this as load-test.mjs. Set the target URL, concurrency, and iteration count for a small calibration run first.

console.log(JSON.stringify({ completed: report.completed, errors: report.errors, non2xx: report.non2xx, p50Ms: report.p50Ms, p95Ms: report.p95Ms }, null, 2));
Run the script with modest values first:
TARGET_URL=https://your-staging.example CONCURRENCY=2 ITERATIONS=10 node load-test.mjs
The sample intentionally measures until domcontentloaded and then waits for the body. Those conditions are not necessarily the point at which a page is useful to a customer. Replace the selector and journey steps with the real completion condition—for example, waiting for a search-results element after submitting a query. A fixed sleep is usually less reliable than waiting for a meaningful state.

Make the journey representative
For an authenticated flow, establish the session using the same supported mechanism as your application, or automate the login steps before starting the timed journey. Avoid sharing one mutable account or cart across concurrent workers if the application’s behavior depends on that state. Use dedicated test accounts and data, and reset or vary data between runs where appropriate.
Give sessions realistic pacing and vary inputs where production users would. Reusing exactly the same URL, cookies, and cached resources can produce a different workload from real traffic. Conversely, clearing cache on every iteration may misrepresent returning users. Choose the cache and cookie behavior to match the question you are testing, and record that choice with the results.
Do not inadvertently turn a test of your site into a load test of analytics, chat, advertising, or other third-party services. Exclude third-party traffic unless you have permission and a reason to include it.
Measure more than navigation time
page.metrics() returns browser metrics that can help explain what the page did during the run. Useful fields include TaskDuration, ScriptDuration, JSHeapUsedSize, LayoutDuration, and Nodes. They are diagnostic clues, not substitutes for server telemetry or user-centric metrics. Record them at a consistent point in the journey and compare runs under the same conditions.
Navigation events such as load and DOMContentLoaded are convenient markers, but they do not alone reveal whether a page felt fast or remained responsive. For frontend experience, collect Web Vitals: LCP (largest contentful paint), CLS (cumulative layout shift), INP (interaction to next paint), FCP (first contentful paint), and TTFB (time to first byte). Puppeteer does not automatically turn these into a complete load-test report. Use an appropriate browser instrumentation approach or a load-testing tool with documented Web Vitals collection, and validate the measurements against the page and browser setup you use.

Keep the following dimensions together in the same report or dashboard:
- Journey timings and percentile distribution, not only an average.
- HTTP response status, navigation errors, request failures, and application-level failure indicators.
- Web Vitals and browser metrics for the browser cohort.
- Backend latency, error rates, CPU, memory, queues, and database or connection-pool signals from monitoring.
- Test-runner CPU and memory, so that runner saturation is distinguishable from application saturation.
Control concurrency and increase load safely
Never start an unbounded number of browser processes inside a loop. The sample creates one browser and a fixed number of pages; increase the pool deliberately and monitor the machine running it. Puppeteer pages share a browser process, but they still consume resources and are not cost-free independent users.
- Calibrate: run at low concurrency and confirm that the journey, instrumentation, and cleanup work correctly.
- Observe the runner: monitor its CPU and memory as well as the application. If the runner is saturated, browser timings stop being a clean measure of application capacity.
- Increase gradually: raise concurrency in controlled steps, keeping test data and run conditions consistent.
- Distribute when needed: use multiple workers or a load-testing platform for larger tests, and aggregate results without losing the worker and region context.
- Stop on guardrails: define limits for error rates and system health, and have a way to stop the run if the test causes unintended impact.
A number of browser pages is not a reliable conversion to a number of real users. Browser CPU, available memory, rendering, networking, cache state, and third-party behavior all affect the workload and the results.
Choose a test profile that answers the question
| Profile | What it helps reveal | Practical shape |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline | Normal behavior and a reference for comparison. | Low, steady concurrency with repeatable journeys and stable test data. |
| Spike or flash | Autoscaling delays, startup and readiness behavior, and CPU bottlenecks during a burst. | Artillery describes spikes as typically under 30 minutes; this is operational guidance, not a required test duration. |
| Soak | Memory leaks, resource-pool exhaustion, and lifecycle problems that appear over time. | Artillery describes soak tests commonly as 6–12 hours at 10–20% above baseline. Adjust to your own baseline and objectives. |
| Hybrid | High traffic volume plus browser-level coverage of critical journeys and frontend experience. | Protocol-level virtual users generate most traffic; a smaller browser cohort measures the selected journeys. |
Spike and soak durations are documented rules of thumb, not universal definitions. Match the profile to the failure mode you need to find, your service objectives, and your authorized test window.
When to use a load-testing platform instead
For distributed orchestration, higher traffic volume, CI/CD thresholds, monitoring integration, or retained reporting, compare tools on browser fidelity versus generated-user scale, CPU and memory cost, Web Vitals support, geographic distribution, test-data and cache controls, and reporting capabilities.

Artillery documents a browser engine with Web Vitals, step, memory, and HTTP metrics, plus distributed execution and cloud reporting; it also cautions that browser workers are resource-intensive. Grafana k6 documents browser testing alongside protocol-level performance testing, custom Performance API measures, CI/CD automation, and a hybrid browser-plus-protocol approach. A load test and a Lighthouse audit answer related but different questions. Lighthouse can audit a page after Puppeteer has established custom state, such as an authenticated session or a specific page condition. The Lighthouse project documents launching Chrome with Puppeteer, passing a Puppeteer page to Lighthouse, injecting changes, and reading audit scores; it also documents connecting to an existing Chrome instance through its WebSocket endpoint. A focused audit can help diagnose a page, but it does not replace concurrent traffic testing.
Troubleshooting common failures
Navigation times out or the page never reaches the expected state
A timeout can indicate a slow or unavailable target, but it can also come from waiting for an event that never occurs—for example, a page with ongoing network activity when the script waits for network idle. Check whether the target is reachable from the runner, choose a navigation condition that matches the page, and wait for a meaningful selector or application state. Preserve timeouts as failures in the report rather than silently dropping those runs.
Results get worse as concurrency increases, but the site looks healthy
Check the test runner first. High runner CPU or memory pressure can slow browsers before the application is saturated. Reduce browser concurrency, move workers to adequately provisioned machines, and correlate browser results with server-side metrics. Do not attribute runner saturation to the target service.
HTTP errors or failed requests appear
Inspect response codes and failed-request URLs, then compare them with application logs and monitoring. Check for test-data collisions, exhausted test accounts, rate limits, environment access controls, and failures in dependencies you intentionally included. If the failing resource belongs to a third party, stop sending it test traffic unless you have authorization.

Timings vary too much between runs
Keep the browser version, runner capacity, viewport, target environment, test data, cookies, cache policy, and journey steps consistent. Note whether the run includes warm-up behavior, and separate warm-up from measured iterations if your question requires it. Report percentiles and errors alongside the conditions; one best-case run is not a capacity result.
The page looks fine but the user experience is poor
A navigation event can complete while the main content is delayed, layout shifts occur, or interactions remain sluggish. Add Web Vitals and an explicit interaction in the journey, then compare those measurements with browser metrics and backend traces.

If the immediate need is a clean capture of a page rather than concurrent load generation, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its capture flow accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Puppeteer simulate thousands of concurrent users?
It can control many browser pages in principle, but headless browsers are resource-intensive. For high-volume traffic, generate most load at the protocol level and reserve browser instances for critical journeys.
Does Puppeteer report Core Web Vitals automatically?
No. Puppeteer exposes browser metrics, but Web Vitals require suitable instrumentation or a tool that collects them.
Can I use a Lighthouse score as my load-test result?
No. A Lighthouse audit is useful for focused page diagnostics; it is not a measure of how the application behaves under concurrent traffic.
