Start with the exact, timestamped message beside the stream health indicator in YouTube Live Control Room. “Encoder error” can mean the encoder cannot start or that YouTube has detected a problem with a stream that is already reaching it; the message identifies which setting or condition to investigate.

First, identify when the error happens

Open YouTube Studio, go to Live Control Room, select the stream, and read the message beside its health indicator. Note the exact wording and timestamp. YouTube says an error can remain visible until it is fixed, so use the message—not the broad label “encoder error”—to choose a fix. YouTube’s current documentation describes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate, but dashboard labels may vary by language or change over time. YouTube’s live-stream error messages explain the categories.

A failure before the encoder connects points first to the stream key, account connection, or destination setup. A warning after YouTube receives the stream more often points to its video, audio, encoding settings, or connection. API states such as active, created, error, inactive, and ready, and health values such as good, ok, bad, and noData, are diagnostic states; they do not by themselves tell you the underlying cause. The Live Streaming API reference lists configuration issue identifiers and descriptions.

If Livepush cannot start the encoder

Refresh the YouTube stream key

YouTube’s first recommendation for a third-party encoder startup failure is to get a current stream key in Live Control Room, copy it into the encoder, and try again. Make sure you are using the key for the active stream or event, not an older event. If you sign in to YouTube from inside third-party encoding software instead of entering a stream key, YouTube directs you to that software’s support team. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the stream you intend to run.

  3. In the encoder or Livepush destination, replace the old key with the current one and save the settings.
  4. Start the encoder again and check whether the stream appears in Live Control Room.

Check how Livepush is connected to your channel

Livepush supports connecting a YouTube account or configuring a destination manually with a YouTube RTMP key. The right check depends on which path you used.

  • Linked account: Confirm the intended YouTube channel is selected and the destination is saved. If the channel was unlinked, reconnect it, select the channel, and save the destination again.
  • Manual RTMP key: Confirm that the key belongs to the active YouTube event and was copied correctly into the Livepush destination. Manual setup requires configuring events individually, so do not assume a key from another event will work.

Livepush describes these setup paths in its YouTube setup guide and Livepush usage guide.

If YouTube receives the stream but reports poor health

Change the setting named by the warning, then check stream health again. Avoid changing several unrelated settings at once: that makes it harder to tell which change resolved the issue.

Format, codec, or container warning

YouTube’s standard ingest guidance expects H.264 video and AAC audio. Its error categories also cover unsupported codecs, an invalid container, and mismatched profiles. Set the encoder output to the format YouTube expects and the profile supported by your setup. If YouTube names a particular mismatch, address that specific item first. The error-message guide describes these warnings; the API reference lists the related configuration issue classes.

Bitrate warning

For a fixed-resolution entry point, YouTube says the stream bitrate must match the value for the selected resolution in its encoder settings. Compare the selected resolution and bitrate in Live Control Room with the encoder output. If your available connection cannot sustain the chosen resolution, lower the resolution rather than forcing a bitrate the connection cannot carry. YouTube’s error guide recommends 128 Kbps for audio; use its current encoder-settings table for the video bitrate appropriate to your selected resolution instead of relying on a generic figure.

Audio warning

YouTube expects exactly one audio stream. It flags missing audio, multiple audio streams, and audio with more than two channels; its guidance supports one or two channels. Check that the encoder is not sending duplicate audio tracks and that the selected channel configuration matches the stream settings. The error may also point to the codec or profile rather than the channel count.

Video, resolution, or frame-rate warning

The ingest must contain one video stream. YouTube flags missing or multiple video streams, interlaced output, excessive frame rate, and a resolution mismatch. Use progressive video, confirm that only one video stream is being sent, and match the resolution selected in Ingestion Settings. If the warning names the frame rate, adjust the encoder’s output frame rate to the expected value.

Keyframe or GOP warning

YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds—for example, every 60 frames at 30 fps. Its warnings can indicate intervals that are too long or too short; the API also identifies open GOP and GOP-length issues. Set a two-second keyframe interval where applicable, and follow the warning’s exact expected value if it specifies one. Check that the encoder is not using open GOP.

Primary and backup streams do not match

If you configured primary and backup ingest streams, compare their settings. YouTube requires them to match for items including codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe frequency, audio sample rate, and channel configuration. Correct the mismatched parameter on one stream so both use the same setting.

If the local preview looks right, investigate the connection

When the encoder preview and audio sound correct but YouTube still reports trouble, check the encoder’s CPU load or logs and, if available, a local recording. If those also look healthy, test the outbound internet connection; YouTube recommends contacting your internet provider when a connection test identifies a network problem. There is no single speed threshold that applies to every resolution and setup, so use the actual warning and your selected stream settings to guide the diagnosis.

RTMPS SSL error, timeout, or failed connection

For an RTMPS SSL error, verify that both the protocol and server address are correct and use rtmps, not rtmp. YouTube says port 443 may help with certain SSL errors. For timeouts, verify the server URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. Get the server URL and key from the current Live Control Room event rather than reusing details from an old setup. See YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.

Common symptoms and what to check

Symptom First check
Encoder fails before the stream starts Replace the encoder’s key with the current key from the active Live Control Room event.
Livepush destination no longer connects For a linked destination, reconnect the channel and save it; for manual setup, verify the active event’s RTMP key.
YouTube reports incorrect video settings Match the named format, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or keyframe setting.
No audio, duplicate audio, or channel warning Send exactly one audio stream and use one or two channels.
RTMPS SSL error or timeout Check the current server URL, rtmps protocol, encoder RTMPS support, and—where relevant—port 443.
Preview is healthy but ingest remains unstable Review encoder CPU/logs, a local recording, and outbound network health.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you repeatedly stream prerecorded videos as a YouTube loop and the warnings come from managing ingest settings yourself, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only, and it does not stream from a live camera. Read more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
