Live streaming software and live analytics are usually separate parts of a setup. Software such as OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop captures and mixes video and audio, encodes the program, and sends it to a destination. The destination platform—such as YouTube—or a connected multistream service supplies the audience and performance data. Choose your production software for how you want to make the stream; choose your analytics around where you broadcast and what you need to measure.
What “real-time analytics” means for a live stream
There is no single standard analytics package built into every streaming app. A production app may show whether its encoder is working and the stream is reaching the destination, while viewer counts, chat activity, and audience reports come from YouTube or another service. A multistream dashboard can combine some information from connected destinations, but its coverage and totals depend on those platforms’ APIs.
That distinction matters when a number changes or appears late: an encoder’s stream-health status, a platform’s live viewer count, and a processed post-stream report are different kinds of information. Use the destination’s live dashboard for operational monitoring, then use its processed reports for analysis after the broadcast.
What you can see while streaming to YouTube
YouTube Live Control Room provides live operational information, including stream health, concurrent viewers and peak concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, and average view duration. See YouTube’s guide to live-stream metrics for its definitions and availability.

After the stream, YouTube Analytics can report watch time, audience retention, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices. YouTube says video-level live reports include peak concurrents and chat messages and may appear within minutes after a stream ends. “May” is important: the report is processed, not a guarantee that every figure is final immediately.
Live Control Room and YouTube Analytics can show different values because they do not measure or process data in the same way. YouTube Analytics is based on the video ID and is processed and despammed. Treat the live dashboard as an operational view and Analytics as the platform’s processed reporting, rather than expecting the two to match exactly.
How the main software options differ
| Option | Main role | What it offers | Analytics and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Production and recording | Free, open-source software for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It supports scenes, multiple sources, transitions, audio mixing, filters, and plugins or scripts. | OBS is production software; its product information does not establish a full native audience-analytics suite. Use your destination’s live dashboard or a separate service for viewer and audience reporting. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Production with creator features | Integrates tools such as alerts, widgets, overlays, tips, and dashboard features. Its standard offering includes free options. | Streamlabs describes multistreaming as requiring Streamlabs Ultra; confirm current plan terms and supported destinations before choosing it. |
| Restream | Multistream service and connected-channel analytics | Can aggregate supported channel and stream data, including views, stream counts and duration, chat messages, and channel breakdowns. Its software guidance also describes a browser-based Studio for guest or browser-based production; check current availability. | Analytics depend on connected platform APIs. Custom RTMP channels are excluded, totals may differ slightly from native platform figures, and its help page says CSV and PDF export are not available. |
| YouTube Live Control Room and Analytics | Destination monitoring and reporting | Live monitoring in Control Room and processed post-stream reporting in YouTube Analytics. | Useful for YouTube streams; live and processed figures may differ, and some video-level reports may take time to appear. |
OBS describes itself as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming” on the OBS Project website. That is the project’s product description, not an independent performance evaluation.

Choose by workflow, not by a universal “best”
Choose OBS when production flexibility matters
OBS is a fit if you want to build scenes from multiple sources, control audio and filters, and use an extensible desktop production tool. Plan to monitor audience metrics in the destination’s own dashboard or add a service that supports your platforms; do not choose OBS on the assumption that its homepage promises a complete built-in audience analytics suite.
Choose Streamlabs when integrated creator tools suit your production
Alerts, overlays, widgets, tips, and dashboard features can make Streamlabs convenient for a creator workflow. Check which functions are included in the plan you intend to use, especially if multistreaming is central: Streamlabs’ documentation places multistreaming in Ultra. Its setup guidance also discusses access to stats and encoding choices, but plan and platform details can change.
Choose Restream when cross-channel coordination is the priority
Restream can bring supported destination data and chat into a more consolidated workflow. Its analytics are an API-based view, not a promise of complete or perfectly synchronized totals: Custom RTMP channels are excluded, and platform figures may vary slightly. Its help documentation says CSV and PDF analytics export are not available. For browser-based production or guests, its Studio may be relevant, subject to current feature availability.

Use YouTube’s tools when YouTube is the destination you need to understand
For a YouTube broadcast, Live Control Room is the place to watch live stream health and audience signals; Analytics is where to review processed post-stream reporting. A separate production app can still be useful for building the program, but it does not replace the destination’s own reporting.

- Build the broadcast in your production software. Add the sources, scenes, transitions, and audio you need in OBS or Streamlabs. Confirm the selected destination and account connection before going live.
- Send the encoded stream to the destination. Use the software’s supported destination connection or encoder workflow. If connecting through a stream key, use the key provided by the destination and keep it private; a stream key authorizes broadcasting to the associated channel.
- Watch stream health at the destination. For YouTube, keep Live Control Room available to catch health issues and monitor concurrent viewers, chat rate, and other live metrics. A production app’s encoder status and the platform’s stream-health status answer related but not identical questions.
- Review processed reporting after the broadcast. Check YouTube Analytics for watch time, retention, traffic sources, and other post-stream dimensions. Allow for processing and do not assume a live figure and a later report are directly interchangeable.
- If you multistream, check both the aggregator and native destinations. A service such as Restream can combine data from supported API-connected channels, but its coverage excludes Custom RTMP analytics and its totals may not precisely match each platform.
Plan the computer and optional equipment around the show
The computer must be capable of running the content and encoding the stream at the same time. Workload depends on the content, resolution, encoder, and other active applications. Streamlabs’ setup guidance discusses the trade-off between CPU-based x264 and GPU hardware encoding and notes that higher output resolution can increase resource use; treat that as vendor guidance, not a guarantee for any particular machine.
- Microphone: optional, but useful when clear spoken audio is part of the broadcast. Audio mixing and filters are available in OBS.
- Webcam: optional when you want a camera image in the program; it is not required for a screen-based or other non-camera broadcast.
- Capture card: one possible way to add an external video source. OBS lists capture cards among its possible sources, but not every stream needs one.
These are conditional choices, not a required shopping list. Pick hardware only after deciding what sources and audio the broadcast needs.
