Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGood YouTube live-stream etiquette starts before you press Go Live: set clear expectations, prepare chat controls and moderators, check your audio and video, and keep private information off-screen. During the stream, welcome viewers, handle disagreement calmly, apply chat rules consistently, and use only content you have permission to stream.
Before you go live: set expectations and prepare
Tell viewers what to expect
Explain what the stream is about, when it starts, and how viewers can participate. If you plan to take questions, say how; if you cannot respond to every message, set that expectation early. These are useful creator practices, not YouTube requirements.
Choose chat settings for the event
Open chat makes it easy for viewers to join, but can bring more messages to manage. For a busy or higher-risk event, consider subscriber-only or members-only chat, slow mode, blocked words, and filters that hold potentially inappropriate messages for review. YouTube also lets creators turn live chat off on supported streams. Tell viewers about restrictions before or at the start so they understand how to participate. None of these controls guarantees that every harmful message will be caught; YouTube notes that no system is perfect. See YouTube Help: Moderate live chat.
Assign a moderator when you need coverage
A trusted moderator can help keep up with chat while you focus on hosting. YouTube provides standard and managing moderator roles with different permissions, so give each person only the access they need. Moderation tools include removing messages, putting a user in timeout, and hiding a user. Review the available roles and actions in YouTube Help: Moderate live chat.

Preview the stream and protect private information
Preview before going live, check that audio and video are working, and consider how viewers using mobile devices will experience the stream. Monitor sound as well as the picture; an accessory such as a USB microphone may help in some setups, but etiquette does not require a particular device. Keep addresses, private messages, account credentials, and other sensitive information out of the frame and conversation. YouTube Help advises: “Be cautious about sharing any personal info during your live stream and in Live Chat.” Read YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
Check safety requirements if minors are involved
YouTube’s current guidance sets the minimum age to live stream at 16. Streams featuring 13–15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult can face feature restrictions. If minors participate, check YouTube’s current rules and ensure appropriate adult awareness and supervision; these requirements and enforcement details can change. See YouTube Help: Create a live stream on mobile and its Community Guidelines.

During the stream: make chat welcoming and manageable
Orient viewers, including late arrivals
Welcome people as they arrive, introduce the topic and format, and occasionally restate what is happening. A brief orientation helps viewers who joined after the opening understand the conversation without asking others to repeat everything.
Respond thoughtfully without promising to answer everyone
Read and acknowledge useful questions when practical. If the chat is moving too quickly, say so and explain how you will choose questions. Avoid making viewers feel ignored simply because you cannot respond to every message.

Handle disagreement without escalating it
Address reasonable disagreement calmly and keep discussion focused on the subject. Remove abusive or disruptive messages consistently; use a timeout or hide a user when appropriate rather than turning the moderation decision into an argument on-air. YouTube provides these moderation actions, but creators decide how to apply them within its rules.
Keep personal information private
Do not display or discuss someone’s personal information without a sound reason and consent. Keep private conversations and account details off-screen, including notifications that may appear while you share a screen. YouTube’s streaming tips advise caution with personal information in both the stream and live chat.

Use third-party content only when you have the rights
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. A match can cause the stream to be replaced with a placeholder, interrupted, or terminated. Even licensed material may require the rights owner to add your channel to an allowlist. Do not assume that a song, clip, or other work is safe to use just because it is available online or you have seen other creators use it. Review YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams and the Community Guidelines.

| Choice | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Open chat | You want viewers to join and participate with minimal barriers. | More people may be able to post, increasing the volume you need to manage. |
| Subscriber-only or members-only chat | You want to limit who can post in chat. | Some viewers may not be able to participate. Explain the restriction plainly. |
| Slow mode | You need to reduce posting speed. | Messages arrive less rapidly, but viewers also have fewer chances to post quickly. |
| Creator-only moderation | The chat is manageable while you host. | You must divide attention between the stream and moderation. |
| Delegated moderation | The format or chat volume makes extra coverage useful. | Moderators need to be trusted, and each should receive only the permissions needed. |
YouTube supports combinations of restricted chat and slow mode in some configurations. Available settings and interface details can change; consult YouTube’s current live-chat moderation guidance when configuring a stream.

End the stream cleanly and review the archive
Let viewers know the stream is ending, thank them, and point to any next step you have announced. After the event has stopped on YouTube, YouTube’s streaming tips advise stopping the encoder. Check the archive and chat replay settings afterward: live-stream chat replay is on by default for archives, and you can turn it off if you do not want the replay available. See Streaming tips and Moderate live chat.
