Your channel rules should make participation easier—not replace YouTube or Twitch platform policies—and the right approach depends on your audience and the kind of stream you run.
Set expectations before viewers join
New viewers should be able to tell what belongs in your chat and how to take part. Keep guidelines concise, specific, and proportionate to your channel. Useful examples include being civil, staying on topic, welcoming questions, avoiding spam or self-promotion, and criticizing ideas rather than attacking people.
On YouTube, channel owners can set up to three channel guidelines and a welcome message. Viewers can see the guidelines before participating in live chat. You can configure them in YouTube Studio under Settings > Community > Channel guidelines; YouTube’s current instructions are at Set your channel guidelines. These custom rules communicate your expectations, but they do not automatically hide or remove messages. YouTube says its Community Guidelines still apply.
Make rules useful, not intimidating
- State observable behaviors instead of vague demands. For example, “Keep comments about the topic” is clearer than “Be normal.”
- Say how viewers can participate, such as asking questions or joining a poll.
- Explain channel-specific boundaries without presenting them as universal rules for every stream.
- Keep the welcome message brief enough to read quickly.
Twitch also provides channel moderation options such as custom chat rules and viewer verification settings. Available features may vary by account or rollout. See Twitch’s moderation setup guidance for the current controls.

Prepare moderation before going live
Moderation works best when you decide in advance who can act and what tools are appropriate for your chat. YouTube recommends assigning live chat moderators who can interact with viewers, remove inappropriate messages, and hide abusive users. Twitch likewise describes using moderators, chat settings, and reporting to address harassment.
Choose between preventive controls and active moderation
- Preventive controls can reduce friction before a problem appears. Twitch describes options including email or phone verification, follower or subscriber restrictions, a short non-moderator chat delay, and sending blocked hyperlinks to a review queue.
- Human moderation helps interpret context, answer viewers, and respond to behavior that automated settings may not handle well.
- Reactive actions include reviewing held messages, removing content, hiding abusive users, and reporting violations to the platform.
Choose restrictions according to chat volume and the kind of interaction you want. A small discussion stream may benefit more from a moderator who can welcome people and answer questions than from restrictions that make it harder for newcomers to speak. A busier or more abuse-prone chat may need stronger preventive controls. Twitch’s feature details and availability can change; consult its moderation setup page and harassment guidance.

Agree on moderator responsibilities
- Tell moderators which rules matter most and what action to take when a rule is broken.
- Ask them to distinguish disagreement or criticism from personal attacks and harassment.
- Make clear when to remove a message, hide a user, or report conduct to the platform.
- During the stream, acknowledge moderation actions briefly when useful, then return attention to the broadcast.
Keep conversation welcoming and engaging
Treat chat as part of the broadcast, not an interruption. Respond to questions when you can, acknowledge viewers without putting them on the spot, and give people an easy way to join in. YouTube recommends using features such as Live Q&A and polls to involve the audience. They work best when the question is understandable, relevant to the stream, and open to more than one reasonable answer.
Starting or restarting a conversation
- Ask a specific, low-pressure question related to what you are doing or discussing.
- Offer context before asking viewers to weigh in; newcomers may not know the backstory.
- If chat goes quiet, continue the stream naturally rather than demanding that viewers respond.
- When a viewer contributes, respond to the point they made instead of only reading their name aloud.
Respect viewers’ boundaries
- Do not pressure people to share personal information or explain why they are watching quietly.
- Keep jokes and criticism focused on ideas or the stream, not a viewer’s identity or vulnerabilities.
- Do not treat a channel rule as permission to ignore platform-wide safety requirements.

Handle poor behavior consistently
When chat crosses a boundary, use the least disruptive response that protects the conversation and follows platform rules. A moderator can remove an inappropriate message or hide an abusive user; serious or ongoing conduct can also be reported through the platform’s available controls. Avoid turning enforcement into a public argument that gives disruptive behavior more attention.
Twitch’s Community Guidelines apply across its service, including video, chat, whispers, and accounts. Twitch describes safety as a shared responsibility of streamers, moderators, and everyone in chat, and says violations can result in enforcement such as content removal, loss of monetization features, warnings, or account suspension. Its guidelines are a living document and can change; check the Twitch Community Guidelines for the current rules. YouTube’s Community Guidelines also apply regardless of any additional channel rules.

Etiquette mistakes to avoid
- Leaving expectations unstated: viewers and moderators may not know what conduct is welcome.
- Writing rules that are too broad: unclear standards are hard to apply consistently.
- Assuming custom rules enforce themselves: YouTube channel guidelines do not automatically remove or hide live chat messages.
- Restricting participation without a reason: verification or follower limits can deter unwanted behavior, but may also make joining harder for legitimate viewers.
- Arguing with disruptive users: enforce the rule, then return to the stream rather than letting one exchange dominate.
- Calling a personal preference a platform rule: norms such as whether self-promotion is acceptable vary by channel; state your own policy clearly.
