Live preview is the electronic view of a scene that a camera displays before you take a photo. It appears on the rear LCD or an electronic viewfinder (EVF), helping you compose the shot; whether it also reflects exposure adjustments depends on the camera and its settings.

What does live preview mean on a camera?

Live preview—often called live view—is a continuously refreshed electronic image of the scene seen through the camera lens. You view it on the rear screen or EVF before taking a picture. In a mirrorless camera, light reaches the image sensor, which sends a live image to the screen or EVF, as Nikon Australia explains.

The essential point is that the display shows a sensor-derived image, not a direct optical view. Its main purpose is to let you frame and compose a photo electronically.

How is live preview different from an optical viewfinder?

An optical viewfinder lets you look at an optical image through the camera. Live preview displays an electronic feed on an LCD or EVF. Both can help you frame a shot, but only the electronic preview is an image shown by the camera display. Exact camera behavior can vary by model.

Does live preview show the final exposure?

Not necessarily. Some cameras and settings show the effect of exposure adjustments in the preview, but that behavior is not universal. For example, OM Digital Solutions says that on the Olympus E-3, exposure-compensation changes appear in Live View when Live View Boost is off. With Boost on, the display brightens automatically and does not show those changes. See the E-3 support information.

So live preview can help you assess framing and, in some configurations, exposure effects, but it is not a guarantee that the recorded photo will exactly match the display in exposure, color, depth of field, or image quality. Check your camera’s manual or settings if you need to know what its preview represents.

Can live preview appear on a phone?

Yes. Some camera makers also use “Live Preview” for a connected camera’s view shown in a mobile app. GoPro describes its Quik feature as letting you see a connected camera’s view on a mobile device. This can help with framing when the camera is mounted somewhere you cannot easily see its own display. GoPro’s Quik Live Preview support page is dated May 28, 2026.
