The most useful live chat greeting gives a visitor a relevant reason to reply and makes the next step easy. Match the message to the page or likely task, offer help your team can actually provide, and be clear about when someone will respond. These examples are adaptable templates—not performance-tested scripts, and no particular wording is proven to increase conversions.
What makes a live chat greeting useful?
A live chat greeting is the opening message a website chat experience displays to welcome a visitor or invite them into a conversation. It may appear when someone opens chat, or it may be triggered by behavior such as time on a page, a return visit, or cart activity. The available triggers depend on the chat platform.
A strong message connects the visitor’s likely task to a concrete offer of help. Keep the reply low-effort: ask one simple question or suggest one clear next step. Avoid assuming what a visitor wants, pressuring them to engage, or implying that an agent is available when the team is offline.
- Match the context: Offer plan guidance on a pricing page, for example, rather than using the same generic prompt everywhere.
- Be accurate about what you know: Use page context or known customer information only when the business legitimately has it and can display it appropriately.
- Set honest expectations: If the team is unavailable, state when it will respond only if that commitment is realistic.
- Follow through: If the greeting offers product advice, a demo, or support, make sure there is a clear route to deliver it.

Homepage or first visit
“Welcome! Looking for something specific? I’m happy to point you in the right direction.”
This open invitation suits a visitor who may still be exploring. It offers assistance without guessing what brought them to the site.
Pricing page
“Comparing plans? Tell me what you need and I can help you find the right details.”
Use this when the team can answer questions about plan features or direct visitors to accurate plan information. Keep the invitation focused rather than asking visitors to explain their entire situation.

Product page
“Have a question about this item? I can help you compare options or find the right fit.”
This works best when the support team can give informed product guidance. If it cannot advise on suitability, make the offer narrower—for example, help finding specifications or shipping details.
Returning visitor
“Welcome back! Would you like to pick up where you left off, or is there something new I can help with?”
Use a returning-visitor message only when the chat experience can appropriately recognize a return visit. Do not reveal or display personal history that the visitor would not expect the site to use.

Cart or checkout question
“Need a hand before you check out? Send your question and I’ll help if I can.”
A checkout prompt can invite questions without claiming the support team can see a visitor’s cart, account, or order. Mention those details only if the chat team actually has access to them.
Offline support
“We’re away right now. Leave your question and we’ll reply during [published support hours].”
Fill in the bracket with the real schedule. If the channel is asynchronous, say so plainly rather than suggesting an agent is waiting in a live conversation.

Busy period
“Thanks for reaching out. We’re helping other visitors at the moment; we expect to reply in [realistic time].”
Include an estimate only if the team can keep it current and meet it. Otherwise, explain that the team is busy and give the next reliable way to get help.
Choosing a greeting and trigger
The choice is not simply whether to show a message. Consider how it appears, what context it uses, whether a person can respond, and how disruptive it might feel. The approaches below are practical trade-offs, not settings with one universally best answer.
| Choice | Useful when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Passive invitation | Visitors should be able to start a conversation when they want help. | It may be easy to miss if the chat entry point is not noticeable. |
| Proactive trigger | A specific moment, such as a relevant page visit or cart activity, gives the team a useful reason to offer help. | Showing a prompt too early or too often can interrupt browsing; a trigger does not prove the visitor needs assistance. |
| Generic welcome | The site has little reliable context about a visitor’s task. | A broad invitation may feel less relevant than a page-specific offer. |
| Page-specific message | The page gives a reasonable clue about the kind of help a visitor may need. | Do not assume intent from a page view alone or promise help the team cannot provide. |
| Human-staffed conversation | Agents are available to respond within the expectations set by the greeting. | Staffing and workload need to match the message’s implied availability. |
| Offline or asynchronous flow | No agent is available immediately but the team can follow up later. | State the actual response window or support hours; do not call a delayed reply immediate. |
| Personalized message | The platform has appropriate, reliable visitor context that makes the offer more useful. | Use only information the business legitimately has and can display appropriately. |
| Immediate versus behavior-based timing | An immediate prompt suits a visitor who deliberately opens chat; a behavior-based trigger may suit a defined page or action. | There is no universal delay established for proactive greetings. Test whether the prompt feels timely and whether staff can answer. |
When should a live chat greeting appear?
There is no universal delay supported for every website. LiveChat describes behavior-based triggers such as time on a page, return visits, and cart activity; whether and how those triggers can be configured depends on the platform. Choose a meaningful page or action, then use a message that fits that context and the team’s capacity.

Zendesk’s official documentation describes one specific trigger configuration in which “The automatic message will be sent 5 seconds after the visitor has requested a chat.” That five-second interval is for a visitor who has requested chat in that documented setup; it is not a general recommendation that every proactive greeting wait five seconds. Zendesk also documents a trigger based on visitor country code with a French greeting example. This is a product-specific option, not a guarantee that every chat tool detects or supports every language. See Zendesk’s standard chat triggers documentation.
- Choose a page or moment: Start with a specific context where visitors may have a question, such as pricing or product selection.
- Decide what help is available: Identify what an agent can answer or where the visitor can be directed.
- Write a matching invitation: Ask one simple question or offer one next step without presuming what the visitor wants.
- Configure a relevant trigger: Use the platform’s available settings for the selected page or behavior. Trigger options and exact controls vary by platform.
- Check timing and staffing: Confirm the prompt does not appear too early or too often, and that an agent or follow-up process can meet its stated expectations.
- Review the experience: Check whether visitors find the message useful and whether the team can consistently deliver what it promises. The available vendor guidance does not establish a universal timing benchmark or conversion lift.
Do live chat greetings increase conversions?
A relevant greeting can make it easier for a visitor to ask a question, and businesses may use greetings as part of a conversion-focused experience. However, the vendor guidance cited here does not provide independent evidence that a specific line or trigger causes a defined conversion increase. Treat conversion improvement as something to evaluate on your own site, not a guaranteed result of using a particular example.
One LiveChat page says “most users” decide whether to engage within the first 15 seconds, but the page material does not identify the original study. That figure is not established here as reliable evidence or a timing rule.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should a live chat greeting be proactive or wait for a visitor to open chat?
Use a proactive prompt when a specific page or behavior gives the team a relevant offer of help and staffing can support the message. A passive invitation is better when visitors should choose when to begin; neither approach is established as best for every site.
What should an offline chat greeting say?
Say that the team is away, invite the visitor to leave a question, and give real support hours or a response commitment the team can meet.
