There are two different things developers mean by a “live browser debugger”: tools that let you stop and inspect a browser running on your machine, and hosted live views that let you watch or control a remote browser session. For a local Playwright test, start with Playwright’s VS Code extension or Inspector. If the automation already runs in a remote browser, evaluate a hosted view such as Cloudflare Browser Run Live View or Browserless Live Debugger. The right choice depends on where the browser runs, what evidence you need, which framework and browser you use, and whether a person needs to intervene.
What a live browser debugger helps you see
A failing automation test often reports the final symptom rather than the reason: a locator matched nothing, an element was covered, navigation stalled, or the page reached an unexpected state. A live debugger lets you observe the run while it happens and, depending on the tool, pause execution, inspect or change a locator, examine network activity, and resume the run. A trace or recording can also preserve evidence for inspection after the run ends.
“Live” does not necessarily mean the same setup. Playwright’s editor and Inspector tools are suited to debugging a locally run test. Cloudflare Browser Run Live View and Browserless Live Debugger describe ways to inspect hosted browser runs. They overlap in purpose, but they are not interchangeable: a remote-session viewer is not automatically an editor-integrated test debugger, and a local inspector does not by itself provide access to a browser running in a cloud service.

How to watch a Playwright test run locally
For a local Playwright failure, use the tooling already attached to the framework before adding a separate remote debugging service. The VS Code extension and Inspector are designed for interactive test debugging. The command-line debug mode is a quick way to open the browser visibly and stop at a point where you can inspect the page.
Use the VS Code extension
- Open the Playwright test project in VS Code and use the Playwright extension’s test interface to select and debug a test.
- Set a breakpoint in the test at or just before the failing action. Run the test in debug mode so the editor can stop at the breakpoint and expose the error context.
- Enable Show Browser when you need to see the page. Use the locator picker or edit a locator and check whether it highlights the intended element and matches the expected number of elements.
- Inspect actionability logs when an action is waiting or failing. They help distinguish a missing target from a target that is present but not ready to receive the action.
Playwright documents live locator editing and highlighting in the browser, as well as locator picking and actionability logs. These are especially useful when a selector looks plausible but the page’s rendered state differs from what the test author expected.
Use Inspector or pause the test in code
Run the test with Playwright’s debug flag to launch a headed browser and open the Inspector:
npx playwright test --debugIn this mode, the documented default timeout is zero, so the debug run does not use the usual timeout behavior. That is useful for inspection, but do not treat a passing run under debug conditions as proof that the test will meet its normal timing constraints.

To stop at a specific point in a test, add await page.pause() before the action or state you want to inspect, then run the test in debug mode:

When the issue is browser internals rather than test flow, Playwright documents opening Chrome DevTools against a reused browser session.
Use a trace for failures you cannot reproduce interactively
Live debugging is most useful when you can reproduce the problem in a controlled run. For intermittent failures or CI-only problems, a trace gives you an after-the-fact timeline instead. Playwright’s Trace Viewer presents recorded actions alongside DOM snapshots, action details, console output, network requests, and source code. This evidence can help answer whether the page was wrong, the target was unavailable, the request failed, or the test acted on an unexpected state. The overview documents a test runner with tracing and a session-monitoring dashboard with live screencast previews; check the current Playwright documentation for the appropriate configuration in your project.
When a hosted live view is the better fit
If automation is executing in a remote browser, a local headed browser may not show the same session, page state, network path, or environment. A hosted view can attach to the browser that is actually running the workflow, which is useful when a developer needs to observe or intervene rather than infer everything from CI logs.

Cloudflare Browser Run Live View
Cloudflare describes Live View as a way to see and interact with a remote Browser Run session in real time. Its documentation covers sessions created with Playwright, Puppeteer, or CDP endpoints. A session is a remote Chrome instance and can contain several tabs; Live View attaches to a page target. The documented entry points are the dashboard, a generated devtoolsFrontendUrl in a hosted browser interface, or Chrome DevTools. The hosted interface offers tab, full-browser, and DevTools modes.
Cloudflare’s documentation, last updated September 26, 2026, gives different default inactivity timeouts depending on how the session is created: five minutes for dashboard-created sessions and one minute for API-created sessions. It says the timeout can be adjusted up to ten minutes. These are service settings, not universal browser-debugging limits; check the current Cloudflare documentation when configuring a session, especially if a human needs time to inspect it.
Browserless Live Debugger
Browserless describes its Live Debugger for headless Playwright and Puppeteer runs. Its product page advertises request-focused network inspection, including requests, headers, timing, and payloads, along with breakpoints, stepping, live visual feedback, and a code view beside the browser viewport. These are Browserless’s stated capabilities; the available information does not establish how they compare in practice with Playwright’s local tools or Cloudflare’s hosted view. Check the current product documentation for setup, availability, and plan details.
Choose based on the failure and where it happens
- Locator does not match, or an action waits: begin with Playwright Inspector or the VS Code extension. Locator highlighting, editing, and actionability logs directly address these questions.
- The page reaches the wrong state: use breakpoints or
page.pause()to inspect the page at the point of divergence. For a failure that is hard to reproduce, examine a trace’s DOM snapshots, actions, console, and network evidence. - The run exists only in a remote browser: evaluate a hosted live view that can attach to that session. Confirm that it supports the framework or connection method your run uses.
- The failure appears network-related: prioritize a workflow that exposes requests and related details. Playwright Trace Viewer includes network requests; Browserless advertises request, header, timing, and payload inspection.
- An agent or MCP client drives the browser: Playwright MCP’s described debugging features require the
devtoolscapability. Verify that prerequisite rather than assuming every MCP setup exposes debugger controls. - A teammate must take over: verify that the specific hosted mode permits the needed interaction and that the session will remain available long enough. Remote visibility and human control are separate requirements.
This is a workflow-based selection, not a universal ranking. Start with the framework’s own debugger for a local Playwright test; consider hosted inspection when the actual browser is remote or another person needs to observe or intervene in that session.

Troubleshoot common live-debugging problems
The browser does not appear
Check that you started a headed debug run, for example with npx playwright test --debug, and that Show Browser is enabled in the VS Code workflow if you expect the browser pane to be visible. A remote session will not appear in a local browser window merely because the test uses Playwright; use the remote service’s documented live-view entry point.
A locator is highlighted but the action still fails
Highlighting establishes that the selector identifies an element at the time you inspected it; it does not prove the element is actionable when the test clicks or types. Review the actionability logs, inspect whether the page changes between the pause and action, and step through from a point immediately before the failing operation.
The debugger stops but the run appears frozen
A pause is intentional until you resume or step. If the browser is hosted, also check that the session has not reached its inactivity timeout. Cloudflare documents defaults that differ for dashboard- and API-created sessions, and a configurable maximum; verify current settings for the particular session.
The failure occurs in CI but not on your machine
Use a trace or other recorded evidence from the failing run rather than relying only on a local reproduction. Compare the captured DOM, console output, network requests, action sequence, and source location. If you need to interact with the CI browser itself, determine whether the CI environment exposes a compatible hosted session view; a trace and a live remote browser solve different problems.

Check that the MCP setup has the devtools capability required by the documented Playwright MCP debugging features. Capability availability should be verified in the configuration actually running the agent, not inferred from the fact that it can perform ordinary browser actions.
