Use Linux Userspace I/O (UIO) when a device has mappable memory that userspace can control, does not fit an established Linux subsystem, and can safely rely on a small kernel driver for integration and essential interrupt handling. UIO is not a way to remove the kernel from device access: it divides responsibility between a kernel component and a userspace process.

When is UIO a good fit?

UIO is intended for devices whose registers or memory can be mapped into a process and whose control logic can largely run there. The Linux UIO HOWTO identifies typical candidates as devices that have mappable memory, can be controlled through that memory, and usually generate interrupts—but do not fit a standard kernel subsystem.

It is generally a poor fit when Linux already provides an appropriate subsystem and userspace interface. Networking, serial, and USB devices are examples of areas served by established subsystems. For many embedded sensors, for example, the kernel’s IIO framework provides a unified driver model and userspace interface.

  • Consider UIO: a specialized device has memory-mapped registers, custom control logic, and no suitable subsystem interface.
  • Prefer a subsystem: the device belongs to a class with an established kernel framework, such as networking or IIO sensors.
  • Do not assume UIO is universal: the HOWTO explicitly cautions, “Please note that UIO is not an universal driver interface.” That statement appears in Hans-Jürgen Koch’s HOWTO, dated 2006-12-11; it is not a kernel-release date.

What stays in the kernel, and what moves to userspace?

A UIO kernel component registers the device and exposes its memory mappings, identity, and interrupt events. It can be a small custom module or a generic driver suited to the hardware. The userspace program opens the device node, maps the exposed region, and implements much of the device-specific control logic.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The kernel must still perform any work that cannot safely wait for userspace. A process can exit or fail at any time; if hardware requires an action after every interrupt, that action belongs in the kernel interrupt handler. Some designs may also need kernel-side buffering to prevent data loss when userspace does not service events quickly enough. Keep interrupt-time work small, but do not defer essential hardware safety or acknowledgment steps to a process whose continued execution is not guaranteed.

How userspace discovers and maps a UIO device

UIO devices appear as nodes such as /dev/uio0, with associated attributes in sysfs. A process should identify the intended device and inspect its map metadata before accessing a region; the numeric uioX suffix alone should not be treated as a stable identity.

  1. Find the device: inspect available /dev/uioX nodes and the corresponding /sys/class/uio/uioX/ entries.
  2. Check identity and version: read the device’s name and version attributes under its sysfs directory and confirm they match the device and driver your program expects.
  3. Inspect the mapping: review entries such as /sys/class/uio/uioX/maps/map0/. Map attributes include name, addr, size, and offset. Use the reported size and offset rather than assuming a layout.
  4. Map the selected region: call mmap() on the UIO device file. Its file offset selects a map index multiplied by the system page size: map 0 uses offset 0, map 1 uses one page, and so on.
  5. Adjust for an unaligned region: if the map’s sysfs offset is nonzero, add that offset to the returned mapping pointer to reach the start of the device region.

The map-index rule and metadata are described in the UIO HOWTO. Validate the target kernel’s mapping details and the hardware’s memory layout before using mapped addresses.

How UIO interrupt notifications work

A blocking read() from /dev/uioX waits for an interrupt. The read must request the size of a signed 32-bit integer; the returned value is an interrupt count. Compare it with the previous count: an increase greater than one means one or more events may have arrived while userspace was not servicing the device. The HOWTO also describes using select() to wait for interrupt readiness.

Interrupt re-enabling is driver- and hardware-dependent. A UIO driver’s optional irqcontrol() callback can be invoked through a 32-bit write() to the device file, but the write interface is not available unless that driver implements the callback. Do not assume every UIO device can be re-enabled in the same way.

Choosing a UIO implementation route

UIO is a framework, not one generic driver. The appropriate route depends on the device bus, interrupt design, and memory requirements.

Route Suitable situation Key constraints and behavior
Custom UIO module A device needs tailored integration or callbacks not provided by a generic option. Registers a struct uio_info with identity and any required mappings, ports, IRQ information, or callbacks. Keep the interrupt handler small while performing necessary hardware actions.
uio_pdrv_genirq A platform device has a dedicated, unshared interrupt line. The generic handler disables the interrupt line. Userspace can re-enable it by writing 0x00000001 to the UIO device file. Do not set IRQF_SHARED for this route.
uio_dmem_genirq A platform device needs statically described regions and dynamically allocated memory, including documented use of regions available through the DMA-mapping API. Dynamic memory is allocated while the UIO device file is open and freed when it closes.
uio_pci_generic A supported PCI or PCI Express device does not have a better-fitting subsystem driver. The HOWTO describes support for PCI 2.3-compliant and PCI Express devices, not old PCI 2.2 devices. It does not bind automatically; manual loading and device assignment or binding are required. It relies on PCI interrupt-disable support, and userspace must clear the interrupt-disable bit before waiting for further interrupts.

These are documented options, not a guarantee for every kernel configuration, hardware revision, or device. Check the target kernel’s documentation and verify subsystem fit, memory layout, IRQ wiring, and binding requirements for the actual device. The kernel’s driver infrastructure documentation provides additional API context.
