Four open-source Android apps bring useful Linux workflows to a phone, but they are not four versions of the same thing. Termux gives you a local command-line environment; ConnectBot opens a terminal on a remote machine; Syncthing-Fork handles file synchronization; and KDE Connect links your phone with a computer. Choose by task, not by the word “Linux.”
Which Linux tool on Android fits your task?
| App | What it does | Where the work happens | What else you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Termux | Runs a package-managed command-line environment | On the Android device | Nothing required to get started; optional Bluetooth keyboard or external display |
| ConnectBot | Provides an SSH terminal connection | On the remote host you connect to | An SSH-accessible server or other remote machine |
| Syncthing-Fork | Brings Syncthing file synchronization to Android | Across paired devices | Syncthing-compatible devices and current app setup |
| KDE Connect | Shares files, links, clipboard, notifications, media controls, and input | Between Android and a paired computer | The desktop counterpart and a shared Wi-Fi network |
These apps do not all install a conventional Linux distribution. Only Termux is a local Linux-like command environment; ConnectBot is a client for a machine elsewhere, while the other two focus on syncing and device integration.
Termux: run Linux commands on Android
Termux is an Android terminal emulator and Linux environment. The Termux project describes it as working “directly with no rooting or setup required.” Android remains the underlying operating system; Termux provides a userland environment rather than replacing Android with a full desktop Linux OS.

Termux installs a minimal base environment, with additional software available through APT. It supports shells such as Bash, fish, and Zsh; editors including nano, Emacs, and Vim; and tools for development, scripting, remote access, and file transfer. The project lists languages and toolchains including Clang, Go, Rust, Python, Perl, Ruby, and Node.js. That makes it useful for learning shell commands, writing scripts, or carrying a command-line workspace with you.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
Termux also supports SSH through OpenSSH. If you want both local packages and remote access in one environment, you can install and use SSH there; if you mainly want a standalone SSH terminal app, ConnectBot is a more focused option.
Install from one consistent source
Check the official Termux installation instructions before downloading, because distribution availability and guidance can change. Do not mix Termux or its plugins from F-Droid, GitHub, or another distribution channel: their APK signing keys differ, so apps installed from inconsistent sources may not work together. The project README describes its Google Play build as an experimental branch with missing functionality compared with stable F-Droid or GitHub builds; verify the current status in the official instructions rather than assuming that description remains unchanged.

If you plan to type frequently, Termux documents support for Bluetooth keyboards and external displays. A keyboard is optional, not a requirement.
ConnectBot: use an SSH client for Android
ConnectBot is an open-source Secure Shell (SSH) client. It connects to a remote server over an encrypted connection and displays a terminal for that host. The commands run on the connected machine—not as a local Linux installation on your phone—so this is a fit for people who already have access to a Linux server or another SSH-enabled system.

The project’s README describes remote server access. Its F-Droid listing documents saved hosts, public-key authentication, port forwarding, and terminal customization. That listing identifies the F-Droid build as Apache License 2.0 and says it includes its cryptography provider without depending on Google Play Services.
Use ConnectBot when remote shell access is the main job. Choose Termux instead when you need packages and commands to run on the Android device itself; the two can also complement each other.

Syncthing-Fork: sync files between Android and other devices
Syncthing-Fork is an Android wrapper for Syncthing, the peer-to-peer file synchronization tool. Syncthing’s documentation describes the Android contribution as a wrapper app for the Syncthing binary. The fork’s project identifies its license as MPL-2.0. This app is for keeping files synchronized across devices, not for opening a shell or administering Linux.
The project says the previous official Android version is deprecated and points users to migration information. Before installing, check the project’s current releases and F-Droid information for the maintainer and update status. Syncthing-Fork should not be presented as an app maintained by the Syncthing core project.

KDE Connect: connect an Android phone to a Linux desktop
KDE Connect is a cross-device bridge, not a terminal. Its Android app can share files, URLs, and clipboard contents; send Android notifications to a desktop; control Linux media players; and let you use the phone as a touchpad and keyboard. The Android project says the devices communicate over an existing Wi-Fi network using TLS encryption.
Phone-to-computer features require KDE Connect’s desktop counterpart. The project’s download page lists Linux desktop and Android availability, links source code for both versions, and says Linux builds work across major distributions and desktop environments. Features can depend on the paired platform and setup, so KDE Connect is not limited to KDE Plasma.
Choose by the job you need done
- Run commands and install packages on the phone: start with Termux.
- Open a terminal on a remote Linux server: use ConnectBot, or SSH from Termux if you also need its broader local tool environment.
- Keep files synchronized across devices: look at Syncthing-Fork and check its current maintenance and installation details.
- Share files, notifications, clipboard, media controls, or input with a computer: set up KDE Connect on Android and the desktop.
The apps are complementary rather than interchangeable. A person might use Termux for local scripts, ConnectBot for server access, and KDE Connect for phone-to-desktop convenience; Syncthing-Fork addresses a separate file-sync need.
