For the published Linux Mint 22.3 upgrade, eligible source versions are Mint 22, 22.1, and 22.2. LMDE uses a separate terminal-based tool for the documented LMDE 6-to-7 upgrade. First confirm your edition and version, then follow the matching official route.
Choose the instructions for your edition and version
Linux Mint has two editions with different upgrade procedures. The menu path below applies to standard Linux Mint 22, 22.1, or 22.2 upgrading to 22.3 Zena. The terminal commands apply only to LMDE 6 upgrading to LMDE 7.

Upgrade standard Linux Mint 22, 22.1, or 22.2 to 22.3
The Linux Mint team published this route on January 13, 2026. Follow the steps in order and do not begin until you have made a system snapshot.

- Create a Timeshift snapshot. Open Timeshift from the applications menu, configure it if necessary, and create a snapshot. Mint recommends this so you can restore the operating system if the upgrade goes wrong.
- Update Cinnamon add-ons, if applicable. If you use Cinnamon applets, desklets, extensions, or themes, update them from System Settings before upgrading.
- Refresh Update Manager. Open Update Manager, click Refresh, and install any offered updates to
mintupdateormint-upgrade-info. - Launch the upgrade. In Update Manager, select Edit → Upgrade to Linux Mint 22.3 Zena, then follow the on-screen prompts. If asked whether to keep or replace configuration files, the 22.3 instructions say to replace them.
- Restart the computer. Reboot when the upgrade finishes.

If the 22.3 upgrade option is missing
The missing-offer checks below are specific to the 22.3 upgrade; the package-version threshold should not be treated as a standing requirement for later releases.

- Check that
mint-upgrade-infois version 1.3.0 or higher. - Close Update Manager, then restart it from the applications menu.
- If the required package version is not available from your configured mirror, switch to the default repositories and check again.
These checks come from the Mint team’s 22.3 upgrade guidance.
Upgrade LMDE 6 to LMDE 7
LMDE’s major-version upgrade uses the mintupgrade terminal tool, not the standard-edition Update Manager menu. Mint says the process can take several hours. Bring the system up to date and prepare a system snapshot before proceeding.

- Update package information and install the tool:
apt update apt install mintupgrade - Start the upgrade:
sudo mintupgradeFollow the prompts in the tool.
- After the upgrade succeeds, remove the tool and reboot:
apt remove mintupgrade sudo reboot
The guide says users with another rollback method can disable the snapshot requirement in the tool’s preferences. It also warns that temporary files may remain and refers to section 5.1.6 of Debian 13’s release notes for cleanup guidance. LMDE 7 is 64-bit only, so an LMDE 6 32-bit system cannot use this documented upgrade path.

For older standard Mint versions
The documented standard-edition route to Mint 22 was from Linux Mint 21.3. The July 2024 announcement directs systems older than 21.3 to the general upgrade guide rather than claiming they can jump directly to Mint 22. Check the instructions for your installed version instead of applying the 21.3-to-22 or 22.x-to-22.3 steps by assumption.

If you cannot sign in after the 22.3 upgrade
The 22.3 guide describes a rare login lockout and gives this console workaround. It is a release-specific remedy, not a general recovery guarantee.
- Press Ctrl+Alt+F2 to switch to a console and sign in.
- Run the command for your desktop environment:
killall cinnamon-screensaverFor MATE, use
killall mate-screensaverinstead. - Return to the graphical session with Ctrl+Alt+F7.
For Cinnamon Edition, the same 22.3 post also instructs users to reset the redesigned main-menu settings after upgrading and rebooting.
