On the Cinnamon edition of Linux Mint, the reported defaults are straightforward: press Print for the screen, Shift + Print to select a rectangular area, and Alt + Print for the active window. Add Ctrl to the corresponding shortcut when you want the capture copied to the clipboard. These are community-reported Cinnamon assignments, not guarantees for every Mint edition or customized installation, so verify them in your Keyboard Shortcuts settings.

How to draw the exact area you want
- Click the window or desktop you want visible in the result.
- Press Shift + Print.
- Press and hold the mouse button at one corner of the rectangle.
- Drag to the opposite corner. Adjust the rectangle before releasing if necessary.
- Release the button to complete the selection, then use the resulting capture according to the utility’s prompt (save it or copy it).
This is the closest built-in equivalent to a “snipping” workflow in the reported Cinnamon defaults. It selects a rectangle; it does not provide drawing, arrows or text annotation by itself.

Save the image or put it straight on the clipboard
When a file is the useful result
Use Print, Shift + Print, or Alt + Print without Ctrl. The screenshot utility will follow its normal save workflow. The exact destination and confirmation labels can vary with the Mint version and desktop configuration, so use the on-screen save prompt or your file manager rather than assuming a single folder.
When you need to paste immediately
Use the Ctrl-modified shortcut. After the capture, paste with Ctrl + V into an image editor, document, chat window or issue tracker that accepts images. Clipboard capture is useful when you do not want temporary files, but it also means the image can be replaced by your next clipboard operation.
Check or change the keyboard assignments
- Open Mint’s Keyboard Shortcuts settings.
- Find the screenshot or screen-capture category.
- Inspect the entries for the full screen, area and window actions.
- Click an entry to assign a new key combination, or clear a conflicting binding.
- Test each action after saving the change.
The wording and exact route can differ between Mint versions and desktop environments. Treat the settings panel as the authoritative list for your installation, rather than assuming that a Cinnamon community answer applies unchanged to MATE, Xfce, a different release, or a customized keyboard.
If you use MATE or Xfce
MATE
Open the MATE keyboard-shortcut settings and locate its screenshot commands. Assign or confirm full-screen, window and area actions there. Historical Mint MATE documentation describes a screenshot tool, but old documentation is not evidence that current defaults are identical.

Use Xfce’s keyboard-shortcut settings or its Screenshooter utility. The Mint Community catalog describes Xfce Screenshooter as supporting the desktop, a rectangular region, or a selected window. Confirm the available options in your installed release and display session.
Why edition matters
Linux Mint editions use different desktop environments, and users can replace or rebind utilities. The Cinnamon combinations above are reported defaults, not a cross-edition contract. If the key labels, session type or shortcut panel do not match, follow the controls exposed by your own desktop.
Need arrows, text or other annotations?
The built-in workflow is intentionally simple. For markup, the Linux Mint Community catalog lists Ksnip as an optional screenshot utility with custom rectangular areas, full-screen and window capture, delay and cursor options, plus annotation tools. Availability and compatibility depend on your Mint release and session, so verify the package and test it before making it part of a production workflow.

Choose the built-in tool when speed and no additional setup matter. Choose an optional utility when repeatable delays, cursor visibility or markup are more important than keeping the workflow minimal.

Screen recording is a different task
A screenshot is one still image; recording requires a video workflow and additional software. Cinnamon Spices lists a “ScreenShot+Record Desktop” applet, but it is optional rather than something to assume is bundled with Mint.
- The applet lists ffmpeg, xdotool and x11-utils as dependencies.
- User reports include recording problems on Linux Mint 22.3, so compatibility is version-sensitive.
- Check that the applet supports your current display session before relying on it for a presentation or incident recording.
If you only need a still frame, use the screenshot shortcuts instead of adding recording dependencies. If you need video, plan a short test recording that checks screen content, pointer behavior and audio before the real session.
Troubleshooting Linux Mint captures
Print does nothing
- Open Keyboard Shortcuts and check whether a screenshot action is assigned.
- Look for another application that has claimed the same key.
- Try the key labeled PrtSc or PrtScn, and test with the on-screen shortcut entry if your keyboard has an unusual layout.
- Confirm which Mint desktop is running; Cinnamon reports do not guarantee MATE or Xfce assignments.
The area-selection mode never appears
- Use the full combination: Shift + Print.
- Check that Shift is functioning in another application.
- Inspect the area-capture binding in Keyboard Shortcuts; it may have been removed or reassigned.
The capture is saved but you cannot find it
Repeat the action and watch for the save dialog or notification. The destination can vary by utility and configuration, so search for the newly created image by its modification time rather than assuming a universal path.
The clipboard paste is blank or contains an older image
- Use the Ctrl-modified shortcut, not the save-to-file version.
- Paste immediately into a known image-capable application.
- If another program runs a clipboard manager, check that manager’s history and permissions.
A window capture includes the wrong window
Bring the intended window to the foreground before pressing Alt + Print. If the result still differs, test the desktop’s window-capture command in Keyboard Shortcuts; window-manager behavior can vary by session.

Recording fails
Check the ffmpeg, xdotool and x11-utils requirements listed by the Cinnamon applet, then verify that your Mint release and display session are supported. The reported Mint 22.3 problems mean that installing the applet alone is not a reliability guarantee.
