Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo log out of the Linux shell you are currently using, type exit. If you entered a nested shell with su, this returns you to the previous shell; it does not end every session belonging to that user. For a systemd-logind session, use loginctl terminate-session ID to end one session, or loginctl terminate-user USER to end all sessions for a user. Those last two commands can kill processes and discard unsaved work.
Choose a command based on what you want to leave
“Log out” can mean closing the shell in your terminal, ending one login session, or stopping every session for a user. These commands have different scopes:
| Goal | Command or action | Scope and effect |
|---|---|---|
| Leave the current interactive shell | exit |
Ends only the current shell. In a nested su shell, returns to the parent shell. |
| End one systemd-logind session | loginctl terminate-session ID |
Terminates that session, kills its processes, and releases its associated resources. |
| End all sessions for one user | loginctl terminate-user USER |
Terminates all sessions for that user, killing processes across them and releasing associated resources. |
| Inspect sessions or users | loginctl list-sessionsloginctl list-usersloginctl session-status IDloginctl user-status USER |
Lists sessions or users, or displays status for a selected session or user. Availability and details can vary with the installed systemd version. |
loginctl manages sessions through systemd-logind; it is not a universal session-control tool for every Linux distribution, container, or system without systemd-logind. See the loginctl(1) manual for the commands supported by your system.
Log out of the current shell
At the shell prompt, type:
exit
The command ends the shell process you are using. In a terminal emulator, that may close the terminal window or tab if no other shell remains there. In an SSH connection, it normally ends the remote shell and closes the connection when that shell is the session’s remaining process. A shell may also support a logout command, but exit is the straightforward choice across common interactive-shell situations.

Return from a nested su shell
Running su without a command starts an interactive shell as the selected user. Type exit in that shell to return to the shell from which you ran su. This exits the nested shell; it does not terminate other sessions for that user. The su(1) manual describes su as a way to run commands with a substitute user and group ID.
End one systemd-managed session
If you need to terminate a session rather than just close your own shell, first identify the session, then pass its ID to loginctl:

- Run
loginctl list-sessionsto inspect the sessions. - Use
loginctl session-status IDto check the session you intend to end. - Run
loginctl terminate-session ID, replacingIDwith the target session’s actual ID.
Termination kills processes associated with that session and deallocates its resources. Check the target carefully: applications or jobs running in that session may be stopped, and unsaved work may be lost.

loginctl terminate-user USER
Replace USER with the account name. This is broader than logging out of one shell: it terminates all of that user’s systemd-logind sessions and kills processes across them. Use it only when you intend to affect every session for that account. The loginctl(1) documentation describes this operation as terminating all sessions of a user.
Why some processes may continue after logout
A logout does not always mean every process associated with a user has stopped. Systemd-logind supports lingering; when it is enabled, the user manager can remain active after logout so long-running services can continue. The loginctl manual documents this behavior. Whether lingering is enabled is separate from simply closing a shell with exit.
